Choose a projector cable by matching the source device’s video output to the projector’s input, then check that the connection supports your desired resolution and refresh rate. HDMI is usually the simplest option when both devices have HDMI. USB-C’s shape alone does not mean it can send video.
Start by checking both devices
Identify the video output on your laptop, phone, streaming device, or other source, and the input on the projector. Projectors may have HDMI, USB, VGA, component, or DisplayPort connections, and ports vary by model. Check each device’s manual to confirm what its ports do; a USB-A port used for media playback is not necessarily a video input. Epson’s connection guide describes common projector connection types.

- Source output: Note the exact port and whether the device supports video through it.
- Projector input: Find a matching port, or identify the conversion you need.
- Signal and distance: Check the target resolution and refresh rate, plus the cable run length and any power requirements.
Which cable should you use?
HDMI: usually the simplest match
If both devices have HDMI, a direct HDMI cable is a straightforward way to carry video and audio over one connection. Choose a cable that supports the signal you intend to use; the connector fitting does not establish that the cable can handle every resolution and refresh rate.
For one specific case, Epson’s instructions for a 4K-at-120Hz setup call for an HDMI 2.1-rated Ultra High Speed cable. That requirement applies to the cited setup, not every projector. Intel’s HDMI cable guide, last reviewed on 2025-02-06, describes Standard HDMI cables as tested for commonly used 720p-to-1080p applications. Check the specifications for your source, projector, and cable before choosing. Epson’s HDMI setup instructions and Intel’s HDMI cable guide provide further detail.

- Plug and Play: Instantly turn your laptop’s USB-C port into an HDMI port, with no installation necessary. This product does not support charging or Power Delivery (PD).
- Premium Construction: A lightweight aluminum casing allows for greater heat dissipation, while the reinforced braided-nylon cable is designed to withstand the twists and tugs of daily use.
- Compatibility: Supports USB-C DP Alt mode, USB4, and Thunderbolt connections.
A higher-rated cable does not improve the picture merely by being higher-rated if your current cable already reliably supports the required signal.
USB-C: confirm that the source sends video
USB-C describes the connector, not a guarantee of video output. A source must support video over USB-C—commonly through DisplayPort Alt Mode—for a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable to send a picture to an HDMI projector. ViewSonic’s M1 Gen 2 guide tells users to confirm that their USB-C device supports video transmission; BenQ gives a similar qualification for the GV30 and GV50. These are model-specific examples, so consult the manual for your own device. ViewSonic’s M1 Gen 2 guide, BenQ’s GV30 and GV50 FAQ, and VESA’s DisplayPort over USB-C overview explain the relevant compatibility conditions.

If your source has USB-C and your projector has HDMI, use an adapter or cable that converts in the required direction and supports the signal you need. A USB-C port that only supports charging or data will not send video through such an adapter.

Use a DisplayPort cable when both devices have DisplayPort. If they do not, select an adapter or adapter cable that converts from the source’s output to the projector’s input. DisplayPort guidance covers adapters to HDMI, VGA, and DVI, but the connector and conversion direction must match your devices. Do not force a plug into a port. VESA’s DisplayPort guidance describes these connection options.

- EXTEND YOUR REACH: Going from USB-C male to HDMI female lets you keep using the HDMI cable you already have, and place your laptop or phone where you want it.
For a longer or higher-bandwidth DisplayPort connection, choose a cable rated for the required performance and connector type. VESA describes DP8K-certified cables as designed for high-bandwidth applications and recommends reputable or certified cables. Certification is about reliable signal capability, not a promise of a better-looking image when a suitable cable already works. VESA’s cable guidance provides more information.
VGA, component, and other older connections
Some projectors have VGA, component, or other legacy inputs. Connect matching ports directly when possible. For a mismatch, verify that the adapter performs the needed conversion: VGA is analog video, so it is not interchangeable with digital HDMI through a simple passive cable. Check both manuals for supported resolution, refresh rate, and audio routing; an adapter that carries video may not carry audio. Epson lists VGA and component among possible projector connection types, while DisplayPort documentation discusses adapters to older interfaces. Epson’s connection guide and VESA’s adapter guidance cover these connections.

How cable length changes the choice
For a short direct connection, use a cable that supports the required signal. For a longer run, check the projector and cable manufacturers’ installation guidance and consider a tested active or optical cable if the setup calls for one. Cable performance over distance depends on the cable design and signal, so there is no single length limit that applies to every projector.

SMART Technologies lists 7 m (23 ft) DisplayPort and HDMI recommendations for certain configurations of its own display products. Those figures are product-specific guidance, not universal projector cable limits. SMART’s installation guidance gives its recommendations.
Check these details before buying
- Match the ports: Write down the source output and projector input, including connector type and size.
- Confirm video support: For USB-C, verify that the source supports video output. For an adapter, check its conversion direction and supported formats.
- Check the signal: Compare the resolution and refresh rate you want with the specifications for the source, projector, cable, and adapter.
- Account for audio: HDMI commonly carries audio and video together, but older connections and some adapters may require a separate audio path.
- Measure the route: Choose a practical length and check whether an active or optical cable needs a power connection.
- Follow installation instructions: Use the designated port or setting identified in the manuals, and route the cable without putting strain on the connectors.
If the projector shows no image
- Recheck the input selection: Make sure the projector is set to the input where the cable is connected.
- Verify video output: Confirm that the source is sending video through that port, especially when using USB-C.
- Check adapter direction and capability: A cable that fits can still be the wrong direction or lack the needed conversion.
- Test a shorter connection: If a long run is unstable, try a shorter cable to help isolate a distance or cable issue.
- Revisit the target mode: Check whether every component supports the selected resolution and refresh rate.
- Inspect power requirements: If an active or optical cable requires power, follow its instructions and the projector manual.
What information is needed for an exact recommendation?
There is no reliable one-size-fits-all cable choice without the source and projector models, the signal you want, and the cable distance. With those details, compare the port match, video support, resolution and refresh rate, adapter direction, and any cable power requirement before selecting a cable.
