Precision tracking radar is best understood as a radar capability, not a standardized class with one universal accuracy threshold. It provides continuing data about selected targets over time: a radar must first acquire a target, then maintain measurements useful for tracking. What those measurements contain—and how precise they are—depends on the radar and its operating conditions.
What does precision tracking radar mean?
The phrase describes radar used to maintain target-related information over time. The UK Ministry of Defence describes tracking radars as serving applications that need “a continuous flow of target data concerning discrete targets.” The exact phrase “precision tracking radar” does not have a single technical definition or universal precision threshold established by the sources cited here.

For developers, the essential distinction is between a current observation and a maintained track. A detection is evidence of a target in a measurement; tracking uses observations over time to keep information associated with that target. The measurement is not automatically a perfect or complete target state.
What does a tracking radar measure?
Measurements vary with radar type. The Ministry of Defence states that pulse-radar tracking data consists of angle and range information, while continuous-wave (CW) radar tracking data consists of angle and velocity information. Other systems may provide additional contact fields to downstream users.

For example, the U.S. Navy’s AN/SPS-49(V) radar fact file describes contact data including range, azimuth, amplitude, radial velocity, and an associated confidence factor, for tracking and command-and-control systems. This is a system-specific example, not a standard interface schema for all radar.
How does a radar acquire and keep tracking a target?
Acquisition comes first
Before it can track a target, a radar has to acquire it. The Ministry of Defence describes two routes: the radar can receive initial target coordinates from another source, or it can find the target through its own scanning search mode. A narrow tracking beam may not be suitable for searching a large angular volume, so acquisition and sustained tracking need not use the same approach.

Measurements are maintained over time
After acquisition, a tracking radar continues to produce target data. The Ministry of Defence describes angle tracking through antenna pointing and control signals, range tracking through an electronic range gate synchronized to echo pulses, and velocity tracking through a tuned oscillator linked to the selected Doppler echo. These are descriptions of tracking techniques, not a claim that every system implements the same design.

“Precision” is not one number that can be compared independently of measurement type and operating conditions. Resolution, signal return, and a system’s stated accuracy are related but distinct considerations. A meaningful specification should identify the metric, configuration, and conditions behind it.

In its version 12.8.2 modeling documentation, AGI/STK’s Search/Track Radar model bases range resolution on pulse width and bandwidth, and azimuth resolution on antenna beamwidth. Its modeled point-target return depends on range and radar cross section; the documentation describes the range relationship as proportional to the fourth power of range and the return as directly dependent on radar cross section. These are relationships in that model, not a substitute for a particular radar’s performance specification under operating conditions.
The same documentation describes its continuous-wave radar model as using a continuously active transmitter, frequency modulation to resolve range, and integration over a continuous time period. That description should not be generalized to every radar waveform or configuration.

- Measurement dimensions: identify whether the system reports range, angle, velocity or Doppler, or a combination.
- Acquisition: establish whether targets are found by onboard search or supplied by an external cue.
- Resolution and signal conditions: check the relevant pulse, bandwidth, antenna, range, and target-return assumptions.
- Track interface: determine which contact fields and confidence or quality indicators are available to downstream systems.
- Mission context: compare systems only when their missions and operating conditions align.
How do operational examples clarify the capability?
The Navy’s AN/SPS-49(V) example shows why a downstream consumer may need more than a position: contact data can include amplitude, radial velocity, and a confidence factor alongside range and azimuth. The fields describe that radar’s interface, not a universal set.

How should developers evaluate a tracking-radar interface?
Start with the consumer’s needs rather than assuming that every radar supplies the same state estimate. Confirm what each reported quantity means, what acquisition process precedes the track, and whether quality information accompanies the contact data. Treat resolution, signal-return modeling, and system accuracy as separate evidence; do not infer a universal precision figure from one model or operational example.
