PowerPoint Photo Slideshow vs. Google Slides: Which Should You Use?

Google Slides suits shared, Drive-based photo presentations; PowerPoint desktop is the stronger documented option for unattended playback and video or PPSX export.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Google Slides when you want to build and share a photo presentation in a browser, collaborate in Drive, and let it save as you work. Choose PowerPoint desktop when you need a presentation to run unattended, more desktop picture controls, or an exported video or PowerPoint Show file. Both can handle a straightforward photo deck; the better fit depends on how you’ll edit and deliver it.

Quick comparison

Need Google Slides PowerPoint
Create a photo deck Add images from a computer, Google Drive, Google Photos, or the web. Google’s guide describes image insertion. Picture insertion is listed across desktop, web, and mobile. Some picture controls vary by platform. Microsoft’s feature comparison is a platform guide, not a guarantee for every license or update.
Save and collaborate Work saves automatically in Drive. Offline editing requires setup and making files available offline. Google explains the setup. Real-time co-authoring is listed for PC, web, Mac, and iOS. Microsoft’s cloud workflow uses OneDrive or SharePoint. See Microsoft’s comparison.
Unattended playback The cited Google documentation does not establish a comparable self-running presentation feature. Self-running presentations are listed for PowerPoint on PC and Mac, but not for PowerPoint for the web or the listed mobile apps. Check the platform matrix.
Deliver as a video or slideshow file Recording is available on some Workspace plans, but the cited source does not establish a general MP4 export workflow. Google’s Slides information describes plan-dependent features. Supported desktop releases document MP4 and WMV export, plus the PPSX slideshow format. Microsoft explains export options.
Continue a PowerPoint deck Slides can open and edit an Office presentation or convert it. Inspect complex effects and media after opening; the cited Google documentation does not promise that every element transfers perfectly. Google’s Office-file guide covers opening and editing. Keeping the deck in PowerPoint is the natural option when its behavior depends on PowerPoint-specific effects or media.

Choose based on how you’ll make and share the slideshow

Choose Google Slides for a shared, Drive-based workflow

Slides is a sensible default if you and your collaborators already use Google Drive and want to edit in a browser. Google says anyone with a Google Account can create in Slides. It saves as you work, and you can add images from a computer, Drive, Google Photos, or the web. Google’s product page describes account access and features; its help guide covers saving and image insertion.

Offline editing is not automatic: enable offline access in Drive settings and mark the files you need as available offline. Google’s instructions explain those steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose PowerPoint desktop for unattended playback or export

If the slideshow must run on its own at an event, kiosk, or display, PowerPoint desktop is the better-supported choice in the cited platform comparison. Microsoft lists self-running presentations for PC and Mac, but not for PowerPoint for the web or the mobile versions shown. Picture compression is also listed for PC and Mac, not web or mobile. Confirm the capabilities for your platform.

Open a PowerPoint slideshow in Google Slides

Google supports opening a PowerPoint file from Drive with Slides and either editing the Office file or converting it. For a simple deck, this can make it easier to work with Google-account collaborators. For a deck that relies on animations, transitions, embedded media, or other PowerPoint-specific behavior, test a copy and review the actual presentation before using it. The cited Google guidance establishes opening and editing, not perfect fidelity for every effect or media element. Read Google’s Office-file instructions.

Check feature and account limits before you decide

PowerPoint’s feature matrix covers multiple platforms and is explicitly non-comprehensive; check your edition and device instead of assuming the desktop feature set applies to web or mobile. Microsoft’s comparison lists co-authoring on PC, web, Mac, and iOS, but lists self-running presentations only on PC and Mac.

Some Google Slides recording and speaker spotlight features depend on eligible Workspace plans, and Gemini’s “help me visualize” capability is an add-on. Google identifies some Meet and recording features as available on some Business and Enterprise plans; eligibility should be checked for the account and region. Consult Google’s current feature information. Current prices and exact plan entitlements are not established here, so do not assume a feature is included in a particular account.
