Instead of navigating an entire application to reach a particular state, you can render a component with chosen props or mock data, save that state as a story, and revisit it during development, testing, or documentation.
What Storybook is—and what a story represents
Storybook describes itself as “a frontend workshop for building UI components and pages in isolation.” It is open-source software that runs alongside your application. Its purpose is to make UI states easier to build, inspect, and share without first running the whole application through the steps needed to reach them.
A story is a saved description of a rendered UI state. It typically supplies inputs such as component props and mock data. A component can have several stories: for example, a button might have a default state, a disabled state, and a state with longer text. The stories make those variations directly selectable rather than dependent on navigating through the app.
Storybook is not a replacement for the application or its business logic. It gives developers a focused place to work on the interface; completed components and pages still need to be connected to the real data and behavior in the application.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How the component-driven workflow works
Storybook documents a component-driven approach, but teams can adapt it to their needs. A practical progression is:
- Choose a component and its meaningful states. Start with a small interface element or a page section. Consider the normal state as well as important variations and edge cases.
- Render it in isolation. Provide the props or mock data needed to see the state without navigating the full application.
- Save useful states as stories. Name each story so teammates can understand what it demonstrates and select it again later.
- Build up from smaller pieces. Compose component stories into more complex components and, where useful, page-level stories.
- Connect the finished UI to the application. Integrate real data and business logic in the app rather than treating mock inputs in a story as production behavior.
- Reuse the stories where they help. Stories can support review, documentation, and appropriate UI tests, so the same documented state does not have to be recreated separately for every workflow.
This is an approach, not a mandatory sequence. Storybook describes its workflow as incrementally adoptable, and a team can begin with the components or states that are hardest to reach in its application.

Install Storybook in your project
The official getting-started instructions give this command for adding Storybook to an existing project or creating a project from scratch:
npm create storybook@latest
The installer offers framework integrations, including React, Next.js, React Native Web, Preact, Vue, Angular, Svelte, and Web Components. Setup and capabilities are not necessarily identical across integrations; follow the current official instructions for your exact framework and project rather than assuming one framework’s configuration applies to another.

After setup, Storybook’s interface separates the Manager from the Preview. The Manager contains story search and navigation, toolbars, and addons. Selecting a story renders it in an isolated Preview iframe. The interface also includes a testing widget, with feedback and debugging workflows for interaction tests, accessibility checks, and visual tests. The browse-stories guide documents F6 and Shift+F6 for moving between major interface regions.
Stories, tests, and choosing companion tools
Stories provide concrete UI states that can be used as a starting point for testing, but Storybook does not make every test tool interchangeable. Choose a tool according to what you need to verify and how your team works:

| Need | Tools or workflow named by Storybook | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Interaction behavior | Storybook interaction testing; Jest or Vitest with Testing Library | Decide whether you need feedback while exploring a story, reusable tests in your existing test setup, or both. |
| Accessibility checks | Storybook accessibility workflows; Axe | Use accessibility checks to find issues in rendered UI; they complement, rather than replace, other testing. |
| Visual review | Visual testing with Chromatic | Consider whether the team needs visual feedback and shared review of changes to stories. |
| End-to-end user flows | Playwright or Cypress | Use these for application-level flows; isolated component stories address a different scope. |
These are separate integrations or companion tools, not one bundled product category. Check each tool’s compatibility with your framework and CI environment, whether you need local feedback or shared review, and whether stories can be reused in the workflow. Storybook names these tools and use cases but does not establish a universal ranking among them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Documentation, addons, and sharing
Storybook can generate documentation alongside stories, helping teams explain component usage and maintain a searchable catalog of UI patterns. This is useful for a component library or design system, but the quality of the guidance still depends on the information the team provides.

Addons extend Storybook with features or integrations. Examples in its addon introduction include documentation, accessibility testing, and interactive controls. Choose addons for a specific need rather than assuming every project should use the same set.
A published Storybook can give teammates and stakeholders a place to inspect UI behavior and provide feedback. Storybook also describes embedding stories in collaboration spaces such as wikis, Markdown, and Figma. This can make review easier without confusing a reviewable UI state with a fully integrated production feature.
Capture a published Storybook page with ScreenshotNeo
Storybook helps you build and inspect UI states; it is not a screenshot API. If you want a screenshot or PDF of a published Storybook page, you can capture its URL separately. Keep the Storybook workflow for component development, and use a capture service when you need an image or PDF artifact.
Or skip the browser setup
For a published page, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in a single GET request and returns a screenshot or PDF. The example below saves a WebP response; replace the target URL with the published Storybook page you want to capture and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is available on every plan.

Quick Recap
Common setup and workflow snags
- The setup command does not configure the project as expected: integrations differ, and community-maintained integrations may have different support characteristics. Confirm that you are following the current instructions for the framework and project you actually use.
- A story does not match the state in the app: check the story’s props and mock data. A story describes the inputs for an isolated render; it does not automatically reproduce application data or business logic.
- A needed variation is hard to find: create a distinct story for that meaningful state and give it a clear name. Stories are intended to make component variations repeatable and selectable.
- You need to verify a complete user journey: an isolated story is not the whole application flow. Use a suitable end-to-end tool such as Playwright or Cypress for that scope, alongside component-level workflows where useful.
- Testing feedback is missing from the interface: confirm that the relevant testing integration or addon is configured. Storybook’s interface can display testing feedback, but the named testing tools are companion integrations, not automatically enabled features in every setup.
