PRINCE2 is a project-management method, not a software package. PeopleCert’s Version 7 material does not require or endorse a particular platform; teams can choose tools that suit their project and use them to support the method’s governance, data management and communication needs.
Does PRINCE2 require project management software?
No specific application is required by the official PeopleCert material reviewed. PRINCE2 sets out principles, practices, processes and responsibilities; software is a separate choice. A team can use a dedicated project-management platform, general-purpose collaboration tools, or a mix, provided its working arrangements support the project.

Version 7 emphasizes tailoring the method to a project’s needs, size, complexity and context. PRINCE2 7 co-author Tanja van den Akker describes that flexibility: “Today there are no minimum requirements for a PRINCE2 project. Instead, there are simply the principles and agreed tolerances, so you are freer to make your own decisions and find your own solutions.” PeopleCert

Use the method your project actually needs as the basis for selection. The following are practical evaluation criteria inferred from PeopleCert’s descriptions of tailoring, roles, practices, digital and data management, and communication; they are not an official PeopleCert software checklist.

- Fit the project’s context: Can you configure the workflow to match the project’s size, complexity and working practices, without forcing unnecessary process?
- Support governance and recurring practices: Can the team keep the records and carry out the reviews or other routines it has agreed to use?
- Manage project information: Can people find and maintain relevant project data, decisions, status and issues?
- Make responsibilities and progress visible: Can the people involved understand roles, ownership, progress and outstanding issues?
- Communicate with stakeholders: Can the tool provide updates in a form and cadence that suit the project’s stakeholders?
These questions help compare tools against your implementation of PRINCE2. They do not establish that a particular vendor has been certified, integrated with PRINCE2, or endorsed by PeopleCert.
How to choose tools for a PRINCE2 project
- Agree how the project will work. Identify the governance, responsibilities, practices and communication needs the team will actually use. Tailor the method to the project rather than starting with a software feature list.
- Map those needs to tool capabilities. Check whether candidate tools can represent the agreed workflow, manage project information and make progress and issues accessible to the relevant people.
- Check the fit with the team and stakeholders. Consider who needs access, how they will receive updates and whether the tool’s structure adds friction or unnecessary steps.
- Choose the simplest workable setup. A single platform is not automatically better than a combination of tools. Use the arrangement that supports the project’s needs without adding needless process.
