Project Zomboid Server Settings Not Saving: How to Fix It

Project Zomboid usually ignores edited settings because the server is loading another profile, layer, data directory, or Linux user's files. This guide shows how to identify the active configuration, back it up, apply changes, and verify them without damaging the multiplayer world.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a Project Zomboid dedicated server ignores an edited servertest.ini or restores settings after a restart, the file is usually not the one the running process uses. The common causes are an incorrect server profile, editing the wrong configuration layer, not reloading or restarting after the edit, or running the server as a different Linux user.

Stop the server and back up its profile and save, identify the name passed to -servername, edit the matching INI or _SandboxVars.lua file under the Zomboid data directory, apply the change, and verify it with showoptions and a client. The procedure below also covers persistent world data, Linux account mismatches, and port checks.

Start with the five-minute diagnosis

Do not begin by changing more values. First establish which profile, directory, and file the server is actually using. A dedicated server can have several similarly named files, and the installation directory is not necessarily where the live profile resides.

  1. Identify the launch profile. Find the server’s startup command or service definition and record the value after -servername. That name determines the INI, SandboxVars file, related spawn files, and multiplayer save folder.
  2. Identify the data directory. Check the account running the process, its home directory, and any -cachedir setting. The effective Zomboid directory is the one that matters, not a copy in an installation folder or another user’s home directory.
  3. Classify the setting. Server behavior belongs in NAME.ini; world rules belong in NAME_SandboxVars.lua; already generated world state belongs in the multiplayer save.
  4. Apply it correctly. Stop and restart for a normal maintenance change, or use the administrator command reloadoptions for INI changes while the server is running.
  5. Verify before another edit. Use showoptions, inspect the active file again, and connect one client to test the resulting behavior.
What you observe First check Likely explanation
The password, listing status, port, or mod list does not change The active NAME.ini You may have edited a different server name or a file outside the running data directory.
Loot, zombie speed, time, water shutoff, or PVP is unchanged The active NAME_SandboxVars.lua The value is in the SandboxVars layer, not the INI; existing world content may also already be generated.
Only Linux hosts revert settings Process user, home, -cachedir, and launch service The editor and server may be using different Zomboid folders.
Mods are absent WorkshopItems= and Mods= in the same active INI Both fields must describe the intended mod set.

Where Project Zomboid stores a dedicated server’s configuration

The server name is the profile key

The argument -servername NAME selects a group of files, not merely a display label. A server started with -servername pizza reads pizza.ini, pizza_SandboxVars.lua, the corresponding spawn files, and the multiplayer save named pizza. Editing servertest.ini cannot affect that process unless the process is actually started with -servername servertest.

When no custom name is intended, many installations use servertest as the default. Treat that as a filename convention, not proof that the active profile is servertest; the launch argument is authoritative.

The live files are under the Zomboid data directory

PZwiki lists these Windows defaults:

  • C:UsersYourUsernameZomboidServerservertest.ini
  • C:UsersYourUsernameZomboidServerservertest_SandboxVars.lua
  • C:UsersYourUsernameZomboidServerservertest_spawnpoints.lua
  • C:UsersYourUsernameZomboidServerservertest_spawnregions.lua
  • C:UsersYourUsernameZomboidSavesMultiplayerservertest

Linux uses the analogous ~/Zomboid/Server and ~/Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer locations. Replace servertest with the active server name. If the launch configuration sets -cachedir, use the Zomboid directory selected by that option rather than assuming the process uses the account’s default home.

Three configuration layers behave differently

Layer Typical file or folder Controls Important limitation
Server options NAME.ini Password, public listing, ports, connection options, and mod fields The running process must load this exact profile.
Sandbox and world rules NAME_SandboxVars.lua Loot, zombie speed, time, water shutoff, PVP, and other world rules Editing it later does not necessarily regenerate cells or undo state already created.
Persistent world Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/NAME Existing loot rolls, explored cells, a water system that has already shut off, and other generated state This state can outlive a later option edit.
Spawn metadata NAME_spawnpoints.lua and NAME_spawnregions.lua Spawn locations and region definitions Use the files matching the active server name.

