Ordinary email to or from Gmail is generally protected only while it travels between servers; Google can still access messages handled by Gmail. Proton’s strongest protections are end-to-end encryption between Proton users and zero-access encryption for mail stored in a Proton mailbox.
What “Google can’t read” means in practice
The headline is accurate for a message exchanged only between Proton Mail users: Proton says those messages are end-to-end encrypted by default, so Google is not involved in handling their contents. It is also possible to send an end-to-end encrypted message to a non-Proton recipient using a password-protected email or compatible PGP setup.

But a regular email sent between Proton Mail and a Gmail address is not automatically end-to-end encrypted. When the message moves between providers, TLS may protect it in transit, but that is not the same as encrypting it so only sender and recipient can read it. Gmail can access messages handled by Gmail, including when a Gmail account is connected to Proton. Proton’s privacy policy describes this connected-account behavior.

| Message or data | Protection | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Mail between Proton users | End-to-end encrypted by default | Proton says only the intended users can read message contents. |
| Mail to a non-Proton recipient using password-protected email or compatible PGP | End-to-end encryption when configured for the recipient | The recipient needs the password or appropriate PGP capability to read it. |
| Ordinary mail to or from another provider | Typically TLS in transit when the other server supports it | TLS protects the connection, not the message from the recipient’s provider. The external provider may read and retain a copy. |
| Mail stored in a Proton mailbox | Zero-access encryption for stored message content | Proton says it cannot access encrypted message content after it is encrypted and stored. This does not remove readable copies held by an external sender or recipient. |
Proton says message bodies and attachments are fully encrypted, while subject lines and sender and recipient addresses are encrypted but not end-to-end encrypted. Its explanation of these distinctions is in What is encrypted within Proton Mail?

What Proton can still see
Encryption does not hide all information needed to route and operate email. Proton’s privacy policy says SMTP limitations leave it access to sender and recipient addresses, the originating IP address of incoming messages, attachment names, subject lines, and sent and received times. Proton also says unencrypted external messages are scanned in memory for spam and viruses before being encrypted and written to disk; it says it cannot scan message content after encryption.
Proton says its Mail servers are located in Switzerland, Germany, or Norway and that backups may be retained for up to 30 days. Its policy notes an exception to the broad description of its servers for some hide-my-email alias functionality hosted on contracted European cloud infrastructure. These are Proton’s own disclosures, not a guarantee that a provider has no visibility into email activity. See the Proton Mail Privacy Policy for the full terms.

Is Proton Mail free, and what do paid plans add?
Proton lists Free, Mail Plus, and Proton Unlimited. The company says the Free plan has the same encryption level as paid plans; paying is not required to get the core encryption protection. Paid plans chiefly add capacity and convenience, including more storage, additional addresses, custom domains, external email-client support, and other features. The exact combination depends on the current plan comparison.

Account security and other protections
Email encryption protects message contents; it does not replace securing the account itself. Proton says users can enable sign-in two-factor authentication with a YubiKey or another U2F/FIDO2-compliant hardware security key. A hardware key can provide phishing-resistant sign-in protection, but it does not encrypt ordinary messages sent to external providers. Keep a backup sign-in method or spare key so losing the device does not lock you out.
Proton also describes password-protected messages to external recipients, PGP support, Key Transparency, post-quantum-ready keys when enabled, and enhanced tracking protection. The company says its apps are open source and independently audited, with audit results publicly available. Those are Proton’s product and security claims; the available information here does not establish the date, scope, or findings of any specific audit. Details are on Proton’s security overview.

Who should consider Proton Mail?
- A good fit: people whose important conversations are with other Proton users, or who are prepared to use password-protected email or PGP for external recipients.
- Consider the limits: people who mainly exchange ordinary mail with Gmail or other providers should not assume those messages are end-to-end encrypted or unreadable to the external provider.
- Choose a plan by capacity and workflow: compare storage, addresses, custom-domain support, and client compatibility against actual needs; Proton says the Free tier has the same encryption level.
Proton’s product page says it serves “over 100 million users and organizations,” but the page does not state the year for that figure; treat it as a company-reported adoption claim, not an independently verified count. Proton Mail product page.
