It boosts a moving minecart; an unpowered powered rail slows the cart and can stop it. A cart sitting still on a level rail will not automatically launch, so give it an initial push, a slope, rider input, or another source of motion.
Craft a powered rail
Put six gold ingots in the left and right columns of a crafting grid, a stick in the center, and redstone dust in the bottom-center slot. The recipe makes six powered rails. A sample from A Minecraft Mini-Encyclopedia shows this recipe.

Place and power the rail

Lay powered rails along the route where you want to accelerate a minecart. They connect to ordinary rails as track.

Give each powered section a redstone power source. For a simple always-on booster, place a redstone torch beside or beneath the rail, or use a lever or redstone block. Power can reach a rail from adjacent positions; connected powered rails can also carry power along a limited run. See the Minecraft Wiki minecart tutorial for the rail-power details.

Start the cart moving before it reaches the powered rail. Push it, ride and provide input, use a sloped approach, or arrange a block at the end to set it in motion. The powered rail adds momentum to a cart already moving; it is not a universal launch button.
Choose a simple or controllable setup

Minecraft distinguishes powered rails from detector rails and activator rails: powered rails accelerate minecarts, detector rails send a redstone signal when a cart passes, and activator rails activate carts that travel over them. What happens when a powered rail is off?
An unpowered powered rail acts as a brake. It slows a cart, and one or more inactive rails may stop it depending on its speed and the track. If you want a cart to stop reliably at a station, test the arrangement with the cart and route you actually use rather than assuming one inactive rail will stop every cart.
Space powered rails for your cart and track
There is no interval that guarantees the same speed on every route. On level track, the Minecraft Wiki tutorial gives these examples as starting guidance:

| Empty utility cart on level track | One powered rail per 27 blocks |
| Full utility cart | More frequent powered rails are needed; the tutorial does not give a single interval here. |
These are examples, not a promise of a particular speed. Cart load, starting speed, uphill or downhill sections, and the speed you want all affect the result. Uphill routes generally need closer boosters than level routes; test the full cart on the finished track and add powered rails where it loses too much speed. The older Pearson sample also describes one powered rail for every 38 regular rails as a commonly used pattern, but it should not be treated as a rule for every cart or track.

Test the route before relying on it

If the cart does not accelerate, check that the rail is receiving redstone power and that the cart is already moving when it reaches it.

If the cart slows or stops unexpectedly, check for an unpowered powered rail and add power or adjust the section’s redstone control.

If the cart loses too much speed between boosters, shorten the spacing, especially for a loaded cart or an uphill section.

If a station should stop carts, test it at the speeds and with the loads expected on that route; braking depends on speed and track conditions.