This separation explains many apparent “save” failures. An INI value can be present and correctly loaded while a world rule appears unchanged because the relevant cell or event was already generated in the save.

Safe repair procedure

1. Stop the server and make a complete backup

Use the normal stop command or service control so the server can finish writing data. Do not edit a live file while another process is simultaneously rewriting it unless you are deliberately using reloadoptions for an INI-only change.

Copy the active profile’s INI, SandboxVars file, spawn files, and multiplayer save to a dated backup location. For the default Windows profile, that means the four files under C:UsersYourUsernameZomboidServer and the servertest folder under SavesMultiplayer. On Linux, back up the matching files under ~/Zomboid/Server and the matching save under ~/Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer, adjusted for the effective home or -cachedir.

Keep the original untouched. A backup lets you undo a malformed edit and, more importantly, lets you compare the file the server loaded with the file you intended to change.

2. Confirm the exact launch command

Locate the command used by the service, startup script, container, or manual terminal session. Record:

  • the value after -servername;
  • any -cachedir value;
  • the operating-system account that owns the process; and
  • the working directory or service environment that supplies the Zomboid data path.

Use those values to derive the filenames. If the command says -servername pizza, work on pizza.ini, pizza_SandboxVars.lua, pizza_spawnpoints.lua, pizza_spawnregions.lua, and the pizza multiplayer save. Do not rename files simply to make them resemble servertest; change the launch profile only when you intentionally want a different server.

3. Match the option to its layer

Open the active INI for server-level values. Password, public visibility, ports, and mod declarations belong there. For mods, check both WorkshopItems= and Mods=; populating only one field does not describe the complete intended set.

Open the active SandboxVars file for world-rule values such as loot abundance, zombie speed, in-game time, water shutoff, and PVP. Preserve the Lua structure and change only the relevant value. A setting that controls newly generated content may not alter cells that already exist in the multiplayer save.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not edit the save folder as though it were an INI. It is persistent world state, not a simple list of current options. If the complaint concerns an explored area, previous loot rolls, or an event that has already occurred, changing a SandboxVars value may affect future generation without reversing the existing state.

4. Check ownership and permissions before saving

The account that edits the file must be able to write it, and the account that starts the server must be able to read the same path. A successful save in a text editor proves only that one account wrote one file; it does not prove that the server will load that file.

On a Linux host, compare the account and home directory used by the editor or shell with the account and home directory shown for the server process. Also inspect the launch service for a different -cachedir or environment. If two copies of a profile exist, temporarily add a harmless, recognizable change to the intended file, restart, and then verify which file changed or which value appears in showoptions.

5. Apply the change with the right timing

For a maintenance window, save the file while the server is stopped, then start the server again. This is the least ambiguous method because the process reads the profile from a clean start.

For an INI edit that must go live without a full restart, PZwiki’s dedicated-server documentation states: “Changes can be saved to servertest.ini while the server is running. After servertest.ini is saved, use admin command reloadoptions to make the changes live.” Apply the same idea to the active profile name: a server launched as pizza requires the corresponding pizza.ini. The command is for INI options; it does not promise that already generated world content will be rebuilt.

6. Verify the effective result

After a restart or reload, run the administrator command showoptions. Compare the reported values with the file you edited. Then connect one client and test the behavior that matters: authenticate with the new password, check listing visibility, inspect the mod set, or observe the relevant world rule in a controlled area.

If showoptions reports the old value, stop and return to profile, path, and user checks. If it reports the new value but the world looks unchanged, investigate persistent save state rather than editing the same line repeatedly.

Why Linux servers commonly read a different file

A Linux-specific failure mode is a mismatch between the account used to launch the server and the account whose home directory you edited. A Steam Community support reply warns that launching with sudo can put the settings file in the sudo account, causing the process to read a different servertest.ini. Treat that as a concrete troubleshooting lead, not as proof that every Linux reset has the same cause.

