Prehistoric World 2 currently targets Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. Install it through a launcher that can import CurseForge modpacks, run it on Java 17 or newer, and keep the instance pinned to the 1.20.1 Forge profile. The pack’s progression is built around exploring, finding fossils and reviving extinct creatures. Its quest book is the authority for the objectives and unlock dependencies in the release you actually install; public project information does not provide a reliable chapter-by-chapter reward list.

What Prehistoric World 2 is
Prehistoric World 2 is an exploration-and-progression Minecraft modpack. The author describes a loop of uncovering ancient fossils, reviving long-extinct creatures and exploring worlds that have been lost for millions of years. CurseForge classifies the project under Adventure and RPG, Quests, Multiplayer, Exploration, and Combat/PvP.

That combination matters when you choose how to play. This is not simply a dinosaur-themed collection of decorative blocks. The intended experience mixes discovery, structured objectives and survival or combat decisions. You can pursue the quest book, spend long sessions building a dinosaur park or base, explore with friends, or combine all three.
CurseForge displayed 114,989 downloads for project 1632389 in 2026. That is a point-in-time platform counter, not a review score, active-player count or guarantee that every release is equally stable.

Supported Minecraft version and loader
The current official files listing identifies Prehistoric World 2 – MC 1.20.1 – 7.1.0, uploaded October 8, 2026. The file uses the Forge loader. For a reliable installation, select Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge together; do not combine this pack with files built for another Minecraft version or loader.
| Item | Current information | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pack release | 7.1.0 | Use this release when you want the current official 1.20.1 files listed on October 8, 2026. |
| Minecraft | 1.20.1 | Worlds and mod files are version-sensitive. Keep the instance on 1.20.1. |
| Mod loader | Forge | A Fabric or other-loader profile is not an interchangeable substitute. |
| Java | Java 17 or newer | The supported 1.20.1 build requires a compatible Java runtime. |
MCReference recommends importing the pack into Prism Launcher, Modrinth App or CurseForge App. Whichever launcher you choose, let it resolve the pack’s dependencies instead of manually adding random mod versions.

The safest process is to create a separate instance rather than adding the pack’s mods to an existing profile.
- Install a supported launcher. Use Prism Launcher, Modrinth App or CurseForge App. Keep the launcher itself up to date enough to import a modern CurseForge pack.
- Obtain the official pack ZIP. Select the Prehistoric World 2 file for Minecraft 1.20.1. Do not rename it into a different pack or extract individual mods into another installation.
- Import the ZIP. In your launcher, choose its import or add-instance option, select the downloaded CurseForge ZIP and allow the launcher to read the manifest.
- Let dependencies resolve. The launcher should download the listed mods, Forge components and configuration files. Cancel the process if it proposes a different Minecraft version from 1.20.1.
- Check the profile. Before launching, confirm that the instance says Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge, not a similarly named vanilla, Fabric or older profile.
- Confirm Java. Point the instance at Java 17 or a newer compatible Java installation. If the launcher has automatic Java selection, verify the selected runtime in its instance settings.
- Set memory conservatively. Start with the launcher’s recommended allocation and increase it only if the game reports memory pressure. Giving Minecraft every available gigabyte can make the computer less stable, so leave enough memory for the operating system and other programs.
- Launch a test world. Create a temporary world, walk around for several minutes, open the quest book and check that blocks, entities and menus load normally.
- Create a backup before committing. Once the test succeeds, copy the save or use the launcher’s backup feature before beginning a long-term world.
If the import fails
- Re-download the ZIP if the launcher reports a corrupt archive.
- Check that the file is the CurseForge pack archive, not a screenshot, a server archive or a manually selected mod.
- Remove any duplicate instance with the same name and import into a clean profile.
- Verify that Java 17 or newer is actually selected for this instance; a computer can have several Java installations.
- Read the launcher log for the first dependency or version error. Later “could not load” messages are often consequences of that initial failure.
First launch, world safety and version pinning
Modded worlds can contain blocks, entities and data that vanilla Minecraft does not understand. Treat the save as tied to its exact pack and Minecraft version.
The 6.1.0 release page included this warning: “In this version, bugs have been fixed and mods have been updated. It is not essential to update, but it is highly recommended. Remember to always make a backup of your world, and never change version, if you play in 1.20.1 you must continue in that version.”
Although that note belongs to 6.1.0, the operational advice remains useful for a 1.20.1 world: back up before changing the pack, keep an untouched copy of the previous instance, and do not jump to a different Minecraft version merely because a launcher offers it.
A practical backup routine
- Exit to the title screen and close the launcher so no region files are being written.
- Make a dated copy of the world folder, or use the launcher’s built-in instance backup.
- Keep at least one backup outside the active instance directory.
- After an update, launch the copied world first. Only update the original after the copy opens and you have checked key areas.
- For a server, stop the server cleanly before copying its world and configuration folders.
How progression and quests work
Quests are a core pack category, but the publicly listed project information does not publish chapter names, exact objectives, reward tables or a universal unlock order. Those details can change with a release and should not be inferred from a different version.
Use the in-game quest book in your installed 7.1.0 instance as the source of truth. Dependency lines show which tasks lead to others, while the individual task text identifies the items, locations or actions required by that release.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
A reliable quest-book workflow
- Open the quest book early. Look for the first available task rather than trying to guess the intended technology or dinosaur order.
- Read every dependency line. A locked icon usually means a prerequisite is incomplete, not that the quest is broken.
- Record named materials and locations. Keep a short list in-game or outside the game so exploration trips have a purpose.
- Complete one branch at a time. Finishing a prerequisite can unlock several paths; re-open the book after major objectives.
- Check the reward panel. Rewards are release-specific. Verify what your screen offers before discarding, trading or crafting around an assumed reward.
- Use a backup for uncertain actions. If a quest involves a new machine, creature or dimension, test it in a copied world first.
If an objective appears impossible, confirm that you are viewing the quest book from the same instance and release that created the world. A guide or video for another version may show different names, recipes or unlock conditions.
Reviving dinosaurs without guessing the recipe
The pack’s stated premise includes finding fossils and reviving extinct creatures, but the available official description does not establish a single universal fossil-processing recipe, machine chain, DNA item or creature-by-creature unlock list. Those mechanics must be read from the quests, recipes and tooltips in your installed release.
Recommended Free Tools
You can still plan an efficient revival project:
- Follow the first fossil-related quest. Let its text identify the required excavation, item or location.
- Inspect recipes in the pack’s recipe viewer. Search the exact item name shown by the quest instead of relying on a similarly named vanilla item.
- Build the required processing setup in a controlled area. Leave room for additional machines or storage because progression may expand the chain.
- Prepare a secure habitat. Use a fenced, well-lit area with a gate and a separate containment space before attempting a revival. Keep valuable creatures away from your main storage until you understand their behavior.
- Test with a backup. A copied world lets you check feeding, growth, transport and containment without risking your main save.
- Return to the quest book. A successful revival may unlock the next exploration or husbandry objective.
Do not treat a recipe from another dinosaur mod or an older Prehistoric World release as authoritative. The quest text, recipe viewer and tooltips in your profile are the correct references.
Choosing a play style
| Play style | What it emphasizes | Planning advice |
|---|---|---|
| Solo progression | Quest-directed exploration at your own pace | Keep organized storage and make frequent world backups; one player must gather every prerequisite. |
| Multiplayer progression | Splitting exploration, building and combat duties | Agree on who advances shared quest branches and establish a common base before spreading out. |
| Park or base building | Habitats, exhibits and long-term construction | Reserve expansion space and test creature containment before decorating permanent areas. |
| Freeform discovery | Exploring worlds and finding fossils without following every task immediately | Use the quest book as a reference rather than a strict checklist, but keep track of locked prerequisites. |
| Combat-focused play | Survival encounters and the pack’s combat/PvP elements | Separate combat equipment from valuable fossil-processing supplies and back up before risky expeditions. |
Playing with friends and running a server
A separate 1.0 GB Prehistoric World 2 (Server Pack) — Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge is listed for server use. It is distinct from the client pack: players need the matching 1.20.1 Forge client content, while the server needs the server archive and its own Java 17-or-newer environment.

- Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
- Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
- First player or team to 500 wins.
- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
Server preparation checklist
- Download the server pack that matches the client release and Minecraft version.
- Install Java 17 or newer on the host machine.
- Follow the server pack’s included setup instructions and accept any required Minecraft terms.
- Start the server once to generate its files, then stop it cleanly before editing configuration.
- Have every player install the same Prehistoric World 2 release, Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- Back up the server world before changing mods, configurations or pack versions.
- Test joining locally before opening the server to the internet; firewall, port-forwarding and network details depend on the host and router.
The release page asks whether players need a server and advertises a 25% discount with code “Lupin.” That is a promotional offer whose current terms, geography and availability can change, so treat it as optional and verify the conditions before paying. The existence of the offer does not establish that a particular host is required to run the pack.
Updating safely
Read the changelog for the exact release you intend to install. A launcher may present updates automatically, but accepting one changes the mod files and can alter world data.
- Write down the current pack version and Minecraft/Forge versions.
- Close the game and make a complete world backup.
- Duplicate the entire instance if your launcher supports it.
- Install the target release in the duplicate, keeping Minecraft on 1.20.1.
- Open the duplicated world and inspect your base, storage, quests and animal areas.
- Only migrate the live world after the test is successful; keep the old copy until you are satisfied.
Never solve a mod-loading problem by moving a 1.20.1 world to an unrelated Minecraft version. Roll back to the previous instance and backup, identify the incompatible file, and seek a release intended for the same version.
Troubleshooting common problems
The launcher selects the wrong Minecraft version
Edit the instance and explicitly choose Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. Remove conflicting profiles so you do not launch a similarly named instance by mistake.
Best Value
The game crashes before the main menu
Confirm Java 17 or newer, then inspect the first error in the log. Re-importing into a clean instance often fixes a partially downloaded dependency. Do not add individual mods from another pack to “fill” a missing dependency.
A quest is locked or has no visible reward
Follow its dependency lines and verify that the prerequisite was completed in the same world. Reward details are release-specific; use the installed quest screen rather than a video or list made for another version.
A revived creature escapes or damages a build
Restore the pre-revival backup if necessary, then test the creature in a copied world. Expand the enclosure, add a controlled entry area and keep the next revival away from irreplaceable builds until its behavior is known.
Friends cannot join
Check that clients and server use the same pack release, Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. Confirm that the server is running, the host firewall permits the chosen port and the address being shared is reachable from outside the local network.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Use the October 8, 2026 release 7.1.0 with Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- Run the supported build on Java 17 or newer.
- Import the official ZIP through a modpack-aware launcher and let it resolve dependencies.
- Use the in-game quest book for exact objectives, rewards and unlock order; public listings do not provide a dependable quest table.
- Plan dinosaur revivals from the recipes and instructions shown in your installed instance, not from another mod or version.
- Back up before updates and keep a 1.20.1 world on 1.20.1.
- For multiplayer, use the matching 1.0 GB server pack and require every player to run the same client release.
