What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Neither a prebuilt gaming PC nor a do-it-yourself build is always cheaper. The right choice depends on the exact parts and local prices—and on how much you value ready-to-use convenience, support, and control over the components. Compare equivalent systems, including software and setup costs, before deciding.
Which option costs less?
There is no dependable rule that DIY is always cheaper or that prebuilt systems always cost more. Component availability, demand, and volume discounts can shift the result. Intel recommends comparing equivalent configurations rather than relying on a broad category-level price claim: Intel’s prebuilt-versus-custom PC guide.

HP’s 2026 guide estimates a typical prebuilt premium of 10–20% over equivalent individual parts, including a Windows license. That is HP’s estimate, not a universal market result. HP also places a typical gaming PC at $1,200–$2,200 in 2026, but that vendor-published range is not a current price check for every country or performance tier. Treat both figures as context, not as a substitute for comparing the systems you can actually buy: HP’s 2026 gaming PC cost guide.
Build a fair comparison
Compare the exact CPU and GPU first, then check the rest of the configuration. Similar headline processor and graphics-card names do not guarantee equivalent memory, cooling, power delivery, expansion, or overall value.

- Use current prices in your country for each part, and include any discounts that apply.
- For DIY, account for the operating system if needed, shipping, and any assembly or setup costs.
- For a prebuilt, check which parts are actually installed rather than assuming the product description covers every important detail.
- Compare the warranty and support terms alongside the price; a single service contact may be worth paying for.
HP estimates that the GPU can account for 30–40% of a build’s total cost. This is HP’s estimate, not an audited market statistic, but it underscores why a cost comparison needs to match graphics performance rather than just the total price: HP’s cost guide.
What does a prebuilt buy you?
A prebuilt arrives assembled and is generally the more direct route to a ready-to-use computer. Depending on the system, the operating system may be included, and the maker may provide a warranty and support channel. Those details vary, so check the specific system’s inclusions and written coverage before buying. HP and MSI describe convenience and support as part of the prebuilt proposition, while emphasizing that actual terms depend on the product: HP and MSI.

The trade-off is reduced control over the choice of every component. Check the motherboard, power supply, memory configuration, storage, cooling, and case as carefully as the CPU and GPU. If a listing does not identify a part that matters to your plans, ask the seller or consult the exact model’s specifications before assuming it is upgradeable.
What does building your own involve?
DIY lets you choose the components and how the machine is designed. In exchange, you take on compatibility checks, assembly, operating-system setup, and more of the troubleshooting if something does not work as expected. Intel and CORSAIR both describe that control-versus-effort trade-off in their guides: Intel and CORSAIR.

Check the whole parts list
- CPU and motherboard: Confirm the processor is supported by the board and check what CPU upgrades the board and platform can support.
- Memory: Check the board’s supported memory and the number of occupied and available slots.
- Storage: Confirm the type of drive and the number of available M.2 slots or drive bays.
- Power supply: Check its capacity, required connectors, and whether it can support the graphics card you plan to use.
- GPU, case, and cooling: Check graphics-card length and thickness against case clearance, plus the cooling and airflow needed for the chosen components.
DIY is a better fit when choosing each part and learning through the build are worth the extra time and responsibility to you—not simply because you expect it to be cheaper.

Sometimes. Upgradeability depends on the particular model, not just whether it is sold as a prebuilt. MSI puts it plainly: “A common concern has always been upgradeability. Can you upgrade a prebuilt PC? The answer is – it depends on the manufacturer.” Check the actual design and specifications before buying: MSI’s guide to choosing a gaming PC.

For a future graphics-card upgrade, check the power supply’s capacity and connectors, the card’s physical dimensions, and case clearance. For a processor or memory change, check motherboard compatibility, supported CPUs and memory, and available slots. Also look for proprietary connections or a nonstandard layout that could limit replacements. A prebuilt can use standard components; its category label alone does not establish how easy it is to upgrade. A 2021 TechSpot comparison illustrates that constraints can vary by OEM model, but it should not be used as evidence about current prices or recommendations for today’s specific PCs: TechSpot’s 2021 comparison.
Is there a middle option?
A custom-configured PC from a system integrator can let you choose more of the components without assembling the machine yourself. It sits between selecting and building every part independently and buying a fixed configuration. Check the final parts list, price, warranty, and support terms just as you would for a prebuilt, since the amount of choice and service varies by seller. Intel discusses custom-built systems alongside prebuilt and DIY options: Intel’s comparison guide.
Quick Recap
How to choose
- Choose a prebuilt if you want an assembled, ready-to-use system and value having one support contact, provided its exact components and warranty check out.
- Choose DIY if selecting every part, learning the process, and controlling the design matter more than avoiding assembly and troubleshooting.
- Consider an integrator if you want more say over the parts but do not want to assemble the PC yourself.
