Protocol Zero is a CurseForge Minecraft modpack by leo_san that turns ordinary survival into a long-form zombie-apocalypse scenario. You explore a ruined world, manage food, nutrition and thirst, follow quests and lore, and search for a cure while infections, raids and smarter zombies make conventional shelter unreliable. As of October 13, 2026, the project listing reported 100,198 downloads.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
The most important installation decision is the branch: the current 1.20.1 files include separate Forge releases named PHAY and SPORE, while a 1.21.1 NeoForge file remains listed even though the creator says NeoForge development was abandoned in favor of the Forge versions. Match the Minecraft version, loader and pack file exactly; mixing them is the fastest route to a failed launch.

What Protocol Zero changes
Protocol Zero is built around a decayed civilization rather than a normal Minecraft progression loop. Its official description presents destroyed cities, deteriorating houses and occasional villagers’ outposts instead of a consistently populated landscape. Overhauled biomes, tense atmosphere and structures that are not densely or predictably placed make travel a planning problem: a marked road or familiar village cannot be assumed to be nearby.
The pack combines several pressures:
- Survival management: food quality, nutrition and thirst matter alongside health and hunger.
- Infection: the listed PHAY and SPORE branches use different infection families, including Phayriosis and Spore/Sporeinqui content.
- Custom difficulty: increased mob health, raids and recurring events raise the cost of careless exploration.
- Quest and lore progression: a complete quest system explains the core mods and frames exploration around finding a cure.
- Predatory zombie behavior: the creator says zombies can hear and smell players, follow blood scent and dig through blocks to reach them.
That combination is why a simple “box yourself into a dirt room” strategy is weaker here than in a basic zombie-themed pack. Noise, scent, damaged structures, supplies and escape routes all become part of base design.

“Protocol Zero: Zombie Apocalypse puts you into a decayed world falling apart where civilizations struggle to survive, its your job to explore the world looking for a cure for this mystery.”
The wording is the creator’s description; the practical implication is that the pack is designed as a sustained scenario, not a short combat challenge.

Choose the branch by starting with the Minecraft version and loader you already intend to run. Do not select a file solely because its number looks newer.
| Branch or file | Minecraft version | Loader | What the listing establishes | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [PHAY] Zombie Protocol Zero – A Modern Zombie Apocalypse-0.3.0(hotfix) | 1.20.1 | Forge | Current main 1.20.1 file shown on October 13, 2026; uploaded October 13, 2026 | Use when you want the current PHAY infection branch on 1.20.1 |
| [SPORE] Protocol Zero A Modern Zombie Apocalypse-2.0.9(hotfix) | 1.20.1 | Forge | Separate 1.20.1 Forge branch listed in the files index | Use when you specifically want the SPORE infection branch |
| Protocol Zero 1.9.2 (UPDATE) | 1.21.1 | NeoForge | Still listed in the files index, despite the creator’s statement that NeoForge was abandoned in favor of two Forge versions | Only use if the files page and your launcher both still support this older or separately maintained branch |
PHAY and SPORE are distinct 1.20.1 Forge branches, not interchangeable patch labels. The public information confirms different infection families, but it does not publish a complete matrix of quest order, infection rates, balance, recipes or progression. Treat deeper differences as unverified until you inspect the branch’s current changelog or test it yourself.
Why the NeoForge status needs caution
There is a conflict within the creator’s own listing. The project page says the NeoForge version has been abandoned, while the current files index still shows a 1.21.1 NeoForge 1.9.2 update. Consider that file an older or separately maintained branch, not proof of active parity with the Forge releases. Check the files page immediately before installation and use the loader named on the selected file.

