You can preview PDF, PSD, XLS, XLSX, DOC, DOCX, PPT, and PPTX files in a browser with Google Drive. Its published preview list includes all of these formats, though a preview is a scaled-down view and may not match the original exactly. Microsoft’s web editors are another option for Office files, with support varying by extension and, for XLS, by storage location.
View files in Google Drive
Google Drive is the most direct single-browser option for the formats covered here. Google lists PDF, PSD, XLS, XLSX, DOC, DOCX, PPT, and PPTX as previewable formats. You need to sign in to follow Drive’s documented viewing workflow; the sources do not establish that every file can be opened anonymously or that every service is free in every region.

- Sign in to Google Drive.
- If the file is not already in Drive, upload it.
- Double-click the file to open its preview.
For PDFs, Drive also lets you choose whether they open in a new tab or in Drive’s preview interface. The preview is not a substitute for checking the complete file: Google describes it as scaled down and says it may appear slightly different from the original. Don’t rely on it for exact layout decisions or editing.

When Microsoft’s web editors make sense
Use Word, Excel, or PowerPoint for the web when you need an Office editor rather than only a quick preview, and your account and file location support the format. Microsoft’s documentation distinguishes viewing from editing: older DOC and PPT files may be converted when edited, and Excel macros do not run in Excel for the web. For XLS, confirm that the file is on OneDrive rather than SharePoint if you plan to view it there.

Google Drive also offers an Open with route for files handled by an Office web editor. For business and enterprise accounts, Google says administrators must enable the Office for the web integration; availability may therefore depend on account settings.
Previewing, editing, and converting are different tasks
- Preview: Open the file in Drive to inspect its contents. A preview may differ from the complete file and is not a guarantee of exact formatting.
- Edit: Open it in an appropriate web editor if the account supports that workflow. Check the format-specific behavior before changing an older Office file.
- Convert to PDF: Adobe’s Google Drive integration can convert supported Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Photoshop files to PDF. Adobe says this route requires signing in to Adobe, so it is an optional conversion path, not a requirement for viewing the original file.
Use caution with unexpected files
Google warns that opening a suspicious file may trigger a warning. Avoid opening unexpected attachments or files from untrusted sources. If the document’s appearance or contents matter for a decision, verify them in a suitable full editor rather than treating a browser preview as definitive.
