You can prepare a DJ set in a browser without uploading your music—but browser-based processing alone does not prove that a website sends no data. A privacy-first workflow starts with files you select, keeps analysis and planning on your device where possible, checks any separate network activity, then transfers the playlist or metadata into the DJ software and USB workflow your equipment supports.
What “private in the browser” does—and doesn’t—mean
The Web Audio API lets web applications load and work with audio. MDN describes media elements as a common approach for full-length tracks and notes that audio contexts should be started from a user gesture. That demonstrates browser capability, not the privacy practices of a particular site. MDN’s Web Audio API best practices are useful context.

Separate two questions: where the audio is processed, and what else the website communicates. A page may process selected audio locally while still making ordinary requests for scripts, fonts, analytics, crash reports, catalog searches, cloud analysis, or account synchronization. “Client-side” does not mean “offline” or “no data sent.” Check the tool’s privacy explanation and, where possible, its network behavior before relying on it for sensitive material.
File access and microphone access are also different. A file-based preparation session should not need microphone permission unless a clearly explained feature requires it. The W3C Web Audio API 1.1 Working Draft, dated 2026-09-22, treats microphone capture as a separate capability and notes privacy implications of analyzing ambient or unique audio. A draft specification describes the API; it is not a guarantee that every browser implements every capability identically. Read the W3C Web Audio API 1.1 Working Draft.

Build the workflow around files you choose
- Select local tracks deliberately. Use the browser’s file picker or another clearly user-initiated file selection. Treat this differently from importing a cloud library, searching an online catalog, signing in, or enabling sync; those may involve separate services and data flows.
- Listen and analyze in the browser. Review the tracks and generate only the preparation information you need, such as BPM, key, waveform, or cue suggestions. Confirm where the tool saves those results and how to remove them. Browser storage can retain settings or set data in the device profile, which may be accessible to others who can use that profile.
- Minimize what leaves the device. Prefer tools that explain whether audio bytes, filenames, search queries, and analysis metadata are transmitted. Review analytics and other third-party requests separately from the audio-processing claim. Do not grant microphone access for a file-only workflow.
- Save a portable plan. If the browser tool is not your performance library, export a playlist, cue sheet, or compact set plan that you can use to recreate the set in your usual DJ software. For example, Deckwave’s maintainers describe a tool that reads selected files locally, analyzes them, discards the audio, and saves the mix as a score. Those are project-maintainer claims, not an independent security audit. See the Deckwave project README.
- Move the plan into your DJ library. Import or recreate the playlist and analysis in the software used with your equipment. Keep the original music library intact while preparing the performance copy.
- Verify the export before the event. Connect the prepared USB storage to the target player or compatible setup and confirm the expected tracks and playlists appear. Keep a separate backup when the event matters; do not format a drive until you have checked equipment requirements and copied off any data you need.
Use rekordbox as a concrete handoff example
AlphaTheta’s English-language rekordbox ver. 7.2.14 manual documents a conventional bridge from preparation to performance: add computer tracks to the Collection, review track information such as waveform, artwork, BPM, and key analysis, then load tracks or playlists from the Collection onto USB storage. The manual states: “You can load tracks and playlists from [Collection] to USB storage devices (flash memory or hard disk). Connect the USB storage device to a DJ player for your DJ performance.”
That is a software handoff, not evidence that browser analysis automatically transfers into rekordbox. Depending on the browser tool’s export format and the library software, you may need to import a playlist or enter cues and analysis again. Follow the instructions for your installed software version. Consult the rekordbox ver. 7.2.14 manual.

Check player and USB compatibility before exporting
A USB drive that works with one player or library generation may not be suitable for another. AlphaTheta says certain players require OneLibrary and warns that supported USB file systems depend on the target equipment. Check the current guidance for your exact player model and software version before preparing or formatting storage. Know the browser workflow’s limits
Browser tools can make listening, analysis, and set planning convenient, but they need not replace a full desktop DJ library or its player-specific export features. The Web Audio API specification itself notes that some capabilities of advanced desktop audio software are difficult or impossible to replicate with Web Audio. Treat browser preparation as a focused part of the workflow, then use established library software when your controller or player requires it.
Also avoid assuming that selected folders remain available across visits. File access, persistence, and storage behavior vary by browser and application. Save an export you can recover, and consult the browser’s current documentation and the tool’s own instructions for its storage and clearing behavior.
