To append text to a file in PowerShell without replacing what is already there, use Add-Content:
Add-Content -Path .file.txt -Value 'Text to append'It can also append dates or pipeline output, create a target file that does not exist, and control details such as newlines and encoding. The right encoding behavior depends on your PowerShell version and the existing file.

How do you append text to a file in PowerShell?
Use Add-Content with a path and a value. For example, this adds a line of text to notes.txt while preserving its existing content:

Add-Content -Path .notes.txt -Value 'Build completed'Microsoft describes the cmdlet as appending content to a specified item or file. If the target file does not exist, the documented examples show that Add-Content creates it.

Append dates or output from another command
Append a date
Pass an expression as the value. Add -PassThru if you also want the added content returned to the pipeline, where it can be displayed or used by another command:
Add-Content -Path .run.log -Value (Get-Date) -PassThruWithout -PassThru, Add-Content produces no output by default.

Append file or command output
Pipe output to the cmdlet to append it to another file:
Get-Content -Path .source.txt | Add-Content -Path .archive.txtObjects sent through the pipeline are converted to strings before being written. The resulting text depends on the object’s string representation; it may not match the way that object looks when PowerShell formats it for display.

Choose the right path and newline behavior
- Use
-Pathwhen you want wildcard matching, such as selecting multiple files with a pattern. - Use
-LiteralPathwhen the path includes characters that PowerShell could interpret as wildcards and you mean those characters literally. - Use
-NoNewlinewhen the appended value should not be followed by a newline. When this switch is used, multiple object string representations are concatenated without spaces or newline characters between them.
Preview an operation or handle a read-only file
To preview the intended action without carrying it out, add -WhatIf:
Add-Content -Path .notes.txt -Value 'Build completed' -WhatIf-Force can override a file’s read-only attribute, but it does not change the file’s permissions. Microsoft also notes that -Credential is not supported by installed providers; its cmdlet reference points to Invoke-Command for impersonation or elevation scenarios.

Understand encoding before appending
Encoding defaults differ by PowerShell version and target file. Microsoft’s Windows PowerShell 5.1 guidance says that, when no encoding is specified, Add-Content detects and uses the encoding of an existing file. If that file has no byte-order mark (BOM), the documented fallback is Default, meaning the active system locale’s legacy ANSI code page. For an empty or nonexistent file, Windows PowerShell 5.1 also uses Default.
The same guidance says PowerShell 6 and later retain the existing-file behavior but use UTF-8 for an empty or nonexistent target. The PowerShell 7.6 cmdlet reference lists utf8NoBOM as the default and documents alternatives including utf8, utf8BOM, and unicode. It also notes that ansi was added in PowerShell 7.4, while code-page IDs or names have been accepted since PowerShell 6.2.

When you need a particular encoding, specify it explicitly. For instance:
Add-Content -Path .notes.txt -Value 'Résumé updated' -Encoding utf8Choose an encoding that fits the target file and the programs that will read it. Specifying an encoding is not a substitute for checking existing file bytes when compatibility matters.
