Crypto exchange APIs let software read market data, manage accounts, and submit orders; proof-of-reserves (PoR) systems offer a way to check whether specified customer-balance data appears in a published liability set and compare reported liabilities with disclosed on-chain assets. Neither API access nor a cryptographic inclusion proof establishes that an exchange is solvent in the full balance-sheet sense. For developers, the practical approach is to integrate against the exact product and region documentation, then evaluate each PoR report by its scope, snapshot time, and verifiable evidence.
What an exchange API can—and cannot—tell you
An exchange API is a documented interface to particular exchange services. Depending on the product, it may expose market data, account information, or trading operations. The exact endpoints, authentication, rate limits, and available test environments vary by product and region; a configuration that works for one endpoint or region should not be assumed to work for another.

Binance lists REST, WebSocket APIs and streams, FIX, and SBE among its interface families. It says interface choice involves latency, throughput, operational-complexity, and client-design tradeoffs, and advises developers to consult endpoint-specific rate limits and reliability guidance. OKX documents REST and WebSocket APIs, calls out regional domain requirements and private-request authentication, and notes that some trading limits are shared across REST and WebSocket. Consult the current Binance Developer Documentation and OKX API guide for the product and region you actually use; do not transfer a domain, signing method, or numeric limit from one API context to another.

Choosing an interface
| Interface | What to evaluate | Documentation context |
|---|---|---|
| REST | Endpoint behavior, authentication, request limits, and reliability guidance. | Documented by Binance and OKX; details are product- and endpoint-specific. |
| WebSocket | Stream behavior, reconnection and sequence or integrity handling where specified, and any limits shared with REST. | Documented by Binance and OKX; some OKX trading limits are shared across REST and WebSocket. |
| FIX | Whether its latency, throughput, operational complexity, and client requirements fit the integration. | Listed as an interface family by Binance; check the relevant product documentation. |
| SBE | Whether its client and operational requirements suit the integration. | Listed as an interface family by Binance; check the relevant product documentation. |
These are not interchangeable protocols with universal performance guarantees. Binance’s documentation frames the choice as a set of tradeoffs, not as a single best interface for every client or use case.

API integration checklist
Use the exchange’s current official documentation as the configuration authority. A safe integration process is product-specific rather than a copied set of universal settings.
- Identify the product. Establish whether the integration concerns spot, derivatives, account functions, or market data, and select the matching documentation.
- Select a documented interface. Compare the required operations and operational tradeoffs against the exchange’s published interface guidance.
- Confirm region and API domain. Use the regional domain and product environment documented for the account. OKX specifically calls out regional domain requirements.
- Limit and protect credentials. Scope API-key permissions to the operations the integration needs and protect the key material. Follow the exchange’s instructions for authentication and private requests.
- Implement documented signing and time handling. Match the exchange’s signing scheme and any documented clock requirements; do not infer a signing method from another exchange or endpoint.
- Respect limits and reliability guidance. Handle endpoint-specific rate limits and relevant response information. Where REST and WebSocket limits are shared, account for both interfaces using the exchange’s current documentation.
- Build for stream interruptions. For WebSocket integrations, implement the reconnection and sequence or integrity behavior the exchange specifies.
- Test before production. Use a supported testnet or demo environment when one is available for the product. Environments vary, so confirm support in the relevant product documentation.
How proof of reserves works
A Merkle tree organizes a set of records into a structure that can be summarized by a root value. A user can receive a proof that a particular record is included under that root without needing to treat the root itself as a full publication of every record. In an exchange PoR context, records may represent user balances or liabilities.

Binance describes a process in which users retrieve a Merkle leaf and record ID to verify account inclusion. It says its system also uses zk-SNARK constraints to check that user-balance sets contribute to total net account balances, that net account balances are nonnegative, and that a root update is valid. These are Binance’s descriptions of its own system, not independent conclusions about every aspect of the exchange’s balance sheet. Binance describes the root this way: “The Merkle Root is a cryptographic seal that summarizes all of the inputted data.” See its Proof of Reserves page.

OKX describes taking a snapshot of user balances, placing them in a trace table and encrypted Merkle tree, publishing verification materials, and using zk-STARK proofs. Its published method calls for comparing assets in on-chain wallets with total account assets represented by the Merkle root. OKX states: “The report is a snapshot of our OKX account asset balances at the time of the data capture.” Its Proof of Reserves page and the open-source verification utilities describe parts of that workflow, including checks of wallet address ownership and balances at a snapshot block height.

