Private Cloud Storage: 4 Google Drive Alternatives and Their Trade-Offs

The most useful privacy comparison starts with who can decrypt your files. See how four Google Drive alternatives differ in encryption scope, collaboration, and control.

If you want a cloud provider to have less ability to read your files, focus on who holds the decryption keys—not just whether a service encrypts data in transit or at rest. Proton Drive, Sync.com, and Tresorit describe their services as end-to-end encrypted; Nextcloud offers more control over deployment but requires setup and administration. This comparison selects four options for their different privacy models and explains what each model does—and does not—cover.

What to check before choosing private cloud storage

Encryption protects files only in ways determined by where encryption happens and who can access the keys. With end-to-end encryption, files are encrypted on the user’s device before upload, and the provider says it cannot decrypt their contents. Encryption at rest or in transit alone does not establish that the provider cannot read stored files.

  • Scope: Does end-to-end encryption cover the whole library or only specific folders?
  • Key custody: Are keys kept on the user’s devices, or can the provider access them?
  • Sharing: Can you share files and collaborate in the way your work requires?
  • Deployment: Do you want a hosted service, or are you willing to choose and administer your own server?

Vendor security pages describe their providers’ designs and claims. They are not, by themselves, independent verification or a guarantee against every attack. The available information here does not establish like-for-like performance, current prices, storage quotas, independent audit status, or country-specific data residency across these services.

Four Google Drive alternatives, compared

Service Privacy model described by its source Best fit Key trade-off
Proton Drive Provider-described end-to-end encryption for files People seeking hosted storage with provider-described encryption across their files Feature parity, plan prices, and independent audit status are not established here
Sync.com Provider-described end-to-end encryption and zero-knowledge authentication People who also want backup, syncing, and file recovery features Storage and feature limits depend on the plan and should be checked
Tresorit Provider-described zero-knowledge, end-to-end encryption Individuals or organizations that need storage, syncing, sharing, and collaboration General vendor claims do not establish suitability for a particular compliance obligation
Nextcloud Self-hosted or chosen-host deployment; client-side end-to-end encryption is available for selected folders People who want control over deployment and storage backend and can manage the system Hosting, configuration, updates, and administration are part of the decision

1. Proton Drive: end-to-end encryption across files

Proton describes Drive as end-to-end encrypted and provides desktop file syncing. Its privacy policy states: “All files in Proton Drive are protected with end-to-end encryption and Proton does not possess the ability to decrypt end-to-end encrypted data and therefore cannot share them with third parties.” That is Proton’s statement about its service, not an independent finding. The policy page reports a last-modified date of August 19, 2026.

Proton Drive is a straightforward option to investigate if your priority is a hosted service that says it cannot decrypt your files. The material available here does not establish independent audit status, current plan prices, or feature parity with Google Drive.

2. Sync.com: encrypted storage with backup and recovery

Sync.com describes its service as providing end-to-end encryption and zero-knowledge authentication. It also describes automatic backup, syncing, and recovery of deleted files or previous versions. These are Sync’s descriptions; storage allowances and feature availability should be checked against the specific plan before choosing it.

Rank #2

3. Tresorit: encrypted storage with sharing and collaboration

Tresorit describes its service as using end-to-end encryption and a zero-knowledge architecture, with storage, syncing, sharing, and collaboration for individual and organizational users. Its security page says encryption keys are client-side and are not sent to servers in unencrypted form. These are vendor descriptions; they do not independently validate the implementation or establish that the service meets a particular organization’s legal or compliance requirements.

Rank #3
Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Tresorit is worth assessing when sharing and collaboration matter alongside encryption. Organizations with specific regulatory or contractual obligations should evaluate those requirements directly rather than infer compliance from general security claims.

4. Nextcloud: more deployment control, more responsibility

Nextcloud is a file-sync-and-share platform, not automatically a turnkey consumer cloud account. You can self-host it or deploy it using a chosen backend or host, giving you more influence over where and how it runs. That flexibility also means making decisions about hosting, configuration, updates, and administration.

Rank #4
Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Nextcloud distinguishes server-side encryption from client-side end-to-end encryption. Its documentation describes end-to-end encryption as available for selected folders, not necessarily the entire library. The relevant version, clients, and server configuration matter, so confirm that your chosen setup supports the protections you need.

Why pCloud is not one of the four picks

pCloud’s cited documentation describes client-side encryption and zero-knowledge privacy for its Crypto folder, and presents its Encryption offering separately. That evidence supports a narrower claim than whole-library, default end-to-end encryption: do not assume all files in a pCloud account receive the Crypto folder’s protection. The four picks above offer a broader range of privacy models for this comparison, including hosted services described as encrypting files end to end and a self-managed platform.

How to choose based on your privacy needs

  • Want hosted storage and provider-described encryption across your files? Compare Proton Drive, Sync.com, and Tresorit, then check the specific sharing, recovery, and collaboration features you need.
  • Need an explicit backup or version-recovery feature? Sync.com describes backup, syncing, and recovery; confirm what the plan you are considering includes.
  • Need collaboration for a team? Tresorit describes collaboration features for individual and organizational users. Assess them against your actual workflow and obligations.
  • Want to control the deployment and storage backend? Consider Nextcloud if you are prepared to choose a host or self-host and handle maintenance.
  • Need encryption for only some files? Check the exact folder-level scope, client support, and configuration before moving sensitive data.

What private cloud storage does not automatically solve

End-to-end encryption limits a provider’s ability to read file contents, but it does not make every aspect of a service private or remove the need to protect your account and devices. The sources cited here do not establish comparative metadata exposure, independent security audits, data residency, or performance. If those factors are central to your decision, verify them directly for the service, plan, and deployment you intend to use.
