Before buying a PS2 modchip or a part advertised as a “replacement security chip,” identify the console’s SCPH model and motherboard revision—and work out which component or function you actually need. PS2 chips and installation diagrams are revision-specific; a generic “fits PS2” claim is not enough. If your goal is simply to launch homebrew, a compatible FreeMCBoot memory card or FreeDVDBoot may avoid permanent soldering work.
First identify what “security chip” means in the listing
“Security chip” is not a precise PS2 part name. It might mean a modchip, a component involved in disc authentication, a memory-card MagicGate component, or another board-level part. Those are different purchase and repair questions: a modchip is an intentional console modification, while a replacement component should correspond to a diagnosed fault and an identifiable part.

For a replacement, gather the SCPH model, motherboard revision, markings on the existing component, and the symptom or repair diagnosis. The term alone does not identify a safe replacement. ConsoleMods’ Mechapwn documentation also illustrates that PS2 security and region behavior can depend on the console model; it is not a parts-identification guide.
Choose the route that matches your goal
| Option | What it is for | What to check | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS2 modchip | Hardware modification for functions supported by that particular chip | Console model and board revision; exact chip revision; compatible wiring diagram and firmware | Requires permanent soldering work and careful revision matching. See PCSX2’s method comparison and the revision-specific Crystal Chip diagrams. |
| FreeMCBoot memory card | Launching homebrew from a memory card | Target console compatibility and how the card implements per-card signatures | Avoids a permanent console modification, but third-party card behavior can vary. See ConsoleMods’ FreeMCBoot guide. |
| FreeDVDBoot | Launching homebrew through a supported DVD exploit | Console and DVD-player compatibility, plus disc preparation | No chip installation, but it works only on supported configurations. See ConsoleMods’ PS2 getting-started guide. |
| Replacement security-related component | Repairing a particular console fault | Existing part markings, board revision, diagnosis, and documented replacement | Cannot be selected responsibly from the phrase “security chip” alone. |
PCSX2 recommends FreeMCBoot or FreeDVDBoot for many BIOS-dumping use cases and notes that these methods do not permanently alter the console. ConsoleMods describes FreeMCBoot as a memory-card route for launching homebrew. Neither method is a universal substitute: compatibility depends on the console and, for FreeDVDBoot, DVD-player configuration.

Match a modchip to the exact console revision
- Read the SCPH model. Find the model number on the console label. Do not infer it from the case appearance or a seller’s generic compatibility list.
- Establish the motherboard revision. Use reliable revision documentation for the exact console. A model number is an important starting point, but installation compatibility also depends on the board.
- Confirm the chip and diagram together. Ask for the exact chip model and revision, supported console and board revisions, firmware details, and the installation documentation. Check that the wiring diagram names the revision you have.
- Check the seller’s evidence and return terms. Treat compatibility statements as seller claims unless they match revision-specific documentation. A clear return policy matters if the supplied item or its claimed revision does not match.
Crystal Chip installation documentation is divided by board revision, demonstrating why a broad “PS2 compatible” label is insufficient. The PS2-CHIPS version-identification guide is historical seller material: it can illustrate the need to identify a console version first, but it does not independently verify a listing, chip authenticity, or current compatibility.
Account for the installation risk
PCSX2 categorizes modchip use as expert-level and high-risk, and lists the chip, documentation, wires, tools, and soldering iron among the materials needed. Soldering equipment alone does not establish the skill to install a chip safely. If you are not already competent with fine electronics soldering, include the cost and availability of a qualified installer in your decision, or choose a software-based route instead.

- Fit for PS2 controller
- Package include: 1 x Conductive Film,1 x 19Pin Connector Port
- Please carefully check the picture, type, applicable model and color of the product before purchase to see if it is what you need. Enjoy your shopping.
- SA1Q has no difference between 18PIN and 19PIN, they are all universal. But the Connector on the controller has 18 and 19 Pin
Check preloaded FreeMCBoot cards carefully
A preloaded card is a convenience, not proof of quality or universal compatibility. ConsoleMods warns that some third-party memory cards do not accurately support per-card signatures required by some official software. Before buying, verify the target console and ask what card implementation is being supplied; do not assume every card works identically just because it includes FreeMCBoot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a diagnosis, not a search phrase, for replacement parts
- Record the SCPH model and motherboard revision.
- Photograph or transcribe the markings on the existing component.
- Identify the specific fault and the documented component associated with it.
- Ask the seller to confirm the exact part number or marking and board-revision fit.
- Do not substitute a modchip for a failed security-related component, or a replacement component for a desired modchip function, based only on similar listing language.
The available documentation does not establish current chip stock, authenticity, seller reputation, or the quality of any particular listing. A legacy product page or old installation guide is not evidence that a present-day item is genuine, correctly described, or in stock.
