If your team already uses Playwright Test, start with its built-in toHaveScreenshot() assertion: it creates reference screenshots on the initial run and compares later runs against them. Accept a new baseline only after deciding the visual change is intentional.
What visual testing catches—and what it does not
A visual test takes a screenshot at a deliberate checkpoint and compares it with a stored reference. Differences flag a change for review; they do not, by themselves, establish whether the change is a defect. A visual comparison can reveal unexpected movement, missing content, clipping, typography shifts, or styling changes that a behavior assertion may not catch.
Visual checks complement rather than replace functional tests. Keep assertions for what the interface does, and use screenshots to check how important states appear. Playwright recommends focusing on user-visible behavior and isolated tests in its Best Practices.
Build a reliable visual testing workflow
1. Choose meaningful screens and states
Identify user-visible states worth protecting, such as a key page after data loads or an important interaction state. Exercise the interface to reach each state before capturing it; arbitrary snapshots are less useful than checkpoints tied to behavior. Applitools describes the general cycle as exercising the UI, capturing key states, comparing them with baselines, reviewing differences, and saving approved updates in its visual UI testing overview.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Create and review the initial baseline
In Playwright Test, the first run of a screenshot assertion generates its reference screenshot. Inspect the output to confirm that it represents the appearance you intend to protect, then commit the reference files as part of the project workflow. A baseline is an accepted expectation, not proof that the page is correct.
3. Keep the rendering conditions consistent
Screenshot output can change with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends running comparisons in the same environment used to generate the baselines; references should not be assumed to be portable across machines or browsers. If particular browsers or viewport sizes matter to your product, define those test projects deliberately and maintain appropriate references for them. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.
4. Review every difference as a decision
- If the appearance change is intended, review it and update the baseline to reflect the approved design.
- If it is unexpected, keep the old baseline while investigating the cause. Check for changed layout, missing or clipped content, typography, and styles.
- Do not treat a failing comparison as a reason to update snapshots automatically. The update should follow a decision that the new result is desired.
5. Run the checks in CI
Run visual tests routinely in continuous integration. Playwright recommends running tests frequently, ideally on each commit and pull request. Consistent CI conditions also make comparisons easier to interpret than a mixture of local environments.
6. Add accessibility checks and human assessment
Automated accessibility scans can detect some common issues, but they are not a complete accessibility evaluation. Playwright notes that many accessibility problems require manual testing in its Accessibility testing guidance. Pair automated checks with manual assessment and, where appropriate, testing with users with disabilities.

Use Playwright Test screenshot assertions
Playwright Test documents screenshot comparison through await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). For example, a test can navigate to a page and compare its rendered state:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home-page.png');
});
Replace the example URL and name with your own page and checkpoint. A named image makes the expected state explicit. The initial run creates the reference; later runs compare the captured result with it. Playwright waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before saving an initial reference, which helps avoid capturing a still-changing frame. PNG is the default snapshot format; lossless WebP snapshots are also documented.
Update references intentionally
After reviewing an intentional appearance change, run:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review the changed screenshots before committing them. The command updates references; it cannot decide whether a visual change is acceptable.

Control noise without hiding real regressions
Playwright offers comparison configuration including maxDiffPixels, and a stylePath option for applying CSS during screenshot capture. A stylesheet can hide narrowly chosen volatile regions. Use filtering only where content is genuinely dynamic: hiding broad areas can also conceal meaningful regressions. The documented configuration example of maxDiffPixels: 100 is an example, not a universal recommended tolerance. Choose comparison settings based on the screenshots and changes your team needs to detect.
When to use a hosted visual review service
Built-in Playwright snapshots are a practical starting point when stored references in the project and the existing code review workflow meet the team’s needs. A hosted service may be worth evaluating when the team needs a centralized visual review workflow or collaboration beyond managing reference images in the project.

Comparisons differ between machines
Rendering conditions may differ across operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, power sources, or headless mode. Run baseline and comparison captures in the same environment where practical, and define browser or viewport projects intentionally.
A snapshot changes because the page is still settling
Make the test reach the intended state before the assertion. Playwright’s initial screenshot routine waits for two consecutive screenshots to match, but the test still needs to navigate and exercise the interface to the right checkpoint.

A real change is obscured by a noisy region
Apply screenshot CSS through stylePath only to hide specific volatile content. Revisit the rule if the hidden region contains user-visible changes that should be tested.

Many differences appear after a design update
Review the diffs and decide which changes are intentional before using npx playwright test --update-snapshots. Updating references is appropriate for approved changes, not as routine cleanup for unexplained failures.
Frequently asked questions
Should visual tests replace functional tests?
No. They answer different questions: screenshots compare appearance, while functional assertions check behavior.
Can a screenshot baseline be shared across browsers and operating systems?
Do not assume so. Browser and host conditions can affect rendering; keep conditions consistent or maintain references for the environments you intentionally test.
