Why it was called one of 2026’s biggest sci-fi releases
Amazon MGM Studios reported that the film had earned more than $680 million worldwide and more than $343 million in the United States and Canada following its domestic debut on March 20. In its July 3, 2026 update, the studio described it as the year’s third-highest-grossing movie at that point. These are figures and a ranking reported by Amazon, not a live box-office tally, and they do not establish that it is the top-grossing science-fiction film of the year.
What the film is about
Science teacher Ryland Grace wakes up aboard a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there. He discovers that he must investigate a substance causing the sun to die; an unexpected friendship may give him a chance to save Earth.
#1 Best Overall
Ryan Gosling stars as Grace, alongside Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed the film, and Drew Goddard wrote the screenplay.
The film’s source novel
Project Hail Mary adapts Andy Weir’s 2021 novel. Amazon says the audiobook had sold more than 2 million copies by 2026 and reports that it won the Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year in 2022. Amazon’s article also identifies print, Kindle, and Audible editions of the book. These are ways to experience the source story, not additional formats of the film.

Streaming dates and home formats vary from movie to movie. Peacock’s official Disclosure Day page lists an October 9, 2026 streaming start, Steven Spielberg as director, and a 2-hour-25-minute runtime. That is a separate film and does not change the Prime Video availability Amazon reports for Project Hail Mary.
Likewise, Lucasfilm’s home-release announcement for The Mandalorian and Grogu lists digital, Disney+, 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and collector editions for that title. It is not evidence that Project Hail Mary has the same home formats.
