A private Git repository can work well for notes if you want readable files and a record of changes—and are willing to commit, push, and pull them deliberately. It is not automatic sync, live collaboration, or proof that a hosting provider cannot access your notes. Obsidian offers a documented example of this approach, but the same questions apply to any notes app that stores content as ordinary files.
What you are storing in a Git-based notes setup
In Obsidian, a vault is a folder of Markdown-formatted text files. Obsidian says those files can also be managed with other text editors and file managers. Git can track changes to them, keep a history, and transfer committed changes to a remote repository hosted on a service such as GitHub, GitLab, or a self-hosted server.

This file-based setup can make notes easier to inspect and move than content held only in a notebook app’s internal format. However, app-specific features may not transfer cleanly to another editor. Check how your own app stores notes and what happens to its special features before adopting the same approach.
How the Git sync routine works
In Obsidian’s documented Git workflow, changes move through commits and a remote repository. Git itself does not continuously synchronize your devices: the documented routine requires you to transfer changes deliberately.

- On the device where you edit: save your notes, review the changes, commit them, and push the commit to the remote repository.
- On another device: pull the remote changes before continuing work, then edit and commit your own changes and push them when ready.
- On the first device again: pull before editing so it receives changes made elsewhere.
Obsidian’s Git guidance describes desktop workflows and an iOS route using the Working Copy Git client. Mobile support depends on the device and chosen setup, so confirm that your app, client, and workflow are supported for your platform. Obsidian also warns against combining sync services on one vault; using multiple synchronization systems can cause conflicts or corruption.
What a private repository does—and does not—mean
Private repository visibility limits who can see the repository according to the host’s access settings. It does not, by itself, establish end-to-end encryption or prove that the hosting provider cannot access the stored notes. A third-party remote is still an externally hosted copy.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Before placing sensitive material there, check the specific provider’s current security and encryption terms, access controls, retention policies, account recovery process, and applicable jurisdiction. These details vary by host and configuration; “private” is not a substitute for checking them.

Git versus a managed notebook or sync service
| Question | Git remote workflow | Managed notebook or sync service |
|---|---|---|
| How do changes move? | In the documented Obsidian flow, commit and push on one device, then pull on another. | Designed to synchronize devices through the service; exact behavior varies by product. |
| Can you review changes? | Git is built around version history and comparing changes. | Check whether the app provides history and how long it retains it. |
| Can you access the files outside the app? | Obsidian vault content is Markdown in a local folder and can be edited elsewhere. | It depends on the app’s storage and export formats. |
| How much routine work is involved? | Requires Git familiarity or a suitable client or plugin, plus deliberate commits and pulls in the documented setup. | Usually designed to reduce day-to-day sync work, though behavior and conflict handling vary. |
| Does syncing provide a backup? | No. A remote copy and history may help recovery, but they do not replace an independent backup. | No. Check recovery and version-history features, and keep a separate backup. |
What happens if you edit on two devices?
If you make changes on one device and then edit an older copy on another without pulling first, the two versions can diverge. Git is designed to reconcile changes, but that process is not the same as live co-editing; overlapping edits may require you to resolve a conflict. Avoid editing the same note simultaneously on multiple devices unless you understand how your chosen client or plugin handles conflicts.

- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Also decide which app files belong in the repository. Obsidian’s guidance discusses excluding the .obsidian folder when you want settings handled separately. Treat caches, plugins, temporary files, and device-specific settings according to your app and workflow rather than adding every file by default.
Why Git history is not a complete backup
Version history can help you recover an earlier version of a tracked file, and a remote repository gives you another copy. Neither guarantees recovery from every kind of loss, such as a damaged account, an inaccessible host, or files that were never committed. Obsidian Help puts the distinction plainly: “Syncing keeps your notes updated, but it doesn’t protect against data loss.”

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Use an independent backup strategy as well as Git, and test that you can restore notes from it. Choose a recovery copy that is separate from the devices and synchronization path you rely on day to day.

- Git is a better fit if readable local files, portability, and inspectable change history matter enough to justify a deliberate commit-and-pull routine.
- A managed sync service is a better fit if you prioritize effortless updates across devices and do not want to manage Git. Review its privacy, export, history, and recovery terms before relying on it.
- Either approach needs a separate backup if the notes matter and you want a way to recover from data loss.
Obsidian is a useful documented example, not a claim that every notebook app works this way. For another app, first verify that your notes are stored in files Git can track and that its own sync and backup guidance supports the workflow you plan to use.
