For general prompt compression, start by evaluating LLMLingua; for question-aware compression of long, multi-document context, evaluate LongLLMLingua. LLMLingua-2 is another option in the same project family, described as task-agnostic. None is a guaranteed way to cut production costs or improve answers: measure retained quality, token savings, and the compressor’s own runtime on your tasks and target model.

What prompt compression does—and what it can cost you

Prompt compression reduces or reorganizes the material sent to a language model so the prompt uses fewer tokens. Depending on the method, it may remove less useful tokens, select relevant text, or change the order of retained information. This is useful when prompts contain repeated instructions, lengthy examples, or more retrieved context than the model needs.

Fewer tokens are not, by themselves, a successful result. If compression removes a date, qualification, exception, or supporting passage that determines the answer, the shorter prompt can perform worse. Microsoft Research describes a trade-off between compression ratio and completeness, and notes that both the density and the position of key information can affect downstream results. Evaluate answer quality and evidence retention alongside token count.

Which prompt compression tools are worth evaluating?

Tool or approach Best fit to investigate What the cited evidence establishes Important qualification
LLMLingua General prompt compression with control over which prompt sections are compressed or preserved. The EMNLP 2023 paper describes coarse-to-fine, token-level compression with a budget controller and reports up to 20× compression with little performance loss across GSM8K, BBH, ShareGPT, and Arxiv-March23. That is a result on the paper’s datasets and setup, not a production guarantee. Microsoft’s repository documents a structured prompt interface and optional compression rates; check the current repository examples for implementation details.
LongLLMLingua Long-context question answering, including multi-document QA or RAG, when the user’s question is available at compression time. The ACL 2024 paper reports benchmark-specific NaturalQuestions, LooGLE, and latency results; the method uses question-aware compression and document reordering. Results depend on the benchmark and experimental setup. Reordering and compression can change which evidence is retained or where it appears.
LLMLingua-2 A task-agnostic option to benchmark alongside the other LLMLingua methods. The Microsoft project materials describe distillation from a larger model to a smaller token-classification model. The materials cited here do not establish current speed, model coverage, or superiority over the other options. Check the current code and paper before relying on those properties.
Other method families Teams comparing different compression strategies rather than choosing only within the LLMLingua family. The 2025 IJCAI PCToolkit paper groups approaches into reinforcement-learning methods such as KiS and SCRL, LLM-scoring methods such as Selective Context, and LLM-annotation methods including the LLMLingua family. The taxonomy does not establish that the listed tools are equally mature, maintained, or interchangeable.

LLMLingua for general prompt trimming

LLMLingua’s EMNLP 2023 paper describes a coarse-to-fine process that uses a budget controller and iteratively compresses at the token level. It also describes instruction tuning intended to align the compressor with the target model’s distribution. In experiments on GSM8K, BBH, ShareGPT, and Arxiv-March23, the authors report up to 20× compression with little performance loss. Treat that as a result from those datasets and that paper’s setup, not an expected savings or quality level for your application.

The Microsoft repository describes a structured prompt interface in which sections can be marked for compression or preservation, with optional compression rates. That can help teams express which prompt components are eligible to change, rather than treating the entire prompt as equally disposable. Confirm the current interface, dependencies, and examples in the repository before integrating it.

LongLLMLingua for question-aware long context

LongLLMLingua is designed for long-context cases where useful material may be sparse or poorly positioned. Microsoft Research describes a question-aware, coarse-to-fine approach that reorders documents, adjusts compression rates dynamically, and can recover selected subsequences after compression. Those features make it relevant to evaluate when a question is known before compressing retrieved documents.

Huiqiang Jiang and coauthors’ ACL 2024 paper reports up to a 21.4% performance improvement on NaturalQuestions with around 4× fewer tokens using GPT-3.5-Turbo, and a 94.0% cost reduction on LooGLE. The paper also reports 1.4×–2.6× end-to-end latency acceleration when compressing prompts of about 10,000 tokens at ratios of 2×–6×. These are benchmark-specific experimental results, not a general forecast for other models, prompt lengths, or workloads.

