If a pressure washer won’t start, first identify whether it runs on gasoline or electricity: the basic checks differ. On a gas model, check fuel, the starting controls, spark-plug lead and oil if the engine has a low-oil sensor. If the recoil cord feels unusually hard to pull, release pressure by aiming the gun safely and squeezing its trigger. On an electric model, check its GFCI and power supply. Follow the manuals for your exact washer and engine before attempting further diagnosis.
Start with the symptom and power source
Use the troubleshooting path that matches the machine. Gasoline checks such as choke position and spark-plug lead do not apply to an electric washer. Conversely, an electric model’s GFCI and supply circuit are not the starting checks for a gasoline engine.

| What you notice | Where to start |
|---|---|
| Gasoline engine does not fire | Check fuel and the controls listed in the unit’s starting instructions. |
| Recoil cord is unusually hard to pull | Safely squeeze the spray-gun trigger to release pressure in the pump and hose. |
| Electric motor does not start | Check the GFCI and the circuit supplying power to the washer. |
If a gasoline pressure washer won’t start
Simpson’s use-and-care manual lists several basic no-start checks. The exact controls and settings vary by model, so use the labels on your machine and its starting procedure rather than assuming all washers work alike.
- Fuel: Check that the tank contains fuel. Simpson recommends adding fresh fuel if it is empty.
- Choke: Confirm its position against the model’s starting instructions. Choke procedures are engine-specific; Briggs & Stratton’s CR950 guidance, for example, applies to pressure washers equipped with that engine, not to every model. See Briggs & Stratton’s CR950 starting instructions.
- Spark-plug lead: Check that the lead is connected. If the engine manual calls for plug inspection or removal, use a tool and replacement plug matched to that engine. Simpson describes a spark-plug socket or wrench for removal, but the available guidance does not establish a universal socket size or plug number.
- Engine switch and fuel valve: Check that each is in the position required for starting; Simpson lists an engine switch or fuel valve set to OFF as possible causes.
- Engine oil: If your engine has a low-oil sensor, check the level and fill it as the engine manual directs. Not every model has that sensor.
These are initial checks, not a universal repair procedure. Simpson directs owners to the engine owner’s manual for further engine troubleshooting.

If the pull cord is hard to pull
Pressure held in the pump or high-pressure hose can make the recoil rope difficult to pull. With the spray gun aimed in a safe direction, squeeze its trigger to release the pressure, then try again. Simpson notes this can happen when the trigger was not squeezed before shutdown. See its pressure-washer FAQ for the manufacturer’s guidance.
If the cord remains stuck after you release pressure, stop rather than forcing it. Pressure lock is one possible explanation, not a diagnosis for every stuck rope; consult the equipment or engine manual, or contact service support.

If an electric pressure washer won’t start
For a silent electric motor, Simpson recommends checking the GFCI and resetting it if it has tripped. Aim the spray gun safely and squeeze the trigger to release built-up pressure, then check the supply circuit breaker or fuse. Its electric-motor FAQ covers these checks. If they do not resolve the problem, contact the manufacturer or service support.

Read the operator’s manual for the washer and the owner’s manual for its engine before service or adjustments. Briggs & Stratton cautions that consulting both manuals helps avoid injury or property damage; its small-engine troubleshooting guidance also identifies stale fuel, dirt and debris as common problems for outdoor power equipment. Those general causes do not prove that a particular washer has a fuel-system or carburetor fault.

If the basic checks do not help, use the manual for the exact model and engine or contact a qualified service channel. Avoid replacing parts or attempting internal repairs based only on a no-start symptom: the manufacturer guidance here does not establish that a particular engine is flooded, has failed ignition or has a bad carburetor.