Prepare before installing
Make these checks before creating a world:
- Confirm whether your launcher is configured for Minecraft 1.20.1 or 1.21.1.
- Confirm that the selected profile uses Forge for PHAY or SPORE, or NeoForge only for the listed 1.21.1 branch.
- Use the exact file name and hotfix designation shown in the current files index.
- Reserve enough storage for the pack, its libraries, world saves and backups. No official minimum RAM figure or universal FPS target is published, so avoid treating an internet-wide memory recommendation as a Protocol Zero requirement.
- Back up existing Minecraft worlds before changing loaders or importing a modpack profile.
- For multiplayer, decide whether every player will use the same branch and exact pack build before anyone creates a shared world.
Install Protocol Zero in a launcher
The safest method is to install the pack through a launcher that can read its CurseForge project files. Labels vary slightly between launcher versions, but the sequence is consistent.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the launcher’s Minecraft modpack or browsing section and search for Protocol Zero by leo_san.
- Open the project’s files or versions list rather than accepting an automatically selected build.
- Select the desired Minecraft version. For the two current Forge choices, select 1.20.1; select 1.21.1 only when deliberately using the listed NeoForge branch.
- Choose the branch by its full file name: PHAY 0.3.0 hotfix or SPORE 2.0.9 hotfix for the 1.20.1 Forge options.
- Verify the loader displayed by the launcher matches the file: Forge for PHAY and SPORE, NeoForge for the 1.21.1 file.
- Install or create the profile, then let the launcher download the modpack and dependencies completely before pressing Play.
- Launch once without adding extra mods, shaders or resource packs. This gives you a clean baseline for diagnosing a loader or dependency problem.
Manual profile checks
If your launcher offers an import or custom-profile workflow, use the project’s current pack file and preserve its generated mod list. Do not copy individual jars from one branch into another. A PHAY profile with SPORE files, or a Forge profile pointed at NeoForge libraries, is not a supported hybrid.
Verify the first launch
A successful title screen is only the first check. Create a temporary single-player world and confirm:
- The game reaches the title screen without a missing-mod or wrong-loader error.
- The quest interface appears and contains Protocol Zero content.
- Food, nutrition and thirst mechanics are present.
- The expected infection-related content for the chosen branch appears in the installed mod list or in-game guide.
- The world generates the ruined structures and atmosphere associated with the pack.
Quit after this smoke test and inspect the log if anything is absent. Starting a long-term world before confirming the branch can leave you with a save tied to the wrong progression or generated terrain.
How the infection system affects play
Infection is the pack’s central pressure, but the public description does not provide a complete numerical model. It identifies Spore/Sporeinqui and Phayriosis branches and says parasites and other infections spread to take over the world. The practical distinction is therefore branch-level: PHAY and SPORE should be expected to deliver different infection experiences.

What is confirmed
- Infection is not merely cosmetic; it is presented as a force that can spread through the world.
- The named infection families are associated with different Protocol Zero branches.
- The cure objective is part of the pack’s scenario and quest framing.
What is not published
The listing does not establish identical symptoms, transmission rates, progression thresholds, treatment recipes or balance between PHAY and SPORE. Do not assume that an antidote, exposure rule or quest step from one branch applies to the other. Read the in-game quest text and branch-specific guides, and record the version when sharing instructions with other players.
Why ordinary zombie tactics fail
The creator specifically describes zombies that can hear and smell players, path-track using blood scent and dig through blocks. That behavior changes both combat and construction.
Sound and scent discipline
Mining, fighting and moving through a damaged building may attract attention even when a wall separates you from the outside. Blood scent means that surviving an encounter can still create a tracking problem. Treat a noisy fight as a relocation decision: heal, check exits and avoid assuming the immediate area is safe once the last visible zombie falls.
Dig-proof thinking
A single layer of ordinary blocks is not a dependable long-term barrier if hostile mobs can dig toward you. Build with depth, closed approaches and a fallback route rather than one sealed room. Keep critical supplies away from the outer wall, and make sure you can leave without opening the only entrance directly into a horde.
Horde timing
Periodic hordes are part of the official feature description. Keep an emergency kit, food and water in more than one location, and avoid beginning a long expedition just before a known event window in your world. The listing does not publish a universal horde schedule, so learn the timing from your own branch and save.

