Short answer: pmls64.dll is associated with PremierOpinion, a survey or market-research application commonly classified by security tools as adware or a potentially unwanted application (PUA). It is not a normal Windows component, but its presence alone does not prove a destructive Trojan infection. Remove the parent application, restart Windows, and scan for remaining files and persistence mechanisms rather than deleting the DLL in isolation.
What PremierOpinion is
PremierOpinion is consumer survey and market-research software associated with VoiceFive and Comscore. Some people install it knowingly; others encounter it bundled with another download. Because it can be difficult to recognize, display unwanted advertising or pop-ups, and remain after the original installer is forgotten, security products and support forums have used labels such as Adware.PremierOpinion and Pua.Premier.Opinion. Microsoft community guidance describes it as unwanted software and recommends uninstalling the application rather than deleting individual files (Microsoft Community).

“Potentially unwanted application” is not the same as a confirmed destructive virus. A PremierOpinion detection may indicate an unwanted program, an installer that bundled it, or a leftover component. It does not by itself establish that the computer contains a Trojan, ransomware, or credential-stealing malware. A separate detection in the same scan must be assessed on its own.

pmls64.dll is the name commonly associated with a 64-bit PremierOpinion library; pmls.dll is described in historical removal material as the related 32-bit component. Other names reported with PremierOpinion include pmservice.exe, pmropn.exe, pmropn32.exe, and pmropn64.exe (BleepingComputer removal guide).

A path alone does not establish whether a file is legitimate or malicious. Before taking action, record the complete path, detection name, file properties, digital signer, and, where available, the SHA-256 hash. Historical logs show that both the file names and registry entries can appear in security detections, but old file lists do not guarantee that every later variant uses the same names (historical Malwarebytes log).
Why deleting only the DLL is a bad first step
The library may be loaded by a process or service, so manual deletion can fail. Even if it succeeds, the parent application, scheduled task, startup entry, registry data, or an installer can remain and recreate the file. Removing a single module can also leave Windows or another program trying to load a missing component. A recent removal analysis therefore recommends removing the complete PremierOpinion installation instead of treating pmls64.dll as an isolated file (Trojan Killer analysis).
Safe removal procedure
- Assess whether you need to disconnect. If the only symptom is a PremierOpinion detection, internet disconnection is optional. Disconnect immediately if you see suspicious downloads, suspected credential theft, ransomware activity, or unknown remote-control behavior; use a separate trusted device for account recovery.
- Uninstall the parent application. Open Windows Settings’ installed-apps list, or Control Panel’s Programs and Features, and search for PremierOpinion, VoiceFive, Comscore-related entries, and unfamiliar software installed at the same time. Use the normal uninstaller. Do not remove unrelated Windows components.
- Restart Windows. Rebooting unloads a locked DLL and completes remediation that a security product has scheduled for restart.
- Run an updated Malwarebytes scan. Update the detection database, run a threat scan, review the paths and detection names, and quarantine items you have identified as unwanted. On a managed computer, send the report to IT before removing corporate software.
- Use AdwCleaner for residual adware. If pop-ups, browser changes, unwanted services, or PUP traces remain, download AdwCleaner from the official Malwarebytes page or its official mirror. Avoid advertisements and third-party download buttons.
- Restart and scan again. A successful cleanup should leave no PremierOpinion entry in installed apps, no related process or service, no recurring pop-ups, and no repeat detection after reboot.
If the detection returns or the file is locked
Windows says the file is in use
Do not terminate arbitrary Windows processes or use an unverified “DLL unlocker.” Uninstall PremierOpinion, restart, and run the security scan before launching unnecessary programs. If the item is still locked, use the security product’s reboot-remediation option and escalate with logs.

The file reappears after quarantine
Possible causes include a remaining service or scheduled task, a second bundled installer, a failed reboot cleanup, multiple copies, or a detection of a quarantined artifact rather than a live file. A security-community report describes repeated .vir suffixes on a pmls64.dll detection, illustrating why repeated deletion does not identify the persistence mechanism (OpenText Cybersecurity community report).
Check installed apps, Startup entries, Task Scheduler, browser extensions and notification permissions, and recently created files in %TEMP%. If another installer is responsible, removing only the DLL will not solve the recurrence.
PremierOpinion is not listed
The program may already have been removed, may exist under a different publisher name, or may be reinstalled by another bundled application. Check the full detection path and scan report rather than repeatedly running the same scan. Also consider browser notifications or another application producing the symptoms.

The path is under System32
Treat that as a reason for verification, not an instruction to delete. Capture the full path, signer, hash, detection name, and whether the item is active or quarantined. On an employer-managed computer, submit those details to the organization’s security team.
When to use diagnostic help
Seek assistance when detections recur after uninstall, reboot, and follow-up scans; when several unrelated unwanted programs appear; or when normal Windows startup is affected. Provide the Malwarebytes report, AdwCleaner log, Windows version and architecture, complete detection path, detection name, and whether the item returns after reboot.
Malwarebytes forum helpers may request FRST or FRST64 logs and generate a machine-specific fix. One resolved support example used FRST64 as administrator and its Fix button, but a fix script from another case should never be copied to a different computer (Malwarebytes forum solutions). Official support is available at Malwarebytes Support and Malwarebytes Forums.

What a clean result looks like
- PremierOpinion and related publisher entries are gone from installed apps.
- No related service, process, scheduled task, startup item, or browser extension remains.
- Pop-ups, redirects, and unwanted notifications have stopped.
- Malwarebytes and, when needed, AdwCleaner complete follow-up scans without the detection returning after a reboot.
If those conditions are met, there is no reason to reset Windows solely because pmls64.dll was detected. A reset is a last resort for broader, unresolved compromise and should follow a backup and account-security plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is pmls64.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with PremierOpinion and is not a standard Windows library. Verify its path and signer before removal.
Is PremierOpinion dangerous?
It is commonly treated as adware or a PUA. That classification indicates unwanted behavior or installation, not automatic proof of a destructive virus.
