A PS3 can connect to a phone hotspot only when the hotspot’s wireless mode and security settings are compatible with the console, and the phone has working mobile data. Start by checking whether the PS3 can see the hotspot, then use its Internet connection test to identify whether the problem is visibility, authentication, Internet access, or a game-specific feature.
Connect the PS3 to a mobile hotspot
Have the hotspot’s network name (SSID) and security key ready. Sony’s documented wireless setup is:

- On the PS3, open Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings.
- Choose Wireless, then select Scan.
- Select your hotspot’s SSID from the list and enter its security key carefully.
- Save the settings and run the PS3’s Internet connection test.
Sony’s manual notes that network settings depend on the access point and network environment. It identifies SSID and a WEP or WPA key as access-point information used during setup; the later-model manual documents WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK choices. Use a security mode supported by both devices, and do not make the hotspot open or weaken its security just to test the connection. [Sony PS3-01-1.6 User Manual; Sony CECH-2501A User Manual]
Diagnose the failure by what happens
The hotspot does not appear in the scan
- Confirm the phone’s hotspot is on and set to be visible, move the PS3 closer to the phone, and scan again.
- If the network still does not appear, check the phone maker’s instructions for its available wireless bands and modes. Options vary by phone, so there is no single menu path or legacy-mode setting that applies to every handset.
- Compatibility is important: PlayStation Support says network equipment should support 802.11b or 802.11g wireless protocols. A hotspot that does not offer a compatible mode may not work with the PS3.
- If needed, Sony’s manual also allows manual SSID entry, but entering the name will not overcome incompatible wireless settings.

The hotspot appears, but the PS3 will not connect
- Select the SSID again and carefully re-enter the security key. A single incorrect character can prevent authentication.
- Confirm the phone’s hotspot security mode is one the PS3 supports. The cited PS3 manuals document older security options, including WEP and WPA-family choices; they do not establish support for WPA3.
- Save the settings and run the Internet connection test. Note which stage fails rather than treating every connection error as a password problem.
Other devices also cannot get online through the hotspot
Try another wireless device on the same hotspot. If it also lacks Internet access, check that the phone itself has mobile data connectivity and that the hotspot is enabled. The problem may be the phone’s data connection or service rather than a PS3 setting; contact the carrier if the phone cannot provide working data service. Sony’s troubleshooting likewise recommends testing another wireless device and contacting the internet provider if other devices have connectivity problems.
Other devices work, but the PS3 fails
Once the phone hotspot is shown to provide Internet access to another device, focus on PS3-specific compatibility and configuration:

- Recheck the hotspot key and wireless mode against the PS3 requirements above.
- Temporarily disable the PS3 Media Server connection: Settings > Network Settings > Media Server Connection > Disable.
- If you configured a proxy on the PS3, turn it off for the test. Sony’s CECH-2501A manual lists Do Not Use as the typical proxy choice in its connection setup guidance; menus may differ by model or firmware.
- Check that the network equipment’s firmware or drivers are functioning and current, using the equipment maker’s instructions.
These are troubleshooting steps listed by PlayStation Support for error 80710016; the proxy and menu guidance is also documented in the CECH-2501A manual.
The Internet test passes, but a game or chat does not work
A successful PS3 Internet connection test confirms basic connectivity; it does not guarantee every game’s multiplayer, voice chat, or video chat will work. Sony’s CECH-2501A manual says UPnP is typically enabled and warns that disabling it may restrict online communication features in games and voice/video chat. If the setting is available, check that UPnP has not been disabled: the manual’s custom setup describes Enable as the typical choice. Model and firmware menus can differ.

Even with UPnP enabled, a mobile connection is not guaranteed to support every game feature. The cited Sony guidance does not establish a universal carrier-side fix or promise that a particular hotspot configuration will enable multiplayer or chat. See the Sony CECH-2501A User Manual.

Sony notes that wireless interference can reduce data-transfer speed or affect wireless controller operation. Its manual recommends using an Ethernet cable when those problems occur. This is an option only if you can connect the PS3 to a compatible router or wired network; an Ethernet cable does not connect the console directly to a phone hotspot.
