Proton is Valve’s Steam-focused tool for running Windows games, built on Wine and additional gaming components. They are related, not equal alternatives: Wine is the underlying technology, while Proton packages it with Steam integration, game-oriented defaults and a managed per-game environment.
If the game is in your Steam library, start with the Proton version supplied by Steam. Use a standalone Wine setup for Windows software outside Steam when that application’s needs call for it. Neither approach guarantees that every title will work on every Linux system; the result depends on the game, build, compatibility version, runtime, drivers and configuration.

Proton and Wine at a glance
The shortest accurate definition comes from Valve Software’s Proton README: Proton is a Steam-client tool that lets Windows-exclusive games run on Linux and “uses Wine to facilitate this.” That wording describes a dependency, not a rivalry. Proton contains Wine technology, then adds a Steam-oriented launch and graphics stack.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Aspect | Wine | Proton |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | General compatibility software for Windows applications on Linux. | Compatibility tool for Windows games launched through Steam, based on Wine and additional components. |
| Typical workflow | You configure and launch a Windows application through a Wine setup suited to that application. | You select a Proton tool for a Steam game; Valve recommends the version delivered by the Steam client for most users. |
| Environment model | Wine supplies the Windows-style compatibility technology; the exact environment depends on the setup. | Each game receives its own Wine prefix under that game’s Steam library compatibility data. |
| Steam integration | Wine itself is not Steam’s runtime framework. | Proton is managed by Steam and can run inside Steam Linux Runtime containers. |
| Graphics translation | The path varies with the Wine configuration and application. | Proton documents Vulkan-based DXVK and an OpenGL-based wined3d fallback for specified Direct3D versions. |
| Version choices | No single branch model is established here for standalone Wine. | Stable, Experimental, Hotfix and Bleeding Edge branches have different testing and risk levels. |
| Compatibility | Depends on the application and setup; there is no broad guarantee. | Depends on the game, Proton build, runtime, drivers and game-specific requirements; no universal success claim is justified. |
This distinction answers the practical question: for a Steam game, Proton is normally the right starting point; for a non-Steam Windows application, Wine is the general-purpose layer you investigate.

What Wine does
Wine provides the compatibility technology that translates the expectations of Windows software into services Linux can provide. It is not presented here as a particular launcher, store or game database. A Wine environment is assembled for the application you want to run, and the suitable configuration can differ from one program to another.
Because the evidence available for this comparison does not establish a current standalone Wine installation procedure, there is no single command or universal setup path to recommend. Distribution packages, desktop launchers and community tools can expose Wine differently. Treat the application’s own requirements and your distribution’s current documentation as the authority when setting up software outside Steam.
When Wine is the relevant choice
- You need to run a Windows program that is not a Steam game.
- The software is distributed directly by its developer or through another launcher.
- You need control over a Wine environment rather than Steam’s per-game management.
- A game-specific guide explicitly calls for a standalone Wine configuration.
Those cases do not make Wine “better” than Proton. They simply fall outside Proton’s intended Steam-client workflow.

What Proton adds for Steam games
Proton wraps Wine in a package designed around Steam’s game library. Steam can download and select Proton as a compatibility tool, associate the tool with an individual game and keep that game’s Windows-style data separate from other titles.
Steam-aware management
Valve’s README recommends that most users use the Proton version included by the Steam client. That recommendation avoids making you assemble a matching Wine build and supporting components manually. It also gives Steam a known tool to update and associate with a game.

