For the strongest control over where a prompt goes, use a model that actually runs on your device and verify its connections. Browser assistants and hosted chat services may send prompts—and sometimes page context or other information—to remote servers. But “private” can mean different things: keeping content off a provider’s servers, limiting retention, or preventing model-improvement use are separate goals. Check the data path and policy for the exact feature and account state you plan to use.
How the three options compare
| Option | Where processing may happen | Privacy question to check first | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser AI tools | Either on your device for a particular feature or on remote servers for an assistant | Does this feature send page content, URLs, files, or other context? | Convenient access to browser content can mean that more than your typed question is included. |
| Local models | On your device when inference is genuinely local | Does the application, integration, or selected endpoint send prompts or related data elsewhere? | You control the device and model choice, but must match hardware and setup to the workload. |
| Hosted services | Provider infrastructure | What do your account, plan, settings, and the service’s retention and model-improvement policies allow? | Easy access to a hosted model, with privacy terms and controls that can vary by account and feature. |
There is no single privacy score that captures these differences. A service may process a prompt without using it to improve a model; it may also retain some content for a stated purpose or under an exception. Decide which matters most to you before comparing features.

Browser AI: check the specific feature, not the browser’s private mode
A private browsing window is not evidence that an AI assistant runs locally. A browser can include both on-device AI features and an assistant that sends a prompt to servers. The relevant question is what the feature does with your input and any context it adds.

Mozilla’s Firefox Privacy Notice, effective May 4, 2026, says that some features—including automated translation and PDF alt-text suggestions—use small language models downloaded to the device. For those specified features, Mozilla says relevant page content, PDFs, images, and tab URLs stay on the device. This statement is limited to those features; it does not describe every AI function offered through Firefox.

Firefox Smart Window sends chat prompts to a server
Mozilla’s Smart Window Privacy Notice, last updated September 1, 2026, describes a different path. A local intent-classification model first determines whether an input is chat or search. For chat, the prompt may include browsing context and Memories. Mozilla says, “The assistant sends the full prompt (including your query, any relevant Memories, and any additional relevant browsing context) to a Mozilla server.” Mozilla then forwards the request to a third-party language model, which receives it from Mozilla and sees a Mozilla IP address rather than the user’s IP address. That intermediary does not make the prompt itself local.
Mozilla says Smart Window Memories are inferred on a Mozilla server and stored locally after processing. Its controls let users review or delete a specific Memory, block Memories from a chat, or turn off Memory creation. Those controls affect Memory handling; they do not change the fact that using the hosted assistant sends a prompt to a Mozilla server.

Local models: keep inference local, then check the rest of the data path
When a model performs inference on your device, the prompt need not be sent to a model provider for that inference. That can be a meaningful privacy advantage, but the label “local AI” alone does not establish that every part of an application stays local. Check the app’s network behavior, logging, model-download method, integrations, and selected endpoint. The notices discussed here do not establish that all local-model apps avoid telemetry or other network requests.
Match the computer to the model and workload
Local capability depends on the device, compatible model, and task. Compare memory, expected speed, setup effort, noise and power needs, and total cost for your intended workload; do not assume that every model will run well on every configuration.

Apple’s Mac mini product page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists configurations with up to 64GB of unified memory and describes clustering multiple Mac mini devices to run larger local AI models. These are Apple’s product descriptions, not independent comparative benchmarks. The listed maximum does not establish that every Mac mini configuration can run every model, or that a more expensive configuration is automatically more private.

Claude consumer guidance
Anthropic’s consumer guidance dated March 16, 2026 says Claude chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models when a user opts in, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or when the user otherwise explicitly opts in. Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if Model Improvement is enabled. That statement is about model improvement; it does not by itself mean that a chat is never processed or retained.

This is a feedback-related case, not a general retention period for all chats.

A separate, limited organizational retention policy
Anthropic’s notice effective June 9, 2026 describes automatic deletion after 30 days, subject to safety-system and legal exceptions, for specified organizational zero-data-retention deployments using designated covered models. The notice says this change does not affect consumer Free, Pro, or Max plans. Do not apply this organizational policy to ordinary consumer chats.
ChatGPT through Apple integrations
OpenAI’s Help Center says ChatGPT can be used through Apple integrations without a ChatGPT account. For that unlinked route, OpenAI says requests are processed to provide a response and comply with applicable laws, and are not stored or used for training. If you connect a ChatGPT account, account preferences and OpenAI policies apply; interactions may be saved in chat history depending on your choices and use.
Apple says the ChatGPT extension is off by default and users choose what content to send. It also says signed-in requests may be logged or used under the account’s OpenAI policies. These statements concern the described Apple integration, not every way of using ChatGPT.
Choose by the privacy outcome you need
- To avoid sending prompt content to a hosted model for inference: choose a local model and verify the application’s endpoint, integrations, and network behavior. On-device processing for one browser feature does not establish that a different assistant in the same browser is local.
- To limit what a browser assistant can learn from a page: inspect whether it attaches page text, URLs, files, browsing context, or Memories, and use available context and Memory controls. A setting that changes context does not necessarily change where the prompt is processed.
- To limit model-improvement use: read the exact service policy and settings for your account and feature. “Not used for training” or “not used to improve models” is narrower than “not processed,” “not retained,” or “never reviewed.”
- To limit retention: look for the applicable retention rule, its scope, and exceptions. Do not infer a general consumer policy from a specialized organizational deployment or from a feedback-specific rule.
- Before linking an account: check whether sign-in changes the provider’s applicable policies, history, or settings. The Apple integration example shows that linked and unlinked use can have different terms.
For any option, read the current notice for the specific feature and account state before sending sensitive material. Vendor notices describe the providers’ stated practices; they are not independent verification of implementation.
