There is no single best programming language for every software tester. Choose the one that fits the work you want to automate, your team’s existing stack, the framework you plan to use, and your current experience. For broad coding foundations and reusable test utilities, Python is a sensible starting point; for Playwright or Cypress web testing, JavaScript or TypeScript is a strong fit. If your team already uses Selenium, start with the language its tests use, often Java or C#.
Which programming language should a software tester learn?
Start with the test work you want to do rather than a popularity ranking. Playwright advises choosing a language based on your experience, familiarity with its testing ecosystem, and project constraints. Its core browser-automation features are available across supported languages, but the runner and framework integrations differ. Playwright’s supported-languages documentation lays out those routes.
Use these four questions to narrow your choice:
- What language does your team use? Existing test suites are usually the most practical place to learn and contribute.
- What are you testing? Browser-based web testing points toward a framework such as Playwright or Cypress; tests and utilities that are not tied to one tool can benefit from a general-purpose language.
- Which framework and runner will you use? Check that the language has an integration suited to the project.
- What do you want to learn first? Broad programming fundamentals and immediate practice with a particular browser-testing tool are both valid goals.
How the main language choices compare
| Language | Good fit when | Documented testing routes |
|---|---|---|
| Python | You want general coding foundations, reusable utilities, or tests beyond one specific tool. | Playwright recommends its Pytest plugin for Python end-to-end tests. AT*SQA also describes Python as useful for tool-independent tests and a possible beginner starting point. |
| JavaScript or TypeScript | Your immediate goal is browser-facing web testing with Playwright or Cypress. | Playwright for Node.js has its own test runner. AT*SQA pairs JavaScript with Playwright and Cypress. |
| Java | Your organization already uses Java automation, or you want to use Playwright with a Java test framework. | AT*SQA lists Java with Selenium WebDriver and JUnit; Playwright documents JUnit and TestNG integrations. |
| C# / .NET | Your team uses C# with Selenium or plans to write Playwright tests in .NET. | AT*SQA lists C# with Selenium WebDriver. Playwright documents MSTest, NUnit, xUnit, and xUnit v3 integrations. |
These are documented examples, not an exhaustive list of languages that can be used for testing. The language alone does not establish which tester will be most effective.
What each language offers in practice
Python for foundations and reusable utilities
Python is a reasonable independent starting point if your goal is to learn general coding concepts and build utilities or tests that are not locked to one testing tool. For Playwright end-to-end work in Python, the project recommends its Pytest plugin. Calling Python the best or easiest language for every beginner would go beyond the available guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
JavaScript or TypeScript for browser-focused web testing
If you want to work with Playwright or Cypress on web applications, JavaScript or TypeScript connects directly to that ecosystem. Playwright’s Node.js version includes its own runner, with parallelization, screenshot assertions, an HTML reporter, and tracing. This makes the Node.js route distinct from Playwright’s integrations for other languages.
Java and C# / .NET for established team stacks
Where an organization already has Java-based Selenium tests, learning Java helps you work in that stack; similarly, C# fits a team using Selenium with .NET. Playwright supports both ecosystems too: Java projects can use JUnit or TestNG, while .NET projects have integrations for MSTest, NUnit, xUnit, and xUnit v3.

Choosing a first language when you are new to testing
If you are learning independently, pick the route that connects most directly to something you can practice:
- Choose Python if your priority is broad programming fundamentals, reusable utilities, or a Pytest-based Playwright route.
- Choose JavaScript or TypeScript if your near-term goal is browser automation with Playwright or Cypress.
- Choose Java or C# if a specific job, team, course, or existing test suite gives you a concrete reason to use that language.
AT*SQA’s Test Automation Transitions Micro-Credential guidance points learners toward both JavaScript and Python in different contexts: it suggests JavaScript for self-study partly because of Playwright, while also describing Python as an approachable possible starting point. Those recommendations are compatible when the goal and practice environment differ. AT*SQA’s “Gaining Coding Skills” material also advises considering experience, testing type, tool integration, and organizational needs.

What if your team already uses Selenium?
Begin with the language used by the team’s existing Selenium tests, rather than switching languages solely because another one is popular online. AT*SQA lists Java with Selenium WebDriver and JUnit and C# with Selenium WebDriver; it also notes that Python and Ruby can be used with Selenium WebDriver. The team’s established language is a practical default, not a claim that other languages cannot work.
Do software testers need a programming-language popularity ranking?
No current, representative ranking of programming languages among software testers is established by the sources cited here. The ISTQB Worldwide Software Testing Practices Survey covered more than 2,000 responses from 92 countries in 2017–18, but its published summary does not rank tester languages. That historical survey should not be treated as a current measure of workforce preferences or job demand. ISTQB’s 2017–18 survey page describes its scope and findings.

Learn testing concepts alongside syntax
A language is one part of test automation. If you want a structured next step, ISTQB says its Foundation Level certification provides practical knowledge of fundamental testing concepts. Its Test Automation Engineering specialist content covers the design, development, and maintenance of test-automation solutions, dynamic functional test automation, and automation’s relationship to test management and software-development processes. Certification is an optional learning route, not a prerequisite for learning a language or working in testing. See ISTQB’s overview of its work and its certification information and resource access.
