Search-result removal and hash-based tools can help, but neither guarantees that every copy disappears. This guide focuses on intimate or sexual images; a general account or device compromise needs separate account-security steps.
What to do first
- Check your safety. If someone is threatening physical harm, stalking, or coercing you, contact local emergency services or authorities. Ask a trusted person to help with the reporting process if it feels difficult to handle alone.
- Record where the image appears. Note each page or post URL, the site or platform, any visible account name, when you found it, and any report reference number. Google also recommends recording where pictures were found when requesting removal. Do not create extra copies of explicit images, particularly if the person depicted was under 18.
- Report the post to the host. Use the post’s report option or the platform’s help center. State that the intimate image is posted without consent and provide its exact URL. Reporting processes vary by service.
- Request search-result removal separately. A search engine can remove a result without deleting the file from the original site. Contact the host as well.
Consent to taking or privately sharing an image is not consent to distribute it publicly. The person depicted is not to blame for someone else’s decision to share it.

Report it to the site hosting the image
Start with the service where the image is posted. If there is no accessible report button, look for the service’s help center or abuse-reporting process. Keep your incident log and save any confirmation or reference number you receive.
In the United States, the FTC says the Take It Down Act requires covered platforms to provide a way to request removal and to remove the reported image and known identical copies within 48 hours of a valid request. This is a U.S. legal requirement for covered platforms—not a worldwide guarantee, and not a promise that all copies across the internet will be found. If a covered platform’s reporting process is missing or broken, or it does not meet the deadline, the FTC says to report it at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. Remove search results as well as the hosted post
Search-result removal and removal from the hosting site are different requests. Google says a qualifying result may disappear from Search while the image remains accessible at its original URL or on other sites. Ask the host to remove the post, and submit a separate request to Google if its criteria apply.
Google’s stated criteria for personal sexual imagery include that it shows you nude, in a sexual act, or in an intimate state; it was made available without your consent; and you are not being paid to commercialize it. Its personal-content policies apply globally, though legal remedies differ by location. Read Google’s information about removing personal sexual content from Search and use its removal request form.

Use a hash tool to help limit matching copies
Hash-based services can help participating platforms detect matching copies, but they do not replace reporting the original post and cannot promise removal everywhere.

If someone is threatening to share images unless you pay
Do not pay, send more images, provide access to financial accounts or devices, or keep engaging with the person. Block and report the account, tell someone you trust, and report the threat to local criminal law enforcement. In the United States, the FTC also advises reporting it to the FBI; if a minor is involved, report it to NCMEC’s CyberTipline.
If the person depicted was under 18
If it is safe to do so, involve a parent, guardian, or another trusted adult. Report the material to law enforcement and NCMEC’s CyberTipline, and use the platform’s reporting process and Take It Down. Do not download, forward, or re-upload the material. The FTC’s child-specific guidance lists NCMEC’s CyberTipline and 1-800-THE-LOST for help.

In the United States, the FTC lists the National Domestic Violence Hotline: call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), text START to 88788, or use its live chat. Google’s guidance also points to StopNCII and country-specific organizations. Outside the United States, contact local victim-support organizations and seek advice on remedies available where you live.
