Prepaid service is paid for before use; postpaid service is billed after use. If a prepaid SIM has expired, whether you can reactivate it—and keep the number or remaining credit—depends on the carrier and country. “Contract SIM” is not a universal synonym for a fixed-term agreement, so check the local plan terms and your account status before paying or switching.
Can you reactivate an expired prepaid SIM?
Sometimes, but there is no global reactivation period or procedure. A carrier may treat a line as suspended, expired, permanently disconnected, or released for reassignment; those statuses can have different outcomes. A top-up may restore some expired lines, while other cases may require a fee, identity verification, or carrier assistance. Once a number has been released or reassigned, recovery is not assured.

Before making a payment, contact the carrier through an official support channel and ask:
- Is the number suspended, expired, permanently disconnected, or already released?
- What is the last date on which the existing number can be recovered?
- Does reactivation require a top-up, a separate fee, identity verification, or a branch visit?
- Will any remaining balance be restored, and will reactivation preserve the number?
- Can this account move to another plan type?
Number retention and balance retention are separate questions. A carrier might preserve one without the other, so get both answers for your account before paying.

How prepaid and postpaid service differ
“Postpaid” describes when you pay: after using the service, usually through a bill. “Prepaid” means paying in advance, typically by topping up. The label “contract SIM” can also refer to an agreement or commitment, but it should not be assumed to mean the same thing as postpaid in every market.
| Question | Prepaid | Postpaid |
|---|---|---|
| When do you pay? | Before use, by topping up or buying service credit. | After use, through a bill that may include additional charges. |
| How is spending managed? | Spending is generally limited to the amount paid in advance, though plan terms and add-ons still matter. The CRTC says prepaid customers pay for service they plan to use. | The bill can include charges beyond the recurring amount. In Canada, the CRTC lists protections including limits on data overage and roaming charges. |
| What can happen during non-use? | Validity, balance expiry, deactivation, and reactivation rules depend on the carrier and jurisdiction. | Billing or other obligations may continue. Some carriers offer a paid number-retention or custody option during non-use. |
| Can you recover the same number? | Possibly, within a carrier’s recovery period and subject to its steps; it is not guaranteed. | Some carriers offer a way to retain a number during non-use, but availability and conditions are carrier-specific. |
These are payment-model distinctions, not a claim that either type is always cheaper. Cost depends on the specific plan, fees, and usage being compared.

What published rules say in Cambodia, India, and Canada
The following examples apply only to the named country and carrier or regulator. They are not interchangeable rules for other places.

The Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia announced on 22 December 2025 that, from 1 January 2026, mobile operators must allow a number expired for no more than 180 days to be reactivated by topping up the main account, without requiring re-registration at an operator branch. Operators must retain the main-account balance for 180 days after service expiry and restore the remaining balance when the customer tops up during that period. The announcement also requires at least two SMS reminders and reminders through the operator app before the retention period ends. These requirements are specific to Cambodia. India: Reliance Jio’s prepaid reactivation process
Jio says it may deactivate a prepaid number after 90 days or more without the activity it specifies. If the main-account balance is above ₹20 at the end of 90 days, Jio’s Automatic Number Retention Scheme deducts ₹20 and extends the non-use period by 30 days. The process continues until the balance is below ₹20, after which the number may be deactivated. Jio says a number deactivated for non-use can be reactivated by paying ₹20 within 15 days; re-KYC and any applicable recharge are also required. These are Jio’s published terms, not a rule for all Indian carriers. Check Jio’s current terms.
India: Jio postpaid safe custody
For a postpaid number, Jio describes a Safe Custody Scheme costing ₹150 plus applicable taxes in advance for each three-month period or part of one. Dues and advance charges must be cleared. Jio says a restoration request made during the safe-custody period reactivates the number within 24 hours, and platform-services rental may continue. Confirm current eligibility and charges with Jio before relying on the scheme. See Jio’s published postpaid information.

India: changing between prepaid and postpaid
TRAI says subscribers may migrate from prepaid to postpaid and vice versa without a migration charge or a change to the mobile number. This is an Indian migration rule; it does not establish how a disconnected or already reassigned number will be handled. Read TRAI’s consumer FAQ.

Canada: payment timing and prepaid balance grace period
The CRTC explains that postpaid users receive a monthly bill for accumulated charges, while prepaid users top up and pay for planned service. Its Canada-specific guidance lists a minimum seven-calendar-day grace period for prepaid customers to top up and retain their balance, as well as certain postpaid protections, including limits on data overage and roaming charges. These are Canadian consumer protections, not a global standard. Read the CRTC’s Wireless Code guidance.

What to do if you forgot to top up or pay
- Check the account status. Use the carrier’s official app, website, or support line to find out whether the service is suspended, expired, or disconnected.
- Ask for the recovery deadline. Request the exact date and the steps that apply to your account—not a general estimate for another plan or customer.
- Confirm payment and verification requirements. Ask whether you need a top-up, fee, re-KYC, or in-person visit, and whether the amount will be credited to the account or is a separate charge.
- Check the balance and number separately. Confirm whether remaining credit will be restored and whether the original number is still available.
- Ask about migration only after confirming the line can be retained. Rules for changing plan type do not necessarily restore a disconnected or reassigned number.
Which type should you choose?
Choose based on how you want to pay and manage usage, not on the assumption that one option always costs less.
- Prepaid may suit you if you prefer paying in advance and want spending generally bounded by the credit you add. Check the plan’s validity, balance-expiry, and inactivity rules.
- Postpaid may suit you if you prefer a bill after use. Check recurring charges, possible additional usage charges, and whether the carrier offers a paid option to retain a line during non-use.
- If keeping your number is essential, ask the carrier what happens after non-use and how to preserve the line before changing plans or stopping payment.
For the current payment-model comparison and Canada-specific protections, see the CRTC’s guidance. For a plan change in India, consult TRAI’s FAQ and confirm how the carrier will handle your account.
