Recent reports describe PlayStation Network account takeovers allegedly carried out by persuading PlayStation Support to transfer account control—not a confirmed breach of Sony’s network. PlayStation podcaster and journalist Colin Moriarty was identified as a recent high-profile target, following an earlier reported case involving French journalist Nicolas Lellouche. The reports do not establish how many accounts may be affected or show that every PS5 account is at risk.
What the reports say happened
PlayStation LifeStyle reported on May 19, 2026, that Moriarty said his PSN account had been taken over. The outlet quoted his public statement: “My PSN account was hacked, seemingly as part of an ongoing sophisticated series of moves against both random and "prominent" users.” The same report cited the earlier case of French journalist Nicolas Lellouche, whose visible PlayStation Store transaction ID was reportedly used in an account takeover. PlayStation LifeStyle’s May 19 report attributes the cases to reporting and the individuals’ accounts.

Push Square’s May 23 account described the alleged route as social engineering: someone posing as an account owner and persuading customer support to transfer control. It said limited information—such as a username, associated email address, transaction ID or purchase date—might help convince support. The article drew on reported cases, Moriarty’s account and a test conducted with permission; it was not an independent forensic audit of Sony’s systems. Push Square’s account of the allegations therefore should not be read as proof that the method works in every case.
This distinction matters: the coverage alleges a weakness in support-assisted account recovery, not an intrusion into Sony’s network or theft of a user database. The sources do not give a verified count or rate of affected accounts. “Getting worse” is PlayStation LifeStyle’s characterization, not a published incident statistic.

Can an account be taken over with 2FA or a passkey?
Two-factor authentication and passkeys strengthen sign-in, but they cannot be treated as a guarantee against every route to account loss. The reports allege that some attackers sought to bypass normal sign-in protections by convincing support to recover or transfer an account. Sony’s own guidance recommends stronger sign-in practices but does not promise that they prevent support-mediated recovery abuse.
Use a unique password for each service, protect the email account linked to PSN with a strong, unique password, and consider a password manager or passkey. These measures help reduce risks from reused passwords, stolen credentials and scams that trick people into disclosing sign-in details. They are worthwhile protections, not a proven workaround for the alleged support weakness. PlayStation’s security best-practice guidance explains its recommended precautions.

What to do if you suspect your PlayStation account was compromised
If you receive an account-change email you did not request
- Secure the linked email first. Change its password if the account-change message was not initiated by you.
- Try PlayStation account recovery. Follow the recovery steps on PlayStation’s compromised-account page.
- Contact PlayStation Support if you cannot change the sign-in method or regain access.
If your console was stolen
Sign out of PlayStation on all devices, deactivate the consoles and consider removing payment methods to reduce the risk of unwanted purchases. Contact support if you cannot access the account or change its sign-in details.
If you see an unfamiliar charge
Check the account transaction history before treating a charge as fraud. PlayStation advises checking whether it relates to a recurring subscription, spending from a family wallet, a duplicate purchase or another account that shares the payment method. Contact support if the charge remains unexplained.

How to reduce common account risks
- Use different passwords for PSN, your email and every other service; a password manager can help you keep them distinct.
- Be cautious with unexpected messages from players or social-media accounts, and avoid scanning QR codes from untrusted sources.
- Keep account details private and avoid signing in on shared devices.
- Contact PlayStation Support promptly about suspicious activity.
These steps address credential reuse, phishing and other common ways attackers obtain sign-in details. They do not guarantee protection if someone can persuade support to change account ownership; the reporting does not establish a user-side setting that reliably blocks that alleged route.

Push Square reported on June 8, 2026, that Sony had two Senior Fraud Strategist job listings, one in San Mateo and one in London. The outlet said their timing might relate to recent fraud reporting, while also noting the roles may have been planned earlier. The listings do not confirm the allegations or establish that Sony changed its account-recovery process. Push Square’s report on the listings is a staffing development, not evidence of a specific security fix.
