Which private AI assistants don’t build a profile from my personal conversations? The clearest documented choices are Claude’s consumer service, which Anthropic says it does not use to build profiles from personal data incidentally present in training material, and local assistants such as LM Studio or Ollama, which can keep prompts on your device when you run downloaded models locally. Those are different kinds of assurance: Anthropic’s statement concerns a specific use of personal data, while local inference limits what the assistant provider receives. Neither should be mistaken for a blanket guarantee that chats are never retained, reviewed, or used to improve models.
ChatGPT and Claude both provide controls that affect model improvement, but training, retention, profiling, memory, safety review, and personalization are separate practices. The policies below describe consumer accounts unless stated otherwise, and are provider claims rather than independent audits.

What does “not building a profile” actually mean?
A provider can refrain from building a profile and still retain conversations, use them for model improvement under certain conditions, or process them for safety. Conversely, opting out of model training does not necessarily delete chat history or disable memory. Check each practice separately:
- Profiling: whether the provider says it uses conversation data to infer information about you or assemble a profile.
- Model improvement: whether chats can be used to train or improve models, and what settings or exceptions apply.
- Retention and deletion: how long chats remain in history or backend systems after deletion or use of a temporary mode.
- Memory and personalization: whether details from earlier conversations are saved to tailor future responses.
- Human review: whether conversations can be examined for safety, feedback, or other stated purposes.
- Processing location: whether prompts go to a provider’s cloud or stay on your device.
“Private” is not one universal setting. A good choice depends on which of these exposures matters for your use.

How ChatGPT handles training, history, and Temporary Chat
OpenAI says it may use content from individual services such as ChatGPT to improve models. For consumer accounts, turning off Improve the model for everyone in Data Controls prevents new conversations from being used for training; it does not remove saved chats from history. OpenAI describes this control in its model-improvement policy and Data Controls guidance.
Temporary Chat has different effects
OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history, do not create or use memories, and are not used to improve models. The Help Center says they may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety. If you submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback, the associated conversation may be used for training even if you opted out. See OpenAI’s training FAQ.

Business and API accounts are separate
OpenAI says ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and API data are not used for training by default, subject to the account and workspace controls that apply. These terms should not be assumed to apply to a personal ChatGPT account.

Anthropic’s Privacy Center makes a specific claim about personal data that may appear incidentally in material used to train models: “We do not use such personal data to contact people, build profiles about them, to try to sell or market anything to them, or to sell the information itself to any third party.” This is Anthropic’s stated practice, not an independent audit, and it addresses that training-source data rather than every possible use of a person’s Claude conversations. Consumer chats and model improvement
For Claude Free, Pro, and Max, Anthropic says chats and coding sessions may be used for model improvement if the user chooses to allow it, if a conversation is flagged for safety review, or through another explicit opt-in. Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when Model Improvement is enabled. These terms are described in its consumer training policy.
Deletion is not a universal 30-day rule
Anthropic says deleted chats leave chat history immediately and are removed from backend systems within 30 days. That does not mean every related record is necessarily erased on that schedule: data a user allows to be used for model improvement may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years in training pipelines, while flagged conversations and submitted feedback have separate retention provisions. Consult Anthropic’s retention policy for those distinctions.

Commercial Claude offerings have different terms
Anthropic says API and Claude for Work data are not used to train models unless customers opt in to the Development Partner Program or explicitly submit materials. Do not apply this commercial-account statement to consumer Claude accounts; Anthropic distinguishes them in its personal-data policy.
Can you run an assistant locally so prompts stay on your device?
Yes—if you download a model and run it locally rather than selecting a cloud-hosted model or sending information to a connected service. This avoids sending the prompt to that model provider as part of the local inference flow, but it is not a guarantee that every other part of your computer setup is private.

LM Studio
LM Studio says downloaded models can run offline, including chat and document processing, with entered content staying on the device. The selected model must fit the computer’s available hardware resources. See its offline documentation and model-choice guidance.
Ollama
Ollama says it does not see prompts or data when models are run locally. Its privacy policy distinguishes that flow from cloud-hosted model use, which is processed transiently. Check the selected model and connection path rather than assuming every Ollama workflow is local. See the Ollama privacy policy.
Local does not mean risk-free
Local inference can reduce exposure to an assistant provider, but other software and settings still matter. Consider operating-system telemetry, third-party tools, synced folders, network access, where a downloaded model came from, and any cloud fallback. Apple’s WWDC 2026 developer session describes a local agentic AI workflow on Mac in which data stays on the machine; it is an example of a particular workflow, not a blanket assurance about every feature or Mac configuration. The table reflects provider documentation for the stated account types; it is not a capability ranking. The policies do not establish that these assistants perform equally well, cost the same, or are equally easy to set up.
How to choose and reduce exposure
- Decide what you want to prevent. If your concern is profiling specifically, look for an explicit statement about profiling. If the concern is provider access to prompts, local inference is the more direct route.
- Check the account type. Consumer, business, and API terms can differ even when the assistant has the same brand name.
- Set each control separately. Review training opt-outs, memory or personalization settings, temporary modes, feedback behavior, and deletion options independently.
- Use less identifying information. Avoid entering passwords, account numbers, private records, or details that are not needed for the task.
- For local use, verify the route. Confirm the model is downloaded and running locally, then check that the app is not using a cloud model, plugin, or connected service for the task.
- Choose for the work you actually do. Local models require suitable hardware and may involve setup trade-offs. Compare quality, usability, and cost for your intended tasks rather than assuming one privacy control makes all options equivalent.
