Promptbar is described by its developer as a Chrome extension that inserts a saved prompt into a webpage text box when you type //. It is intended for reusing prompt templates across sites such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, but its broad host permissions are an important trade-off—and its privacy and availability claims have not been independently confirmed.
How Promptbar is meant to work
In a September 21, 2026 DEV Community post, developer madebypoint describes a three-part workflow:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Type
//in a text box on a webpage. - Choose a saved prompt from the list that appears.
- Promptbar inserts the selected text into the current field.
The idea is to save prompts you use repeatedly rather than type them from scratch. The developer names ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and support tickets as example destinations. Those are examples in the product announcement, not independently tested compatibility results. The post describes the trigger as working across webpages. Can Promptbar handle prompt templates?
The announcement says saved prompts can contain {{variables}}, allowing a template to mark parts for variation. For example, a saved prompt could include a placeholder for a topic or audience. The post does not explain how Promptbar asks you to fill those variables or whether it provides a particular variable-entry interface, so those details should not be assumed.

What permissions and privacy claims should you consider?
To detect // across websites, Promptbar needs broad host permissions. The developer explicitly flags this trade-off: “One thing to know upfront: it needs broad host permissions to make the // trigger work on any page.” A permission that lets an extension operate across sites is broader than access limited to a single AI service; consider whether that scope fits your use before installing. The same post claims prompts are stored locally, there is no account or sign-up, and Promptbar has no cloud backend or AI service of its own and does not collect or transmit the data. These are the developer’s assertions, not independently verified findings. The exact Chrome Web Store listing was not surfaced, so its current permission disclosures, privacy information, and actual data behavior could not be confirmed. Developer announcement
Is Promptbar free and available now?
Madebypoint described Promptbar as free, with no paid tier, when the post was published on September 21, 2026. That is a dated statement, not confirmation of today’s price or store status. Although the post links to a Chrome Web Store listing, the exact listing was not confirmed, so current availability and version remain uncertain. Developer announcement · Post details

If you are evaluating Promptbar or another prompt tool, focus on the practical differences that matter for your workflow:
- Where it works: one AI site or text boxes across webpages.
- How prompts are inserted: a typed trigger, shortcut, button, or context-menu action.
- Template support: whether variables are supported and how they are filled in.
- Data handling: local storage, cloud sync, account requirements, and the information the extension says it collects.
- Permission scope: whether access is limited to particular sites or covers many webpages.
- Price and availability: confirm these in the current listing rather than relying on an older announcement.
Another distinct result, AI Prompt Saver, describes offline browser storage, right-click insertion, folders, and cross-browser sync. Those are claims about that separate product, not features of Promptbar, and the available information does not establish a tested, comprehensive comparison. AI Prompt Saver listing