How to verify your own inclusion and assess a report
The following sequence adapts the steps published by exchanges into a cautious reader workflow. It is not a claim that the author has run a verification.
- Read the report’s boundary first. Record the snapshot date and time, assets and accounts in scope, proof mechanism, and any stated exclusions. An inclusion proof is meaningful only in relation to the particular report and root it verifies.
- Obtain your own proof material. Retrieve the personal leaf or other account proof through the exchange’s official account interface. Treat the exchange’s official instructions as authoritative for the required file format and verifier.
- Validate inclusion. Use the exchange’s verifier or, if you have the expertise, inspect the published proof code and format and verify the proof independently. Confirm which root and snapshot the result corresponds to.
- Check disclosed wallet evidence. Where the exchange documents a method, verify that it controls the disclosed wallet addresses, for example through a signed message. Then check the balances at the stated chain height. OKX’s repository provides utilities for portions of these checks.
- Compare like with like. Compare the in-scope on-chain assets with aggregate liabilities for the same snapshot. Keep asset units and coverage aligned; totals from different dates or scopes do not form a meaningful comparison.
- Write down what the result leaves out. Note uncovered products, liabilities, assets, or later activity rather than treating a successful proof as a statement about them.
What a PoR proof establishes—and what it does not
A valid inclusion proof establishes that the supplied record is included under a particular cryptographic root, assuming the proof and verifier are correctly implemented and the root is the one identified by the report. Additional proof constraints may support specific statements about the published dataset. The exact statements depend on the exchange’s method and must be read from its documentation.

That result alone does not demonstrate that the exchange supplied every liability, that disclosed assets are free of encumbrances, or that every relevant debt is covered. Those limits follow from what a bounded, point-in-time proof can show: verifying a record inside a dataset cannot by itself show that the dataset contains every relevant record. Likewise, a disclosed wallet balance at a snapshot does not establish that the assets were unencumbered or remained under the exchange’s control afterward. These are methodological boundaries, not findings that any named exchange has omitted liabilities.

PoR is therefore evidence about stated assets and liabilities at a stated time, not a complete solvency opinion. Evaluate scope, timing, independent examination, product coverage, wallet-control evidence, and how the liability set was constructed. A report with strong cryptographic verification can still have a boundary defined by the data and assets it includes.

Examples of scope and timing in published reports
Published programs and reporting cadence change. These examples illustrate why a report’s date and stated scope matter; they are not directly equivalent audits.
| Publication | Date and stated coverage | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| OKX PoR page | The page displayed “Sep 2026,” labeled the report 47th, and showed $27.4 billion in primary assets. | This is an exchange-published figure associated with the page’s September 2026 label, not an independently established industry statistic. Check the live report and its underlying snapshot date before relying on the amount. |
| Kraken PoR announcement | Kraken’s July 30, 2025 announcement says its audit was finalized as of June 30, 2025, covering BTC, ETH, SOL, USDC, USDT, XRP, and ADA across spot, margin, futures, and staked holdings. | These are Kraken’s descriptions of a historical audit and its scope, not a statement about later reports. See Kraken’s announcement. |
| Bybit PoR report by Hacken | The October 22, 2025 report describes code review and Merkle validation of the liability report. | Hacken says its findings strongly indicate that the liabilities report accurately represents underlying client balances, while acknowledging that absolute certainty is rarely attainable. That qualification is part of the report’s conclusion, not proof of complete balance-sheet solvency. Read the Hacken report for Bybit. |
| Deribit publication policy | On August 27, 2026, Deribit announced that its daily PoR page would be discontinued from September 1, 2026, while independent PoR audits would continue twice a year. | This is a date-specific policy announcement. Check the Deribit update for its stated approach and current status. |
A practical standard for evaluating “solvency” claims
When an exchange or commentator uses PoR as evidence of solvency, separate the evidence into distinct questions instead of treating the word as a single technical result:
- Liability representation: What customer balances or exposures are included, and what evidence shows that the published set represents them?
- Asset scope: Which on-chain assets and wallets count toward the comparison, and how was control of those wallets demonstrated?
- Coverage: Which products, customer exposures, and asset types are covered, and which are outside the stated scope?
- Timing: What precise snapshot date, time, or chain height does the proof use, and how far is it from the date on which you are making a decision?
- Examination: Who reviewed the method or report, what work did that reviewer describe, and what qualifications did the reviewer make?
A positive answer to one question does not automatically answer the others. A cryptographic root can make a defined dataset auditable; it cannot, by itself, make the dataset exhaustive or turn a snapshot into a continuing guarantee.