Exploration and base planning
Overhauled biomes, destroyed cities, decayed houses and occasional villagers’ outposts make scavenging valuable but unpredictable. Plan trips as routes rather than as a straight march to a single waypoint.
Use outposts as opportunities, not guarantees
Villagers’ outposts can provide a recognizable landmark and a possible resupply point, but the pack does not promise dense or regular placement. Carry enough food and thirst supplies to return without finding another settlement.
Stage supplies
Place small caches along routes that you expect to revisit. Separate emergency healing, food and water from ordinary building materials so one failed fight does not remove every recovery option. Because infection and blood tracking can turn a local encounter into a pursuit, a second cache is also a fallback if your first shelter becomes compromised.

When a quest refers to an item, infection or structure you cannot find, first verify the installed branch and Minecraft version. PHAY and SPORE are separate 1.20.1 Forge releases, so a guide written for one may describe content that is absent or balanced differently in the other.
Multiplayer and server play
The official page says Protocol Zero can be played on servers. All participants should use the same Minecraft version, loader, branch and pack build. A client running PHAY 0.3.0 hotfix cannot reliably join a server configured for SPORE 2.0.9 hotfix merely because both use Minecraft 1.20.1.

- Choose the branch before generating the server world.
- Install the matching Forge or NeoForge server files and the same modpack release used by clients.
- Copy the complete server-side configuration and mod list; do not assemble a server by selecting only the visible zombie mods.
- Start the server once, stop it cleanly and back up the generated world before inviting players.
- Have each player launch the identical client profile and test joining before beginning a permanent base.
Server hosting is a practical fit for this pack because quests, events, raids and route planning benefit from multiple survivors, but the official listing does not publish a minimum server-RAM requirement, player-capacity guarantee or measured performance target. Size the server using your host’s current guidance and monitor logs and tick performance after adding players.
Performance and troubleshooting
The creator’s performance section says rendering and FPS issues were fixed. That is useful evidence that known performance work has been done, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate on every system.
Crashes before the title screen
- Check the Minecraft version first: 1.20.1 files require a 1.20.1 profile, while the listed NeoForge file targets 1.21.1.
- Check the loader next: PHAY and SPORE are Forge branches; the 1.21.1 file is NeoForge.
- Remove added shaders, performance mods and manual jar replacements, then retry with a clean profile.
- Confirm that the launcher finished downloading every dependency instead of using a partially completed installation.
Missing quests or infection content
Verify that you installed the intended branch rather than a similarly named file. If the quest book is empty or describes a different scenario, create a fresh test profile with the exact file name and compare the installed mod list. Do not migrate a world between PHAY and SPORE while diagnosing progression.
Lag or rendering problems in a working game
- Test without shaders and high-resolution resource packs.
- Lower view distance and simulation distance before changing gameplay mods.
- Watch whether a problem appears during hordes, in dense structures or only near a particular base.
- Record the branch, Minecraft version, loader and pack file when reporting an issue; “Protocol Zero is laggy” omits the details needed to reproduce it.
Choosing between the branches
| Your priority | Recommended choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Newest listed 1.20.1 main file | PHAY 0.3.0 hotfix | It is the current main 1.20.1 file shown on October 13, 2026. |
| Trying the alternate infection family | SPORE 2.0.9 hotfix | It is a separate 1.20.1 Forge branch associated with Spore/Sporeinqui content. |
| Already committed to Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge | Check the 1.9.2 update file first | The file remains listed, but the creator also says NeoForge was abandoned; status and feature parity need confirmation. |
| Playing with friends | Whichever one every player and the server can match exactly | Branch, loader, Minecraft version and build must align. |
If you have no reason to use 1.21.1 NeoForge, the two 1.20.1 Forge branches are the clearer choices because the creator’s current direction favors Forge. Select PHAY for the current main file, or SPORE when its infection theme is the reason you are installing the pack.
Quick Recap
Bottom-line installation checklist
- Pick Minecraft 1.20.1 or 1.21.1 first.
- Match Forge or NeoForge to the selected file.
- Choose PHAY and SPORE deliberately; they are separate 1.20.1 branches.
- Treat the 1.21.1 NeoForge release as an older or separately maintained option until the files page confirms otherwise.
- Test quests, thirst, nutrition, infection content and world generation in a temporary world.
- For servers, synchronize the exact branch and pack build across the server and every client.
- Build for sound, scent, digging and hordes rather than relying on a one-block wall.