LLMLingua-2 and broader alternatives

The Microsoft project materials identify LLMLingua-2 as task-agnostic and describe distillation from a larger model into a smaller token-classification model. Those descriptions are a reason to include it in an evaluation, not enough to assume a particular runtime, compatible model set, or advantage over LLMLingua or LongLLMLingua.

PCToolkit’s 2025 IJCAI paper is useful when broadening a shortlist beyond one project family. It covers evaluation across reconstruction, summarization, reasoning, question answering, few-shot learning, synthetic tasks, and code completion, and includes metrics such as accuracy, BLEU, ROUGE, BERTScore, Token-F1, and edit distance. The toolkit’s taxonomy and metrics can inform a test plan; they do not establish that every categorized method is ready for the same deployment.

How to choose between general and query-aware compression

  • Choose a general prompt-compression candidate when you want to reduce repeated or low-value material across a prompt and do not need compression to depend on a particular question.
  • Evaluate a query-aware candidate such as LongLLMLingua when the question is available during compression and the prompt contains long, multi-document context, as in some retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines.
  • Compare more than one method family if the cost of a missed detail is high, the prompt types vary substantially, or a simpler selection/scoring method might meet the same token budget.
  • Keep an uncompressed or lightly compressed path available for prompts where required evidence is easily lost, unless testing shows the compressed path preserves the necessary information.

Compression is not a substitute for checking retrieval quality. If a RAG pipeline retrieves irrelevant or incomplete documents, shortening those documents will not fix the underlying retrieval problem. Conversely, a longer prompt is not automatically better if it buries the evidence the model needs.

How to benchmark a compressor before shipping

  1. Build a representative test set. Include real prompt shapes and questions from the target workload: short and long contexts, multiple documents, edge cases, and examples where a small detail changes the correct answer. Keep expected answers or other task-specific quality criteria.
  2. Run the same cases with and without compression. Use the intended target model and settings. For query-aware compression, provide the actual question at the same point in the pipeline where production would provide it.
  3. Measure end-to-end token use. Record tokens sent to the compressor, any tokens consumed by the compressor itself, and tokens sent to the downstream model. Compare the full pipeline cost, not just the shortened prompt.
  4. Measure latency across the whole path. Include compression time, model-call time, and any added processing. A shorter downstream prompt can still increase total latency if compression takes too long.
  5. Score task quality and inspect failures. Use metrics suited to the job: for example, accuracy for answer correctness, or text-overlap and semantic metrics for generation tasks. Review cases where compression changes the answer, drops a citation or qualification, or moves useful evidence away from a position the model can use.
  6. Test several compression budgets. Compare quality and end-to-end cost at more than one ratio instead of choosing the most aggressive setting by token savings alone. Select a budget that meets the application’s quality requirements and failure-cost tolerance.
  7. Recheck after material changes. Changes to prompts, retrieval, the target model, compressor versions, or document types can alter results. Treat compatibility and repository maintenance as current deployment checks, not permanent properties.

PCToolkit’s 2025 IJCAI evaluation framework spans multiple task types and metrics—including accuracy, BLEU, ROUGE, BERTScore, Token-F1, and edit distance—which can help shape this test plan. A published benchmark is a useful reference, but your own prompts and target model determine whether a compressor is suitable for your application.

What to verify in a library before integrating it

  • Prompt controls: Can you distinguish sections that may be compressed from instructions or content that should be preserved? Are compression rates configurable?
  • Question and document handling: Does the method use the query, reorder documents, or support recovery of selected subsequences where your pipeline needs those behaviors?
  • Runtime dependencies: What models and compute does compression require, and how does that affect cost, latency, and deployment?
  • Target compatibility: Does the library work with your chosen model and framework versions? Confirm this in current project documentation and code; compatibility can change.
  • Failure behavior: Can your application detect empty, malformed, or inadequate compressed context and fall back to a safer path?

The Microsoft LLMLingua repository provides structured compression controls and usage examples, but project materials alone do not settle the version compatibility or maintenance status required for a particular deployment. Verify those details against the versions you plan to run.
