Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe author websites worth copying in 2026 do three things well. They make the author’s genre clear within seconds, they put the main offer (a book, a catalog, or a service) where a visitor can see it without scrolling past unrelated material, and they give the visitor one easy way to stay in touch. Recent roundups from BookBub, Site Builder Report, and Shopify show these patterns in different forms. None of them measures whether a layout sells more books than another, so read each example below as a reviewer’s design observation, not a proven result.
Decide what the site is for before you compare designs
Most author sites fall into one of three types, and each has different navigation needs. Pick the type that matches your work first, then judge the examples against it.

- One-book site. A debut novel, a standalone nonfiction title, or a single series. The book’s cover, description, and purchase route should be the first thing a visitor meets.
- Backlist catalog. An author with many titles. The latest release and a complete, navigable list of the rest carry the most weight.
- Multi-output author platform. An author who also runs a podcast, blog, video channel, games, or courses. The site has to decide which offer leads, or visitors will not know where to start.
Genre-forward fiction sites
BookBub’s roundup of author website examples covers romance subgenres, fantasy and science fiction, mystery, thriller, and horror. Its notes describe sites that use covers, logos, color, illustration, and header imagery to signal tone before a visitor reads any copy. The examples it highlights include Michelle Rowen’s paranormal romance site, A. K. Steel’s coordinated cover carousel, Hester Fox’s historical fantasy page built around the book, and Diane Vallere’s mystery site with a distinctive logo and cohesive colors.
When you study these pages, separate the signals a visitor reads at a glance: palette, typography, the author logo, illustration style, and the overall mood of the header. A reader who understands the genre from the first screen is more likely to keep reading. BookBub also advises keeping each section focused, so that books, biography, and email collection each have a clear job rather than competing for attention.

Book-first and single-title sites
Site Builder Report describes Christy Anne Jones’s homepage as a large book image, a short description, and one clear action, with colors and fonts that match the covers. Its roundup also includes a focused nonfiction example that offers two different signup incentives under a headline that describes a reader outcome. Shopify’s author example, which its guide credits to Julie Broad, places the primary book order action in the top banner and pairs the author portrait and core value proposition with media mentions.
These pages share a useful test: can a visitor tell what the book offers and how to get it without leaving the page or searching through unrelated content? Reviewers judged these examples on that clarity. They did not establish that the layouts increase sales.
Backlist and multi-output platforms
Large backlists
Site Builder Report describes Malcolm Gladwell’s site as placing the latest title and its buy link first, followed by a brief bio and the back catalogue. The reviewer notes that offering both book and audiobook options serves readers with different preferences. For an author with many titles, the lesson is to lead with the newest release, then make the older titles easy to browse, rather than trying to give every book equal billing on the homepage.

Multi-output brands
Site Builder Report’s example of Tim Ferriss shows a broad media brand with books, a podcast, video, a blog, a card game, and a newsletter. The reviewer reads the newsletter signup and a free chapter offer as the site’s clearest lead-generation focus, while warning that so many outputs can make the hierarchy hard to follow. If your site spans several activities, choose one lead action and let the others sit below it.
Comparing the examples side by side
The table compares the examples on the axes that matter most: genre signaling, how visible the primary offer is, and which next action the reviewer highlighted. “Not stated” means the source did not describe that element; it does not mean the element is absent from the live site.

Checking your own site against these patterns
Work through these checks in order, using a phone and a desktop browser.
- Run the five-second test. Open the homepage, look away, and then look back. If a stranger cannot name your genre and what you publish, adjust the header image, logo, or palette before you change anything else.
- Find the primary offer on the first screen. Confirm that the featured book, catalog, or service appears without a long scroll and that its purchase or booking route is one step away. If a visitor must scroll several sections to find a buy link, move the link up.
- Give the next action one clear label. Choose the lead action (buy, read a sample, join the list, or contact you) and make it the most prominent button or link. Where the reviewers praised a single clear action, that choice was deliberate.
- Test the signup route. Count the clicks from the homepage to the signup form. Remove any step that adds no value, and give the form a visible label and a reason to subscribe, such as a free chapter.
- Check every control on a phone. Covers, body text, navigation, and signup forms should all work on a small screen. Unlabeled icons and controls were a recurring complaint in the reviewed critiques, so label anything a visitor has to interpret.
- Match the catalog to the site type. A one-book site needs no catalog grid. A backlist needs a browsable list with the newest title first. A multi-output platform needs one lead action that the other offers support.
What these examples can and cannot tell you
The three sources are roundups and service pages. They describe layouts and offer critiques, but they do not publish conversion rates, controlled tests, or comparable analytics for the sites they show. Treat the words “convert” in any example title as a goal the layout is designed to support, not a measured result. Avoid repeating traffic or conversion figures that appear in search snippets without a source, because none of the reviewed pages supports them.

Builders and cost trade-offs
BookBub’s examples page says its 20 examples are real sites built with Author Websites by BookBub, and that the builder offers a free plan and a 14-day Pro trial. Those terms were listed on the page when it was reviewed in July 2026, so confirm current pricing and plan contents before you commit. Tertulia presents its author website builder as a way to sell books directly and grow an audience, and its case-study index covers backlist management, direct sales, websites, and newsletters.
The patterns in this article depend on layout decisions, not on any single platform. Before choosing a builder, check that its plan lets you feature a book prominently, label your signup form, and link to purchase pages. Newsletter tools are a separate decision; the reviewed sources do not name a recommended provider, so compare current features and pricing on each provider’s own site.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a paid author website worth it compared with a free builder?
The reviewed sources do not measure this. The features that matter most in the examples, such as a visible book, a labeled signup form, a browsable catalog, and mobile-friendly controls, depend on how you build the pages. Before paying, confirm that the plan you need includes those features, and check whether the free tier limits custom sections or form options.
Should a debut author copy a large backlist layout?
Usually not. A debut with one title is better served by a one-book structure, with the cover, a short description, and one clear action on the homepage. A full catalog grid adds navigation that a single book does not need, and it can push the offer further down the page.
