Precision physics compares a measured observable with a calculation precise enough that a small mismatch is informative. The mismatch may expose an experimental systematic, an incomplete calculation or physics beyond the Standard Model; it becomes evidence for a changed theory only after independent checks and updated inputs survive.
The method matters because new particles can be too heavy to produce directly. Their virtual effects can still shift quantities such as the W-boson mass, the muon’s magnetic anomaly or atomic energy levels by amounts that careful experiments can detect.

What precision physics actually tests
Precision physics is not simply taking more decimal places. It is a matched comparison: experiment measures an observable, theory predicts the same observable, and both sides have uncertainty budgets small enough to discriminate between explanations. If the experimental error is large, a predicted difference is invisible. If the theoretical error is larger than the measurement error, the comparison is equally inconclusive.
The Standard Model remains extraordinarily successful. CERN describes it as a framework that has “successfully explained almost all experimental results and precisely predicted a wide variety of phenomena.” It is nevertheless tested one observable at a time. A theory can fit thousands of measurements and still fail in a narrow, sensitive quantity.

Why indirect searches work
A collider does not need to create a new particle for that particle to matter. In quantum field theory, undiscovered heavy particles can appear in loops that alter the relationship among particles we can produce. The resulting shift is usually tiny, but a precisely known observable can amplify its significance by testing a relationship that the Standard Model fixes tightly.
That logic also applies outside colliders. Spectroscopy, trapped-particle measurements and mass-ratio comparisons test quantum electrodynamics, atomic structure and fundamental constants at low energy, with systematics that differ from those in a high-energy detector.

- What observable was measured, with what data set and method?
- Which uncertainties dominate the result, and are they statistical, experimental or theoretical?
- Which external inputs enter the prediction, and how are their correlations treated?
- Do independent analyses reproduce the value?
- Is the observable controlled mainly by a directly measured parameter, or is it sensitive to quantum-loop effects?
- Could a proposed class of new physics shift the result without conflicting with other measurements?
A single outlying number can result from calibration, an unmodeled background, an omitted higher-order term or an incorrect correlation. Precision physics changes a theory only when those possibilities are tested and the discrepancy remains.
Case study: why the W-boson mass matters
The electroweak relationship
The W and Z bosons are linked by the Standard Model’s electroweak structure. Their masses are not independent free numbers once other electroweak inputs are specified. Quantum loops involving heavy particles modify that relationship, so a sufficiently precise W-mass measurement can act as an indirect search for particles too heavy to produce.
The sensitivity is a consistency test, not a claim that every difference is new physics. The W-mass prediction depends on the global electroweak fit and on inputs such as the top-quark and Higgs-boson masses. ATLAS describes the W mass as connected to those masses, while CMS emphasizes that undiscovered heavy particles could alter the relationship through loops.

What CMS measured
Using its 2016 LHC data sample, CMS reported a W-boson mass of 80,360.2 ± 9.9 MeV. CMS says this result agrees with the Standard Model prediction. The quoted uncertainty belongs to that measurement and data set; it is not a universal uncertainty for every W-mass determination.

The cited global electroweak fit predicts the W mass with a 6 MeV uncertainty. Comparing numbers at this level requires detector calibration, theory inputs and correlated uncertainties to be handled together. A result that looks different from one prediction can move when the fit inputs or correlations are updated.
How to read a W-mass headline
First identify whether the article is discussing one experiment, a combination of experiments or a global fit. Then check the data-taking period, calibration procedure and theory prediction used. An isolated shift is a prompt for cross-checks; a persistent shift across independent measurements and fits would be a stronger case for modifying the electroweak theory.

Case study: the muon anomalous magnetic moment
What g−2 compares
The muon anomalous magnetic moment, usually written a_mu, compares a measured magnetic anomaly with a Standard Model calculation. The prediction combines electromagnetic, weak and hadronic contributions. Improving the experiment alone is not enough: the hadronic part of the calculation must be controlled at comparable precision.
The 2025 status
A 2025 theory update compared the current experimental average—combining the earlier E821 experiment with Fermilab E989 runs 1–6—with the Standard Model value. It reported a_mu(exp) − a_mu(SM) = 38(63) × 10^-11 and stated that this implies no tension between experiment and the Standard Model at the current precision.