Game-specific prefixes
Proton creates a separate Wine prefix for each game. A prefix is the Windows-like directory tree and registry-style state that the game sees. Isolation means one title’s configuration does not automatically become another title’s configuration, but it also means that changing or deleting a game’s compatibility data can affect that title’s local state.
Graphics components
Proton documents a Vulkan-based DXVK path and, for Direct3D 9, 10 and 11, an OpenGL-based wined3d path. The choice is a compatibility troubleshooting lever, not a blanket performance upgrade. A different path can help one game or driver combination and hurt another.
Do not confuse Proton, Steam Play and Steam Linux Runtime
Valve uses several labels for different layers. Steam Play is the Steam interface’s broad term for compatibility tools. Proton is the tool that runs Windows games on Linux. Steam Linux Runtime is the container runtime framework that supplies a controlled Linux user-space environment. They can work together, but they are not interchangeable names.
The Steam Linux Runtime documentation maps Proton generations to runtime generations as follows. These are project mappings and can change with later releases:
| Proton generation | Steam Runtime generation | What the mapping means |
|---|---|---|
| Proton 11 or newer | Steam Runtime 4 | The newer Proton generation uses the fourth runtime generation in the documented mapping. |
| Proton 8 through 10 | Steam Runtime 3 | These Proton releases are associated with Runtime 3. |
| Proton 5.13 through 7.0 | Steam Runtime 2 | These releases are associated with Runtime 2. |
A runtime mapping is not a benchmark and does not predict whether a particular game will work. It explains why a Proton change can also change the surrounding Linux user space in which the game starts.

How to choose for a particular game
Steam game: begin with the supplied Proton
- Open the game’s page in your Steam Library.
- Open the game’s Properties and find the Compatibility section. Steam’s wording and layout can change between client releases.
- Enable the option to force a specific compatibility tool, then choose the Proton version supplied in the client. If no game-specific reason exists, start with the default or current stable choice.
- Launch the game normally and check the title’s actual behavior on your hardware: startup, rendering, input, audio, networking and save handling.
- If the game fails, record the Proton version, distribution, graphics driver and error symptoms before changing several variables at once.
Steam’s supplied Proton is the sensible baseline because it is the path Valve documents for most users. A different branch should be selected for a specific reason, such as a current regression report or a fix documented for that game.
Non-Steam Windows game or application: investigate Wine
Proton is described as a tool for use with the Steam client. If the software is not launched by Steam, a standalone Wine setup is the conceptually appropriate starting point. The exact installer, prefix location and launch command depend on the application and distribution, so do not copy a Steam Proton prefix into a generic Wine workflow without application-specific instructions.
Game supplied by another launcher
Some non-Steam launchers can be made to run with Wine-based tools, but this comparison does not establish a current, universal procedure for any particular launcher. Check the launcher’s present requirements and use a configuration maintained for that software rather than assuming that Steam’s Proton settings transfer unchanged.
Where Proton keeps a game’s Windows-style data
Valve’s Proton FAQ locates a game’s prefix under the Steam library that contains the game:
steamapps/compatdata/[appid]/pfx/
[appid] is the game’s Steam application ID. The pfx directory contains the Windows-style environment for that title. The FAQ also notes that saves stored in a Windows-style user directory may be inside this prefix.

