Console Sharing and Offline Play gives other users of one designated PS5 access to the account holder’s eligible purchased and downloaded games and media, even when that console is offline. Share Play is a remote streaming session: a friend can watch or play your game without owning it, but the session has a one-hour limit and PlayStation Plus requirements.

What is the difference between PS5 Console Sharing and “game sharing”?
Sony’s official names are Console Sharing and Offline Play and Share Play. “Game sharing” is an informal phrase that is often used for either one, which causes confusion because they solve different problems.
| Reader goal | Feature | How it works | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Let other people using one PS5 play your eligible purchases and downloads | Console Sharing and Offline Play | Enables access to the account holder’s purchased and downloaded games and media on one designated PS5, including while it is offline | Only one PS5 can be enabled for the account at a time; only selected subscription benefits are shared |
| Let a remote friend watch or join your current game | Share Play | Streams the host’s play session to one online visitor, who does not need to own the game | PlayStation Plus is required; sessions end after one hour; network, account, game, age and region restrictions apply |
Console Sharing changes access on a particular console. Share Play does not transfer or unlock your library for the visitor; it streams a live session from the host’s PS5.

What Console Sharing and Offline Play actually enables
Access for every user on one PS5
When Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled, anyone using that PS5 can play the account holder’s purchased and downloaded games and use eligible purchased media. The access applies to other users on that specific console rather than to every console where the account is signed in.
Offline use
The “Offline Play” part is significant: users of the enabled PS5 can play eligible purchased and downloaded games while the console is offline. The account holder does not need to remain online for each play session.

Sony allows only one PS5 at a time to have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled for an account. This is a console-level setting, and Sony says it does not change other console-activation limits.
Selected PlayStation Plus benefits
Other users of the enabled PS5 can receive some benefits from the account holder’s PlayStation Plus membership. Sharing is selective, not universal. Sony identifies benefits such as online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play among PlayStation Plus features, but access for other users depends on which benefit is shareable, whether the membership remains active and whether a catalogued game or benefit is still available.

Do not interpret Console Sharing as a way to copy a subscription to every account or every console. It grants eligible access on the one PS5 where the setting is enabled.
How to enable Console Sharing on a PS5
The setting is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in to PlayStation. If you are configuring a different PS5, use the account that owns the purchases or subscription and follow this path:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Open Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select Enable.
If the account already has Console Sharing enabled on another PS5, disable it there before enabling it on the new console. After the setting is enabled, other users of the new designated PS5 can access eligible purchased and downloaded content, including offline.
How to turn it off
Use the same path—Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play—and select Disable. Disabling the setting removes that PS5’s entitlement to the account holder’s shared access; it does not delete the account holder’s purchases.
If you no longer have the old PS5
When the previous console is inaccessible, sign in to Account Management and deactivate all devices remotely. Sony limits this remote all-device deactivation action to once every six months. Because it affects all activated devices, use it as a recovery step when you cannot reach the old console, then enable Console Sharing on the PS5 you currently use.

What Console Sharing does not do
- It does not enable the setting on multiple PS5 consoles simultaneously.
- It does not make every PlayStation Plus benefit available to every other user.
- It does not turn a remote friend’s PS5 into a copy of your library.
- It does not remove subscription, catalog, account or content eligibility requirements.
If a game or benefit is unavailable to another user, Sony recommends checking that the enabling account purchased the content, that the relevant subscription is active and that the other person sharing the console actually enabled the feature.

A streamed session with one visitor
Share Play lets the host invite one online visitor into the host’s current game session. The visitor does not need to own the game because the gameplay is streamed remotely from the host’s PS5. This is temporary participation, not a permanent license or a shared local installation.
Starting Share Play
- Open a party voice chat on the PS5.
- Open the party voice chat card.
- Choose Share Play.
- Invite the friend you want to join.
- Select the Share Play mode that matches what you want the visitor to do.
Share Play begins when the visitor joins. Only one visitor can be connected at a time, and Sony says the session automatically ends one hour after the visitor joins.
Connection requirement
Sony recommends at least 2 Mbps upstream and 2 Mbps downstream for both the host and visitor for the best Share Play experience. That is a support recommendation, not a guarantee of image quality or input responsiveness. Wireless congestion, distance, household traffic and the game itself can still affect the session.
Share Play modes and PlayStation Plus requirements
Visitor plays as you
In this mode, the host hands control of the host’s game to the visitor. The host needs an active PlayStation Plus membership. The visitor does not need to own the game, but the session remains tied to the host’s running game and ends after the one-hour limit.

