Upstream Node.js builds enable SQLite’s FTS5 extension, but that does not guarantee FTS5 is available in every Node.js executable or deployment. Test the capability in the runtime your application actually uses. If the probe confirms FTS5 is unavailable, a parameterized LIKE query can provide basic substring search—but it is not equivalent to full-text search.
Why you should probe the runtime
node:sqlite provides Node.js APIs for working with SQLite databases; FTS5 availability depends on the SQLite library in the runtime build. The Node.js upstream SQLite configuration defines SQLITE_ENABLE_FTS5, which is evidence about upstream bundled builds, not every third-party distribution, custom build, or environment that uses a shared SQLite library. The Node.js API reference also marks node:sqlite as release-candidate stability in the documentation cited here. Check the current Node.js SQLite API documentation for the status and API details applicable to your release.

No geography-specific difference is established by the official sources cited here, and they do not provide a complete compatibility matrix for every Node.js release line, operating system, downstream distribution, or shared-library configuration. For deployment decisions, test the executable that will run the application rather than assuming support from the upstream build setting.

How can I tell whether FTS5 is available in node:sqlite?
PRAGMA compile_options can provide diagnostic context about SQLite build options. SQLite’s documentation says the pragma “can be used to determine which of the options below are used to build SQLite.” However, a minimal attempt to create an FTS5 virtual table directly checks whether the needed operation works in the connected runtime.

function supportsFts5(db) {
try {
db.exec('CREATE VIRTUAL TABLE temp.__fts5_probe USING fts5(content)');
db.exec('DROP TABLE temp.__fts5_probe');
return true;
} catch (error) {
if (/no such module|fts5/i.test(String(error?.message))) return false;
throw error;
}
}
This is an implementation pattern, not a guaranteed error-message contract: SQLite versions and builds may report failures differently. Adapt transaction handling to your connection and migration design. Ensure probe objects are cleaned up even if creation or subsequent work fails, and cache the result rather than probing on every request. Catch errors specifically around FTS5 creation; permissions problems, malformed SQL, and unrelated database failures should not be mislabeled as lack of FTS5 support.

What changes if you use a LIKE fallback?
A fallback can query text stored in ordinary table columns using bound parameters. For example, Node’s database API supports prepared statements and parameter binding; search only the columns your product intends to expose.

const pattern = `%${escapedTerm}%`;
const statement = db.prepare(
'SELECT id, title FROM documents WHERE title LIKE ? OR body LIKE ?'
);
const rows = statement.all(pattern, pattern);
This illustrates parameter binding, but a production implementation should define how users’ input is escaped for SQL LIKE wildcards. Binding prevents the term from being treated as SQL syntax; it does not by itself make the percent sign (%) and underscore (_) literal characters in a pattern. Choose and document a wildcard policy, and escape those characters when the intended behavior is literal substring matching.
Rank #3
| Dimension | FTS5 | LIKE fallback |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Depends on whether the deployed SQLite runtime supports the FTS5 module. | Uses ordinary SQLite table queries; still verify behavior in the deployed runtime. |
| Matching semantics | Full-text queries use FTS5’s tokenization and query behavior. | Substring matching against selected stored columns; not token-based full-text search. |
| Ranking | Offers full-text ranking and relevance controls. | Does not provide equivalent FTS5 ranking. |
| Index upkeep | Requires keeping an FTS index aligned with its content source. | Queries ordinary stored text; no separate FTS index is required. |
| Deployment trade-off | Richer indexed search, subject to runtime capability and index-maintenance needs. | Simpler search path with reduced query and relevance semantics. |
Keep the fallback’s result shape stable if callers rely on it, but do not imply that its matching, stemming, or ordering will behave like FTS5. SQLite’s FTS5 documentation describes its query and index features; the Node.js SQLite API reference documents prepared statements and parameter binding.

If you use an external-content FTS5 table, the application must keep the index synchronized with the underlying content. SQLite warns that inconsistencies between external content and the index can lead to surprising query behavior. Synchronization triggers or equivalent application update logic are part of the design, not optional cleanup.

- Check consistency: FTS5’s
integrity-checkcommand checks internal index consistency. For an external-content table, userank=1to compare the index with the external content table. - Rebuild after a recoverable mismatch: FTS5’s
rebuildcommand deletes and reconstructs the index from the table or content source. - Preserve ongoing synchronization: Rebuilding does not replace the triggers or application logic needed to keep later inserts, updates, and deletes aligned.
Consult the FTS5 documentation for the exact command syntax and behavior for your table configuration.
