Premation is a free, open-source motion editor for macOS and Windows that puts keyframes, editable motion curves and compositing tools at the center of its workflow. Its keyframing shortcuts deliberately echo Adobe After Effects, while its focus is quite different from CapCut’s all-in-one, social-video editing workflow. It may be worth trying if you want a free video editor with keyframes and motion-design controls—but it is still pre-1.0 beta software, not a proven After Effects replacement.
What Premation is—and what it is not
Premation is a desktop motion graphics editor, not just a tool for trimming clips and adding titles. Its feature set is built around compositions and layers, with keyframe animation, a graph editor, masks, mattes, 2.5D cameras, character rigging, particles and effects. The intended audience is someone who wants to build and refine animated visuals, kinetic typography or composites—not necessarily someone looking for the quickest route from phone footage to a social post.
That distinction matters when comparing it with familiar free video editors. Premation aims to offer more control over how visual elements move and combine. It does not claim to match the breadth or maturity of Adobe After Effects: Premation’s own comparison acknowledges that it has fewer effects and lacks rotoscoping, and its feature documentation lists camera solving, planar tracking and roto as not included.
How its keyframing resembles After Effects
The strongest basis for calling Premation an After Effects alternative is its approach to animation and its shortcut conventions. Premation documents After Effects-style concepts and shortcuts, including F9 for Easy Ease, Shift+G to open the graph editor and U to reveal animated properties. These similarities can make the controls feel more familiar to an After Effects user than the keyframe tools in a general-purpose social editor.

Keyframes and motion curves
Premation says every numeric property can be animated with keyframes. Its graph editor exposes both value and speed curves, with Bézier handles for shaping motion between keyframes. That gives you a way to adjust not only where an animated property starts and ends, but also how it accelerates or eases through the transition.
This is useful for jobs such as animating a title into place, refining a graphic’s movement or adjusting how a layer changes over time. It is not proof that Premation reproduces every After Effects control, effect or production workflow. The documented similarities are best understood as a familiar animation model and selected shortcuts, not feature parity.

Premation vs CapCut: which workflow fits?
Both programs support keyframe animation, but they are aimed at different editing habits. CapCut’s official product information confirms keyframes in its browser, PC and Mac editors. Premation is the more relevant option if your priority is hands-on motion design; CapCut is the more natural fit if your priority is assembling and publishing social video quickly.

Choose CapCut when speed, creator-oriented editing and a social-video workflow matter more than shaping motion curves. Choose Premation when you want to work with layers and animation in more depth and value an After Effects-like shortcut model. If your project depends on rotoscoping or the missing tracking tools, neither Premation’s keyframing nor its other documented features remove that limitation.

Is Premation really free, and does it work offline?
Yes: the local desktop edition is described in Premation’s documentation as free and open source under AGPL-3.0. It runs on your machine, requires neither an account nor a network connection, stores projects as .motion bundles and exports without a watermark. Those details apply to the local edition, not automatically to every optional online service.
Premation also offers a hosted edition with cloud projects, sync, hosted rendering and an AI assistant. It is described as free during public beta, with paid plans planned. If you want a fully local workflow, use the desktop edition; cloud features necessarily belong to the hosted service rather than the offline setup.

How new is Premation, and how stable is it?
An independent launch report dates Premation’s Product Hunt launch to July 30, 2026—about two months before October 3, 2026. That makes the “only two months old” description a fair snapshot of its public launch, not a guarantee that the software had no earlier development or testing.
More important than its launch date is its stated maturity: Premation Docs labels version 0.7.0 “public beta.” The documentation also warns that the project format may still change. Treat it as promising pre-1.0 software: test it with a small project before committing important work, and keep backups of project files while the format remains subject to change.

Who should try Premation?
- Try it if you want a free motion graphics editor for macOS or Windows, value editable keyframe curves, or already use After Effects-style shortcuts.
- Consider CapCut instead if your main goal is fast, creator-oriented social-video editing rather than detailed motion design.
- Look beyond Premation for a required feature if your workflow depends on rotoscoping, planar tracking or camera solving.
- Test before relying on it if you plan to use it for important or long-lived projects, because version 0.7.0 is a public beta and the project format may change.
