Protesters interrupted Data After Dark, a pro-data-center party at Pubkey in Washington, DC. After one protester jumped onstage during a toast, attendees booed and chanted “USA, USA,” and security escorted her out; two more protesters interrupted soon afterward, according to Washingtonian’s September 29, 2026, report.
What happened at Data After Dark?
Journalist Jonas Du organized the gathering, with Young Voices as a co-sponsor. Du estimated that about 600 people attended. The party featured speakers, an AI-themed photo booth, and branded cocktails, Washingtonian reported.

Concerns about household costs
Sisters Livi and Grace Plihal, whom Washingtonian interviewed outside the venue, described worries about affordability. Livi said her winter electricity bill for a 300-square-foot studio apartment had reached $250. “For my 300-square-foot studio apartment, they’re up to $250 in the winter, which is not sustainable for me,” she told the publication.

That is Livi’s account of her own bill. The event report does not establish that data centers caused the bill or identify the utility, billing period, or other factors behind it.
Concerns about work and AI
The sisters also said they worried that AI could threaten their work. Their comments explain their stated motivation for protesting; they do not establish whether, or how, AI will affect their particular jobs.

What did supporters say?
Du described the party as a way to bring together people who support innovation while data centers face public-relations challenges. “I think it’s simply just useful to get pro-innovation people in the same room to work together on this issue and make the connections that might be necessary to solve the PR crisis,” he told Washingtonian.
He objected to the protest method, saying: “I really do have no respect for people that try to make their case through interruptions, especially interruptions that violate the free speech rights of others.” One attendee argued that data centers can provide tax revenue; other attendees expressed support for technological development. These were participants’ arguments, not measured outcomes documented by the event report.

Grace Plihal, reflecting on the interruption, told Washingtonian: “I’ve done disruptions before, and this was pretty mild.”
What does the reported polling say?
Washingtonian attributed two opposition figures to a 2026 New York Times poll: 61 percent of Americans opposed construction of data centers in the United States, as did 78 percent of people aged 18–29. The Washingtonian article does not provide the poll’s field dates, sample, question wording, or methodology, so those details—and the original poll—cannot be assessed from its account.

What the party report does—and does not—show
The coverage captures a clash between protesters’ stated concerns about affordability and job security and attendees’ support for innovation and potential public revenue. It does not determine the effects of any particular data-center project. Establishing local costs and benefits would require evidence about the specific community, facility, timeline, and who pays or receives revenue.
