An existing desktop can become a Proxmox home server if its processor supports virtualization, it has enough memory for both the host and its guests, and you can install without erasing data you need. The change is not just installing software: Proxmox VE takes over the machine as a host for virtual machines and Linux containers, so check the hardware, disks, and network plan first.
What changes when a desktop becomes a Proxmox server?
Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE) is a platform for running KVM virtual machines and LXC containers on one physical host, managed through a web interface. It can consolidate services, but which services to run depends on the machine and your needs; no particular workload or result can be assumed for an unspecified desktop. Proxmox’s feature overview describes its virtualization, storage, and backup capabilities.

Unlike a desktop operating system used interactively, a Proxmox host is infrastructure for guest systems. A failure or maintenance task on the host can affect multiple guests, so plan for backups and recovery before relying on it for important services.

Processor and virtualization support
Proxmox VE’s recommended hardware requirements list Intel 64 or AMD64 processors with Intel VT or AMD-V. Check the processor and motherboard firmware settings; virtualization support may need to be enabled in firmware. Proxmox’s FAQ identifies Intel VT-x, shown as vmx, and AMD-V, shown as svm, as the relevant CPU features. PCIe passthrough has additional requirements: the requirements page names Intel VT-d or AMD-Vi.

Memory for the host and guests
Proxmox’s requirements page specifies 2 GB minimum for the host operating system and Proxmox VE services in its recommended hardware section, with additional memory needed for guests. It separately lists 1 GB RAM as a minimum for evaluation and testing; that testing figure does not establish that a machine with 1 GB is suitable for a useful home server. Estimate memory for the host plus the virtual machines and containers you intend to run, rather than treating all installed RAM as guest memory.
The same requirements page says to allow approximately 1 GB of additional memory per TB of storage used for Ceph or ZFS. That allowance applies to those storage configurations, not as a universal memory rule for every Proxmox installation. Check the current Proxmox VE requirements against your chosen setup.

Disks, network, and other hardware
Inventory the disks and identify where any existing files live. Note the network interface and confirm that the machine can connect to the network you will use to manage it. Hardware suitability depends on the actual parts and workload; without the desktop’s CPU, motherboard, RAM, disks, and NIC, no particular build can be declared compatible or adequate.

Choose virtual machines or containers for each workload
| Option | What it runs | When the distinction matters |
|---|---|---|
| KVM virtual machine | A guest operating system running as a virtual machine. | Use a VM when you need a separate guest OS environment; it offers more guest-OS flexibility than an LXC container. |
| LXC container | A Linux guest that shares the host kernel. | Containers can have lower overhead, but they are Linux-only guests and do not provide the same kernel separation as a VM. |
They are not interchangeable for every workload. Proxmox’s features page describes both technologies. Its FAQ says running Docker directly on the Proxmox host is not recommended; if Docker is part of your plan, distinguish that official guidance from your own deployment choice and consider how you will isolate and maintain it.

Choose storage with the workload and data at risk in mind
Proxmox supports local and network storage. Local storage keeps the arrangement centered on disks in the host; network storage adds dependence on separate storage infrastructure and the network. The suitable choice depends on your workload and hardware. Proxmox recommends fast, redundant storage and says SSDs give the best results, but this is general platform guidance, not evidence about the performance of a particular desktop or disk. See the requirements and features pages.
Do not treat redundancy as a backup: a redundant arrangement can help with some disk failures, while a backup is a separate copy intended to support recovery. Proxmox supports full guest backups; decide where those backups will live and how you would restore them before placing important data on the host.

Filesystem and controller choices matter. The Proxmox installation documentation explicitly warns that ZFS on hardware RAID is unsupported and can result in data loss. Do not select ZFS by default without checking the storage controller and installation guidance for the actual machine. The installation guide covers storage considerations.

The standard installation route is the official Proxmox VE ISO, copied to USB flash media or CD/DVD. Proxmox describes this as a bare-metal installation: the complete server is used, and data on selected disks will be removed. Identify the target disk carefully and preserve anything you need before starting. Do not assume an existing data disk will be kept simply because it is not the disk you intended to install to.
Best Value
- Connectivity: Includes WiFi, Bluetooth, and LAN for wireless and wired connections
- Memory: Features 16GB DDR4 RAM for smooth multitasking and performance
- Storage: Combines 500GB SSD and 1TB HDD for ample storage space
- Graphics: Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 for crisp visuals and video playback

- Review the current requirements and installation guide. Confirm the hardware and storage arrangement are supported for your intended use.
- Prepare the installer media. Follow Proxmox’s getting-started instructions to obtain the ISO and copy it to a USB flash drive or CD/DVD.
- Back up needed files and identify disks. Verify which disk contains the data you need and which disk is the installation target; the installer removes data on selected disks.
- Boot the installer and review its choices. Configure the installation and network details, checking the selected target disk before proceeding.
- Open the management interface. After installation, use a browser to visit the host’s resulting IP address on port
8006. The actual address depends on the network configuration; Proxmox documents this access pattern in its installation guide.
Installing Proxmox on top of Debian is an alternative documented path, but it is a more advanced approach involving manual storage and network configuration. For a first conversion, the ISO is the standard workflow described by Proxmox’s installation page.
Quick Recap
Plan how you will operate and recover the server
- Management access: Know which host IP and network path you will use to reach the web interface. Do not expose management access beyond the networks you intend to trust.
- Guest backups: Configure full guest backups and choose a destination separate from the data they protect where feasible. Confirm that you can recover what matters.
- Maintenance: Updates, reboots, and host failures can affect all guests on the machine. Plan maintenance around the services you actually depend on.
- Power, noise, and reliability: These are specific to the desktop and its operating conditions. No power-draw, acoustic, uptime, or performance measurement is established for the unspecified machine, so measure your own system before assuming it will be cheaper or quieter than a replacement server.