Earlier headlines described a multi-sigma anomaly, but those claims are historical context rather than the current cited consensus. Updated theory calculations and the combined data set changed the comparison. A future result could change the status again, which is why both experimental and theoretical updates matter.

Case study: atomic measurements and fundamental constants
NIST’s Fundamental Constants program shows that precision tests are not confined to proton collisions. Its inputs include atomic-hydrogen energy levels, the free-electron g factor, laser-cooled rubidium and cesium masses, and atom-to-atom and electron-to-carbon mass ratios.
These measurements constrain constants such as the fine-structure constant, the electron mass and Newtonian gravitational constant G. Comparing an atomic measurement with quantum-electrodynamic or atomic-structure calculations can reveal an inconsistency in the theory, a problem in an input constant or a possible departure from the Standard Model. The energy scale is low, but the fractional precision can be exceptional.
How the major precision tests differ
| Test | Observable and setting | Main sensitivity | Key uncertainty issue |
|---|---|---|---|
| W-boson mass | Electroweak mass measured at a collider | Consistency of W–Z relationships; virtual heavy-particle effects | Detector calibration, global-fit inputs and correlated uncertainties |
| Muon g−2 | Muon magnetic anomaly from storage-ring experiments | Electromagnetic, weak and hadronic loop contributions | Experimental average and theoretical hadronic contributions must improve together |
| Atomic and mass-ratio measurements | Spectroscopy, trapped particles and precision mass comparisons | Quantum electrodynamics, atomic structure and fundamental constants | Atomic theory, frequency or mass standards and independent constant inputs |
The W-mass measurement is primarily an electroweak consistency test. Muon g−2 is explicitly loop-sensitive. Atomic measurements provide low-energy tests with different instruments and systematic errors, making them complementary rather than interchangeable.
When does a measurement justify changing the theory?
- Define the comparison. State the observable, the measured value, its uncertainty, the data set or apparatus and the exact theoretical prediction.
- Audit the experimental budget. Check calibration, stability, backgrounds, reconstruction choices and statistical assumptions. Reanalyze the data with independent methods where possible.
- Audit the theory budget. Include missing higher-order terms, hadronic or nuclear inputs and uncertainties in external parameters. Do not compare a high-precision measurement with a lower-precision calculation as if the latter were exact.
- Propagate correlations. Shared calibration constants, data sets or theory inputs can make two apparently independent results less independent than they look.
- Seek replication and combinations. A discrepancy that persists across experiments, methods and data-taking periods is more informative than a single outlier.
- Test alternatives. Ask whether the same effect appears in other observables and whether a proposed new interaction is compatible with existing constraints.
What counts as a responsible conclusion
The strongest defensible wording is usually that a measurement is consistent with the Standard Model, in tension with it at a stated precision, or motivates further tests. “Proves new physics” is not justified by one deviation. Precision physics is a process of eliminating ordinary explanations until a theory-level discrepancy is the most economical remaining interpretation.
How to evaluate future claims
When a new result is announced, record the number and uncertainty before reading the interpretation. Check whether the uncertainty is experimental, theoretical or combined; whether the comparison uses the latest global inputs; and whether the result supersedes an older measurement or merely adds another data set. For W mass, ask whether the statement concerns a single experiment or a global fit. For muon g−2, check which theory evaluation and which experimental runs are included. For atomic constants, identify the standard and the independent measurements entering the comparison.
This discipline explains why a tiny shift can matter enormously: a tightly constrained relationship leaves little room for error, so even a small, reproducible departure can reveal where the theory’s assumptions stop working. Equally, a shift that disappears after calibration or a better calculation teaches something valuable about the measurement itself without requiring a new particle or a new law.