Play with the visitor
This mode lets the host and visitor play together where the game supports the arrangement. Both the host and visitor need PlayStation Plus. The visitor still does not need to own the game, because the session is streamed from the host.
Watching only
A visitor can watch the host’s session without taking control. Share Play still remains an online streaming session with the same general account, game, network, age and regional restrictions.
Sony’s PlayStation Plus support information lists Share Play among the plan benefits. That requirement belongs to Share Play; it is separate from the Console Sharing and Offline Play switch.
Share Play restrictions you should expect
- One visitor: only one visitor can join a PS5 Share Play session at a time.
- One-hour session: Share Play automatically ends one hour after the visitor joins; you can start another session if the game and accounts still qualify.
- Host-only trophies: only the host can earn trophies during Share Play.
- No Remote Play or Broadcast: those functions are unavailable during PS5 Share Play.
- No visitor captures: the visitor cannot save screenshots or video clips from the Share Play session.
- Age and parental controls: age-rating and parental-control settings can prevent or limit participation.
- Country and region: availability can vary by country or region for the accounts, game or feature.
- Game and scene restrictions: a particular game or scene can block or limit Share Play.
These restrictions are why Share Play should be treated as a controlled, temporary session rather than a replacement for owning or installing a game.
PlayStation Plus: what can and cannot be shared
PlayStation Plus belongs to the subscriber’s account. Sony allows selected subscription benefits to be shared on a primary PS4 and on one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled. The wording “selected” matters: there is no blanket transfer of every benefit to every user.
Best Value
Examples Sony lists among PlayStation Plus benefits include online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play. Whether another user can use a particular benefit depends on the benefit’s sharing rules, the subscriber’s active membership and current availability. A game supplied through a catalog can also become unavailable if the membership ends or the title leaves the catalog.
For Share Play, PlayStation Plus is a direct requirement: the host needs it to let a visitor play as the host, and both participants need it for the play-together mode. For Console Sharing, the setting itself is what grants other users of the designated PS5 access to eligible purchased and downloaded content and selected subscription benefits.
Which feature should you use?
| Your situation | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Several people use the same physical PS5 and need access to one account’s purchased downloads | Console Sharing and Offline Play | Other users of that enabled PS5 can play eligible purchases, including offline |
| You want a remote friend to try a game without buying it | Share Play | The friend joins a streamed session and does not need to own the game |
| You want to hand a remote friend control of your game | Share Play: Visitor plays as you | The visitor controls the host’s session; the host needs PlayStation Plus |
| You want to play cooperatively with a remote friend | Share Play: Play with the visitor | Both participants need PlayStation Plus, and the game must support the mode |
| You need access while the designated PS5 has no internet connection | Console Sharing and Offline Play | Eligible purchased and downloaded content can be played offline on that PS5 |
| You need a permanent entitlement on the friend’s own PS5 | Neither feature | Console Sharing is tied to one designated PS5, while Share Play is a temporary stream |
Troubleshooting common problems
Another user cannot start a purchased game
- Confirm that the account enabling Console Sharing is the account that purchased the game or downloaded it while entitled to it.
- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and verify that the setting shows as enabled on this PS5.
- Check that the console is the one designated for that account; only one PS5 can be enabled at a time.
- If the game came from a subscription, verify that the relevant membership is active and that the title remains available.
The old PS5 cannot be disabled
Use Account Management to deactivate all devices remotely. Sony permits that remote all-device deactivation only once every six months. After deactivation, enable Console Sharing on the PS5 you can access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShare Play will not start
- Check PlayStation Plus status for the host and, when using play-together mode, for the visitor.
- Confirm that both users meet the game’s age, parental-control, account and region requirements.
- Check the connection in both directions; Sony recommends at least 2 Mbps upstream and downstream for each participant.
- Make sure another visitor is not already connected.
- Check whether the game or current scene blocks Share Play.
The visitor cannot save a clip or earn a trophy
This is expected behavior rather than a fault: only the host can earn trophies, and the visitor cannot save screenshots or video clips during PS5 Share Play.
A practical decision checklist
- Are the people using the same designated PS5? If yes, start with Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Does the other person need access to your purchased downloads while offline? Console Sharing is the relevant feature.
- Is the other person joining from another location for a short session? Use Share Play.
- Does the visitor need to control your game? Choose Visitor plays as you; the host needs PlayStation Plus.
- Do you both need to play together? Choose Play with the visitor; both need PlayStation Plus.
- Are you expecting a permanent library transfer? Neither feature provides that. Console Sharing is limited to one enabled PS5, and Share Play is a timed stream.
Bottom line: local library access versus remote play
Console Sharing and Offline Play is the PS5 feature for sharing eligible purchased and downloaded games and media with other users of one designated console, including offline use. Share Play is the feature for inviting one remote friend into a live session without requiring that friend to own the game. Its modes have different PlayStation Plus rules, and its sessions are limited to one hour with additional network, age, region, account, game and capture restrictions.
