Do not publish a link to a private repository unless its owner has approved that link for public release. A private GitHub repository URL does not give a reader access on its own, since GitHub repository visibility is what controls who can view a repository. The risk is disclosure: the URL, its owner and repository names, and the surrounding sentence can tell the public that a particular private project exists and who runs it, even when the contents stay closed.
The guidance below applies to GitHub, where the feature names and controls described here are documented. It does not carry over automatically to GitLab, Bitbucket, or self-hosted Git servers, which need their own checks.

What a private link actually exposes
Visibility and identity are separate concerns. GitHub documents that you can choose who can view a repository, and a reader without permission will not see the code by following the link. But an article is a public statement, and the link can still disclose:
- the owner’s personal or organization name, which appears in the URL path
- the repository name, which often describes an unreleased product, client, or internal tool
- the existence of the project itself, which may be confidential before launch
- branch names, issue numbers, or pull-request identifiers if they appear in a deep link
- the editorial context: a sentence such as “the team’s new internal tool, found at…” reveals more than the URL does
Treat each of these as a separate item to approve. Owner approval for the link is not the same as approval for the wording around it.

Pre-publication checklist
Run this check on every repository reference before the article goes live, including references that appear in captions, footnotes, and image alt text.
- Identify the destination. Copy the full URL and note whether it points to a repository root, a file, a directory, a commit, a branch, an issue, or a pull request.
- Check the owner and name. Confirm that both are approved for public release, not just that the page loads.
- Read the anchor text and nearby prose. Remove or generalize any phrase that names an unannounced product, a client, or an internal team.
- Test the link while signed out (see the next section).
- Confirm authorization in writing. When it is unclear whether the owner or organization wants the link public, ask the repository owner or the organization’s designated contact, and keep the reply on file.
- Record the decision. Note who approved the reference and on what date, so later edits do not quietly reintroduce an unapproved link.
Testing a link from a signed-out session
A signed-out test shows what an anonymous reader can open. Use a private browser window, or a browser profile that is not logged into GitHub, and paste the URL directly rather than following an internal navigation path.
- Open a new private or incognito window in a browser with no GitHub session.
- Paste the exact URL from the draft, including any file path or anchor.
- Confirm the page loads and shows only content you have approved for publication.
- If the page does not load, the reference is not publicly viewable. Do not publish it as a working link. Ask the owner for an approved public alternative, or remove the link.
- If the page loads, check it again after you have finished editing the article, because the destination may have changed.
A passing test does not clear the reference. You still have to approve the owner name, repository name, and surrounding text.

Choosing a safe replacement for a private link
When the article needs a code example or a reference, compare the options below. The trade-offs are editorial, and no single option fits every organization.

A sanitized sample is the usual best choice when the goal is a working example. Only publish one after confirming that its commit history and any copied files are clean, not just the version on the page.
Controls that reduce mistakes
Editorial review is the only control that catches an unapproved link in an article. Platform features help with different risks.

Organization settings
GitHub recommends limiting who can create repositories and restricting who can change repository visibility where that fits your organization. These controls reduce the chance that a project becomes public by accident, which is the situation that makes a link safe to publish in the first place. Review them in the organization’s security settings.

Secret scanning and push protection
Secret scanning looks for known credential patterns in supported GitHub content. Push protection can block a push that contains a supported secret when it is configured. Neither feature reviews links in an external article, and neither decides whether a repository name may be published. Availability for private and internal repositories depends on your GitHub plan and configuration, so confirm what your organization has enabled.

Act in this order: correct the article, notify the owner, and only then consider a longer cleanup. Removing the link from the article does not undo copies that have already been cached or shared.

Exposed credentials
If a token, key, or password appeared in a published reference, the owner should revoke or rotate it promptly. GitHub recommends revoking or rotating exposed credentials as the first step, because rewriting history is complex and does not recall copies.
Repository history
Sensitive material can persist in a repository’s commit history, forks, clones, cached views, and pull requests. GitHub describes rewriting history as having side effects and recommends coordinating the change with collaborators, whose local clones will need to be cleaned as well. Plan this with the owner before anything is changed.
GitHub Support and removal requests
GitHub Support may help remove certain cached views and pull-request references for sensitive data. It does not remove non-sensitive data, and it may limit help where credential rotation already sufficiently reduces the risk. For a high-risk private-information removal request, GitHub asks for a working, clickable link to each affected file and an explanation of the specific security risk. This process is an exceptional service for high-risk content. It is not a general promise to retract every public link.

What changing visibility does not fix
Switching a repository from public to private does not make existing public forks private. If an article has already sent readers to a public copy, changing the visibility of the original leaves those forks accessible. Do not promise an owner or reader that a visibility change will erase earlier public copies, and treat a visibility change as a control for future exposure, not a cleanup for past exposure.
Keeping public examples separate from confidential work
The most durable fix is structural. Keep one public repository for examples that are meant to be read, and keep confidential projects in a separate space. Publish examples from that public space, not from working repositories, so an editor never has to decide whether a private project’s links are safe. Review the public space’s history on a schedule, because an example that was clean last month may have had a sensitive file committed and later removed.
Turning a private-link mistake into a fix
When a reader or the owner raises a concern about a published link, respond quickly: confirm what is visible, remove or replace the link, and tell the owner what appeared and for how long. Record what was exposed so the editorial team can see which checks failed, and update the checklist if a new kind of reference slipped through.