Why the location matters
- Each title’s configuration is isolated, so repairing one prefix does not automatically repair another.
- Moving a Steam library can move the associated compatibility data, but an incomplete move can leave the game with a missing or mismatched prefix.
- Deleting compatibility data can remove locally stored settings or saves that are not synchronized elsewhere.
- Before removing a prefix, identify where the game stores saves and make a backup when the data matters.
The path is useful for diagnosis and backup, not an invitation to edit registry files or delete folders casually.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Graphics paths and advanced launch options
Most users should first test the default Proton configuration. The Proton README documents two options that are useful when a game has a graphics-specific problem.
Try wined3d instead of DXVK
To select the OpenGL-based wined3d path instead of Vulkan-based DXVK for Direct3D 9, 10 and 11, add this Steam launch option:
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Use it as a game-specific troubleshooting test. It is not a universal speed setting, and it may reduce performance or introduce different rendering behavior.
Enable a Proton log
To create a Proton log for troubleshooting, use:
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
Reproduce the failure, then inspect the generated log according to the Proton project’s current documentation. A log is most useful when paired with the exact game, Proton branch, distribution, graphics driver and point at which startup fails.
Best Value
Change one variable at a time
- Start from the Steam-supplied Proton choice.
- Capture the symptom and, if needed, enable
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. - Test one alternative Proton branch or one graphics option.
- Compare the result with the original launch, including saves and controller behavior.
- Remove experimental launch options after the test if they do not solve the problem.
Changing the branch, runtime, launch options and driver simultaneously makes the result difficult to interpret and can hide the actual cause.
Proton branches: what Stable, Experimental, Hotfix and Bleeding Edge mean
Valve’s Proton Versions page describes four branch types. They are not four interchangeable performance modes.
| Branch | Testing and intended use | Risk guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Stable | Released after extensive quality assurance and a public release-candidate phase. | Use as the normal starting point unless a game-specific issue calls for another branch. |
| Experimental | Public testing for experimental features; games that work only in Experimental are regression-tested before release, according to Valve’s description. | Consider it when a current game-specific fix or regression reason exists. |
| Hotfix | Usually outdated, but sometimes used for a targeted fix to a new or important game; intended to be short-lived. | Select it only when a current, relevant issue points to it. |
| Bleeding Edge | Automated and untested collection of recent Proton and graphics-component development. | Do not treat it as a routine upgrade. Valve warns it can damage a game prefix or saves. |
Branch names and release guidance are volatile. Recheck Valve’s current page before switching, especially if the game contains valuable local saves.

Why compatibility is not guaranteed
Proton’s purpose is to run Windows games on Linux, but its purpose is not a promise that every Windows title will work. A game can depend on a particular Windows build, launcher, copy-protection system, online service, graphics feature, controller path or middleware component. The compatibility result can also change when the game, Proton, Steam Runtime, driver or distribution changes.
The official materials cited here do not establish a current compatibility verdict, percentage, game count or performance advantage for any named title. Do not infer that Proton is always faster than Wine, that every Steam game works, or that a reported success on one machine applies to yours.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm that the game is actually launching through the intended Steam library and that the client is fully updated.
- Use the Steam-provided stable Proton version first.
- Check current, game-specific reports for the title and note the Proton version, distribution and graphics driver used by the report.
- Test one documented alternative, such as Experimental for a known fix or the wined3d option for a Vulkan-related rendering problem.
- Enable a Proton log if the failure is reproducible and provide the log with system details when asking for help.
- Back up saves before deleting or recreating the game’s prefix.
- Return to the stable/default configuration after testing so you know which setting is responsible for the final result.
Should you use Proton or Wine for Linux gaming?
| Your situation | Best first step | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The game is in Steam | Use the Proton version supplied by Steam. | Proton is designed for the Steam client and Steam manages the tool and per-game environment. |
| The Windows program is not a Steam game | Evaluate a standalone Wine setup tailored to that program. | Wine is the general compatibility layer; Proton’s documented role is Steam-client gaming. |
| A Steam game fails on the default branch | Check current game-specific information, then test a documented branch or launch option. | Compatibility is title- and configuration-dependent. |
| You are considering Bleeding Edge | Do not switch routinely; use it only for a clearly justified test and protect local data. | Valve describes it as automated and untested and warns about possible prefix or save damage. |
The choice is therefore based more on the software’s distribution channel than on a simple quality ranking. Proton is the integrated Steam path; Wine is the broader underlying compatibility technology and the relevant standalone path.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Proton uses Wine; it is not a separate replacement for Wine at the same layer.
- For Steam games, Valve’s documented default is the Proton tool supplied by Steam.
- Steam Play, Proton and Steam Linux Runtime refer to different parts of the launch stack.
- Every Proton game gets its own prefix under
steamapps/compatdata/[appid]/pfx/, where local Windows-style data and sometimes saves reside. - Stable, Experimental, Hotfix and Bleeding Edge differ in maturity and risk; Bleeding Edge is explicitly untested.
- No compatibility percentage or universal performance claim is established, so judge a title on your own hardware and current game-specific evidence.
