Processing-in-memory (PIM) is a computer architecture that places some computation inside or close to the memory holding data. Instead of sending every piece of a large dataset to a separate processor, a PIM system aims to do selected work near the data, reducing data movement. It can help with suitable workloads, but it is not a universal speedup or a setting available on every computer.
What processing in memory means
Memory stores the data a computer is working with. In a conventional processor-centric design, the CPU or an accelerator retrieves data from memory, performs operations, and may write the results back. When a task involves large datasets, moving the data can consume time, energy, and memory bandwidth.

PIM changes where some computation happens: it brings computation to data in or near memory. IBM’s 2019 article, “Processing-in-memory: A workload-driven perspective”, describes PIM as a paradigm that avoids much of the cost of data movement by bringing computation to the data. The goal is to reduce unnecessary transfers, not to eliminate all communication between memory and processors.

It does not simply mean putting a CPU and RAM on one chip: computation may be placed within memory devices, in nearby logic, or in other parts of the memory system.

Two broad ways to implement PIM
Processing-using-memory
Processing-using-memory (PUM) uses characteristics or operations of the memory device itself to carry out selected computations in situ—that is, where the data resides. The operations it can perform depend on the memory technology and design.
Processing-near-memory
Processing-near-memory (PNM) places compute logic close to memory circuitry rather than necessarily inside memory cells. One example is a logic layer associated with 3D-stacked memory; other designs may put compute resources close to a memory controller. The intent is to keep data transfers local for suitable operations.

These are broad design families, not consumer settings. Hardware, software, and system components must work together to direct appropriate tasks to the PIM resources. An academic survey, “A Modern Primer on Processing in Memory” (2020), discusses both approaches as well as programming, compiler, and system-integration challenges.
Why reduce data movement?
Processors can perform calculations quickly, but large workloads may spend substantial resources moving data between memory and compute units. PIM aims to reduce that cost by performing some work near the data. Whether it helps depends on the task, the available PIM hardware, and how effectively software can use it.

Research has explored potential applications in data analytics, machine learning, and genome analysis. These are examples of workload areas, not a promise that every PIM implementation supports or accelerates them. A task may not map well to a particular design, and the cost of adapting software or integrating a system can outweigh the benefit. There is no single performance percentage that applies to PIM in general; meaningful results need to be tied to a specific workload, implementation, and comparison baseline.
How PIM differs from in-memory database processing
The phrases can sound interchangeable, but they describe different design choices:

| Term | What it describes | Where computation happens |
|---|---|---|
| Processing-in-memory architecture | Compute capability is added within or close to memory so selected operations can run near data. | In memory hardware or nearby logic. |
| In-memory database processing | A database keeps useful data or indexes in RAM to reduce reliance on disk access during processing. | Typically on the system’s processors; the data is held in RAM. |
For example, Microsoft’s Azure SQL documentation on in-memory technologies explains that in-memory columnstore processing keeps data needed for processing in memory, while data that does not fit remains on disk. Having database data in RAM does not by itself mean computation circuitry has been embedded in memory.
What PIM does—and does not—promise
- It targets data movement. Its central idea is to perform selected operations closer to where data is stored.
- It is workload-dependent. Benefits depend on whether a task can use the available PIM resources and whether reduced movement outweighs other costs.
- It needs software support. Programming models, compilers, runtimes, and system integration affect whether an application can use the hardware.
- It is not synonymous with more RAM. Adding memory capacity or keeping data in RAM is not, on its own, PIM.
- It is not a universal feature of ordinary computers. PIM describes an evolving architecture, not a capability that can be assumed in every PC or server.
A related line of work applies computation near storage-class memory. Research has considered tasks such as compression, encryption, and format conversion in or near storage. This is part of the broader idea of near-data processing, but not every such storage design is the same as PIM.
