Prepare a Fresh Linux Server for Coolify: Reimage and Install

Prepare a fresh Linux server, verify Coolify’s requirements and SSH access, then install with the official command. Reimaging itself is handled by your provider.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the cleanest Coolify installation, start with a fresh, supported Linux server, confirm SSH access and enough resources, then run Coolify’s official installer over SSH. Reimaging is not a Coolify feature: if you are reusing a VPS or dedicated server, reinstall its operating system through your provider’s own controls or recovery process. Coolify recommends a fresh server to avoid conflicts with existing applications.

What reimaging does—and what it does not do

Reimaging means replacing a server’s current operating system with a fresh one. Coolify’s installation guide recommends a fresh server, but does not provide a universal reimage procedure or a Coolify button that reinstalls an operating system. The steps depend on the hosting provider and machine, so use the provider’s documented OS reinstall or provisioning workflow.

Before proceeding, treat reimaging as a destructive operation: it can remove the operating system and data on the server. Back up anything you need and confirm which disks or volumes the provider’s reinstall process will affect. The Coolify documentation does not define provider-specific data-retention behavior.

Choose a supported Linux image and size the server

Coolify’s self-hosting guide lists Linux distributions across several families. It documents support for Debian and Ubuntu; CentOS, Fedora, Red Hat, AlmaLinux, Rocky, TencentOS, and Asahi; SLES, SUSE, and openSUSE; Arch Linux; Alpine Linux; and 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS. The guide says Ubuntu non-LTS releases should use manual installation. On some Red Hat-based variants, Docker may need to be installed manually first.

Check the image’s architecture as well as its name. Coolify lists amd64 and arm64; Raspberry Pi OS installations require arm64. The guide does not rank supported distributions or hosting providers as universally best, so choose an image you can maintain and that meets the requirements for your server.

Requirement Coolify’s documented minimum What to account for
CPU 2 cores Builds and hosted applications add workload beyond the control plane.
Memory 2 GB RAM Coolify says smaller systems may run but are not recommended; workload needs vary.
Disk 10 GB free space Leave additional room for Docker images, volumes, and backups.
Architecture amd64 or arm64 Raspberry Pi OS requires arm64.

These are project-stated minimum requirements, not a guarantee that a production workload will fit. The guide gives a particular optimized application mix on a Hetzner CAX11 with 4 GB memory, 2 vCPU, and 40 GB storage as a rough example, not a general capacity recommendation. Size the server for the applications, databases, and builds you expect to run.

The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

Before you reinstall or provision

  • Protect existing data. Make and verify backups before a reinstall if anything on the server must be retained.
  • Confirm SSH access. Coolify’s manual server guide calls for a reachable Linux server, console or password access, and an open SSH port—usually 22. Its setup example uses root; the guide also points to a separate non-root-user setup.
  • Check network access. Ensure your server can be reached over SSH and that your firewall permits the connections needed for your setup.
  • Plan for Docker’s effect on existing services. Coolify validation can install Docker and restart its service, temporarily interrupting existing containers. This is another reason to use a fresh server.

Install Coolify on the fresh server

  1. Provision the operating system. Use your provider’s control panel or documented recovery process to install a supported Linux image. Provider-specific steps are outside Coolify’s installation guide.
  2. Verify the server. Confirm that the machine is reachable over SSH, the architecture is supported, and CPU, memory, and free disk meet the documented minimums. Allow extra capacity for your workload.
  3. Connect over SSH. Sign in using the account and access method configured for the server. Keep the session on the server where you intend to install Coolify.
  4. Run the official installer. In the SSH terminal, execute:
    curl -fsSL https://cdn.coollabs.io/coolify/install.sh | bash
  5. Follow the installer’s printed instructions. The terminal displays the next steps after installation; use those instructions to continue setup.

What server validation does

When you add or validate a server, Coolify checks SSH connectivity, inspects the operating system and available tools, installs or verifies Docker Engine and Docker Compose, records server information, and starts the proxy. Validation on a new server can take several minutes. Because Docker may be installed or restarted during validation, do not treat a server with active containers as unaffected.

Decide where the Coolify control plane should run

Reimaging answers how to prepare a workload server; it does not determine who operates the Coolify dashboard or control plane. With self-hosted Coolify, the instance runs on infrastructure you control. It starts with a localhost server that can also run deployed resources, so dashboard activity and application workloads share that machine’s resources. Coolify suggests considering a remote server for production workloads to keep them from affecting the Coolify instance.

With Coolify Cloud, the Coolify team operates the control plane, but you still provide and manage the servers that run your applications. You remain responsible for those servers’ operating-system updates, firewall policy, application and database data, and workload backups. Cloud therefore changes control-plane operations, not the need for workload infrastructure.