Check the effective context in the same session or service that starts the server:

  • Confirm the process owner with the host’s process or service tools.
  • Confirm that account’s HOME value and the resulting ~/Zomboid path.
  • Inspect the launch arguments for -servername and -cachedir.
  • Open and edit the profile under that account, or change the service so one deliberate account owns both the files and the process.

Do not solve this by copying files randomly between home directories. First establish which directory the running process uses, then keep one authoritative profile and back up the old copy before removing or archiving duplicates.

When a setting is correct but the game still behaves the old way

World generation has already happened

Sandbox variables can govern generation and timed world events. Once cells have been explored, loot has been rolled, or water has already shut off, those results are stored in the multiplayer save. A later edit can be valid and visible in the loaded options while leaving existing areas unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test a world-rule change in a location or situation that can still be affected, rather than using an already explored cell as the only evidence. Keep the save backup until you are certain the new behavior is acceptable; deleting or replacing a save is a destructive world-management decision, not a routine settings fix.

The file is valid but belongs to another profile

Two profiles can contain identical-looking options. Compare the server name in the launch command with every filename and the save-folder name. Profile correctness takes priority over the apparent contents of a file.

The value is in the wrong layer

Changing a port or password in SandboxVars, or changing zombie speed in the INI, cannot produce the intended result because those files serve different purposes. Use the configuration map above, then verify the resulting value with showoptions where the command exposes it.

Mods, ports, and connection symptoms are separate checks

Mod declarations

For a missing mod set, inspect WorkshopItems= and Mods= in the same active INI. Confirm that the entries describe the intended collection and mod identifiers. If the fields are correct in the active profile but a client still lacks a mod, continue with normal mod loading and client-side troubleshooting; do not switch profiles merely because the symptom appears after a restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dedicated-server ports

PZwiki lists UDP 16261 and UDP 16262 as the required dedicated-server ports. Check forwarding and firewall rules independently when clients cannot connect. An open port cannot make the server load the right INI, and a correctly loaded INI cannot compensate for a blocked or misdirected port.

Keep connectivity evidence separate from configuration evidence: use showoptions and file inspection to prove option loading, then test the network path for reachability.

Recovery paths for the most common outcomes

The edited file never changes the reported option

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Re-read the launch command and copy the exact -servername value.
  3. Resolve the effective -cachedir, home directory, and process account.
  4. Back up every duplicate profile before editing.
  5. Change the matching NAME.ini, restart, and run showoptions.

The reported option changes, but existing gameplay does not

  1. Confirm that the value belongs to SandboxVars or world generation rather than a server-level INI option.
  2. Determine whether the affected cell, loot table, or timed event was already generated.
  3. Test an area or event that can still respond to the new rule.
  4. Use the save backup before considering any destructive world reset.

Settings revert only after a Linux restart

  1. Compare the account that edits the file with the account that starts the process.
  2. Check for a sudo-created profile in another home directory.
  3. Inspect service arguments and -cachedir.
  4. Make one account and one data directory authoritative, then restart and verify with showoptions.

A change caused an unexpected result

Stop the server, restore the backed-up file, and start it again. If the world save itself was changed, restore the save only after preserving the current state for diagnosis. This order avoids turning a reversible text-file mistake into permanent loss of world progress.

Final verification checklist

  • The process launch command and the edited filenames use the same -servername.
  • The files are under the effective Zomboid data directory, including any -cachedir location.
  • The server process and the editor use the intended operating-system account.
  • Server options are in NAME.ini, world rules are in NAME_SandboxVars.lua, and persistent state is treated as a separate save.
  • The profile, SandboxVars file, spawn files, and multiplayer save were backed up before editing.
  • The server was restarted, or an INI edit was followed by the administrator command reloadoptions.
  • showoptions and one client test confirm the effective result.
  • UDP 16261 and UDP 16262 are checked separately when the symptom is connection failure.

PZwiki is community-maintained and its dedicated-server page was last modified on December 21, 2025; build-specific behavior can change. A settings-reference page cited for the configuration distinctions was updated September 30, 2026. Use the profile, layer, timing, account, and verification checks above as the durable method, and confirm behavior on the build you are running.
