The strongest protection for a stolen laptop’s files is full-drive encryption enabled before the theft. Check that it is on, store its recovery key somewhere separate from the laptop, and set up the device’s location and lock features in advance. Keep a separate backup of important files. If the laptop is stolen, use the platform’s official tools from a trusted device, secure accounts that were signed in, and report the theft. Remote commands have prerequisites and may not take effect until the laptop is powered on and connected.
Why encryption matters most
A screen lock helps prevent casual access while a laptop is in your possession, but it is drive encryption that helps protect files if someone removes the storage or tries to read it offline. Encryption must be enabled before the device is lost; location tools, passwords, and backups are useful layers, but they do not replace it.

On Windows, Microsoft’s BitLocker overview explains that BitLocker encrypts drives to help prevent offline access to their contents. Eligible Windows devices may have Device Encryption available automatically, while BitLocker Drive Encryption gives more manual control in advanced scenarios. Check the actual encryption status rather than assuming it is active.

On a Mac, Apple’s FileVault documentation describes protection for data at rest. Unlocking protected internal storage requires appropriate credentials or a cryptographic recovery key. The details depend on the Mac’s hardware generation and storage configuration, so confirm the protection and recovery arrangements for your specific device.

Keep the recovery key away from the laptop
A recovery key can restore access if you are locked out, but it is sensitive: a thief who obtains both the laptop and its key may defeat the protection the encryption provides. Microsoft recommends backing up the BitLocker recovery key and cautions against keeping a USB drive or printout containing it with the PC. A USB drive is one possible storage medium, not an encryption tool; keep it in a separate secure place. See Microsoft’s instructions for backing up a BitLocker recovery key.
For either platform, make sure you can retrieve the key or recovery information without relying on the laptop itself. Do not leave a printed copy, key-bearing USB drive, or other recovery credential in the laptop bag.

Set up tracking and locking before a theft
Windows
Microsoft’s consumer Find My Device feature must be enabled in advance. It requires a personal Microsoft account, an administrator account, and location services enabled. If the device is missing, use Microsoft’s official Find and lock a lost Windows device guidance to locate it and lock it where available. That consumer guide does not establish a general remote-wipe capability, so do not assume you can erase every Windows laptop remotely through this feature.
Mac
Set up Find My on the Mac before it goes missing. Depending on the supported model and region, Find My can show an approximate location, mark the Mac as lost, and request a remote erase. Apple’s Find My feature availability guide describes which features are available for supported devices.

Remote actions are not instantaneous guarantees: Apple says the Mac must be powered on and connected for lock or erase commands to take effect. If it is offline, an erase request waits until it reconnects. Consider whether locating the Mac could help with recovery before requesting erasure. Apple explains the process in its guides to a lost or stolen Mac and erasing a device in Find My.
On supported Macs, Activation Lock can make it harder for another person to turn off Find My, erase the Mac, or reactivate it without the owner’s Apple Account credentials or device passcode. Availability and behavior depend on support for the device; Apple’s Activation Lock for Mac page has the platform details.

Keep a backup that is separate from the laptop
Maintain a separate backup of important files and make sure you know how to restore from it. A backup helps with data recovery if the laptop cannot be recovered or must be erased. It does not prevent someone from accessing an unencrypted drive, so treat backup and encryption as distinct protections.

If the laptop has already been stolen
- Use a trusted device. Open the platform’s official account page or app from another device you trust. If the lost-device feature was set up, use it to locate or lock the laptop where supported.
- Decide whether to request an erase. Weigh the chance of recovery against the need to protect local data, and account for the platform’s requirements. On a Mac that is offline, an erase request waits until it reconnects; Windows consumer Find My Device should not be assumed to provide a general remote wipe.
- Secure accounts used on the laptop. Change the password for the primary device account and other important accounts that were signed in. Revoke active sessions where the service offers that option.
- Report the theft. Contact local law enforcement. Apple notes that the Mac’s serial number may be requested. If the laptop belongs to work or school, notify its IT administrator promptly.
Reduce the chance of an opportunistic theft
Do not leave a laptop unattended in a public place, even briefly. The Federal Trade Commission includes this advice in its consumer guidance, Heads Up: Stop. Think. Connect. It is a practical precaution, not a quantified estimate of theft risk.
