If you buy and play almost all your games as downloads, the PS5 Digital Edition can be the better fit—provided its capacity suits your library and it costs meaningfully less where you live. Both models support digital games. The disc PS5 adds access to supported physical PS5 and PS4 games, so it is the more flexible choice if you own, borrow, collect, or expect to buy discs. For download-heavy libraries, storage expansion—not the disc drive—is the more direct way to keep more PS5 games installed and ready to play.
What changes between PS5 Digital and Disc?
Sony’s US buying page lists the PS5 console with a disc drive as supporting Blu-ray PS5 and PS4 games as well as PlayStation Store downloads. It describes the Digital Edition as all-digital. Both models can download games; choosing the disc model does not make digitally purchased games play from a disc. Sony’s current US PS5 buying page lists the disc console at 1 TB and the Digital Edition at 825 GB. Those are listed capacities for the models on that page, not usable-free-space figures or a universal comparison across every revision and region.

Does the disc version download games faster?
A disc drive does not provide a speed advantage for games you buy digitally. Both versions download digital games through the PlayStation Store; download time depends on factors such as your internet connection and the particular download. The sources cited here do not establish that every disc release avoids downloads, patches, or installation, so a physical copy should not be treated as a guarantee of offline play or zero downloads.

Is PS5 Digital enough storage for large games?
That depends on the exact console capacity and how many games you want installed at once. Sony’s US buying page lists 825 GB for the Digital Edition and 1 TB for the disc PS5. These are published capacities, not the amount of free space available to games after system software and other data. Release-specific install sizes are not established here, so there is no reliable universal number of games either model can hold.
If you want more PS5 games installed and ready to launch, an internal M.2 NVMe SSD is the most direct expansion route. Sony’s US guidance says games can be downloaded, updated, and played from M.2 storage. Its current requirements are:
- PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD, Key M, with capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB.
- Supported form factors: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110.
- Sony recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s.
- An effective heat-dissipation mechanism is required; verify the drive and heatsink dimensions fit the console’s slot and cover.
Sony cautions that meeting the listed speed alone does not guarantee compatibility or identical performance in every game. Check the current requirements and the drive manufacturer’s specifications before purchase in Sony’s M.2 SSD installation guidance.

When an external USB drive makes sense
A USB extended-storage drive can help archive PS5 games and can store and play PS4 games directly. PS5 games on USB must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or an installed M.2 SSD before you can play them. That makes USB useful when you want to keep games without using internal capacity, but less convenient for a large rotation of titles you expect to launch immediately. Choose the disc model if physical games are part of how you play: an existing PS4 or PS5 disc collection, borrowed games, or a preference for buying physical releases. Sony says supported PS4 disc games need a PS5 with a disc drive; a game may need an update, and its disc must remain inserted while you play. PS4 discs cannot be used on the Digital Edition. The drive also supports video discs. Its value depends on whether you will actually use physical games or media; for a player who only downloads games, that flexibility may not justify a higher price.

Can you add a disc drive to PS5 Digital?
Sony sells a detachable drive for specified slim Digital Edition model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100, as well as PS5 Pro. Setup requires an internet connection to pair the drive. This is not a universal upgrade for every Digital Edition, so check the console’s model number and the accessory’s current compatibility and availability before buying. - Check your exact console options. Confirm the model revision, listed storage capacity, and whether a disc drive is built in or available as an add-on in your region.
- Decide whether physical games matter. Count discs you already own and consider whether borrowing or buying physical copies is part of your plans.
- Compare current local prices. Prices, bundles, and sales change; no current street-price comparison is established here. If Digital is meaningfully cheaper and you do not need discs, it can be the sensible download-only choice. If the gap is small, the disc model buys flexibility while still supporting downloads.
- Plan storage separately. If you need more PS5 games installed and playable, assess a compatible M.2 SSD and its upfront cost. If you are comfortable copying PS5 games back from USB storage before play, USB can serve as an archive instead.
Storage and disc access solve different problems: a disc drive adds physical-game options, while M.2 expansion increases space for games that can remain installed and launch from that storage.
