Apache ZooKeeper’s CVE-2026-79993 can let a network-reachable client delete eligible empty persistent znodes without authentication or DELETE ACL permission. Apache lists ZooKeeper 3.9.0–3.9.5 and 3.8.0–3.8.6 as affected and recommends upgrading to 3.9.6 or 3.8.7, respectively.
What the ZooKeeper deleteContainer ACL bypass does
The defect is in ZooKeeper’s internal deleteContainer request path, opcode 0x14 (decimal 20). Apache’s security advisory says this path skips both the session check and the DELETE access-control-list (ACL) check that apply to the regular delete operation, opcode 2. As a result, a request can delete eligible empty znodes despite ACL restrictions.

The impact is specifically deletion of empty persistent znodes. Apache identifies regular persistent nodes, container nodes, and TTL nodes as possible targets. The advisory does not say that non-empty znodes or their data can be deleted through this issue.

deleteContainer is considered internal-only, and the official ZooKeeper client does not provide an API for it. However, Apache says a client able to open a plain TCP session to the ZooKeeper client port can send the raw protocol opcode. The advisory identifies port 2181 as the default and describes the attack as possible without authentication or ACL permissions. Network reachability to that client port is therefore the relevant exposure condition described by Apache.

CVE-2026-79993 affected versions and fixed releases
Check the deployed ZooKeeper version against its branch. Apache recommends upgrading to the corresponding fixed release:

What ZooKeeper administrators should do
- Inventory deployed servers. Identify each ZooKeeper deployment’s version and branch, including instances managed by a platform or bundled in another service.
- Match each version to the table above. Versions within either listed range are affected. Compare like with like: upgrade the 3.9 branch to 3.9.6 or the 3.8 branch to 3.8.7, following Apache’s upgrade guidance.
- Plan and complete the upgrade. Use the release and operational procedures appropriate to your deployment. Confirm the running server version afterward so the inventory reflects the upgraded state.
