Postman vs Insomnia vs Bruno: Which API Client Fits Your Workflow in 2026?

No API client wins for everyone. Postman suits hosted platform needs, Bruno suits local Git-based workflows, and Insomnia offers storage choice.

No one of these three is best for everyone. The better question is where you want your API requests to live. Postman suits teams that want a broad, hosted API platform. Bruno suits developers who want collections as plain-text files reviewed through Git. Insomnia suits people who want to choose between local, Git, and cloud storage. The sections below explain each distinction and what we could and couldn’t establish from vendor material.

The quick decision

If this matters most… Look at Why
Hosted workspaces, documentation, monitoring, and wider API lifecycle features Postman Postman describes a platform covering testing, workspaces, documentation, monitoring, and security options.
Readable local files and pull-request review of requests Bruno Bruno describes itself as always local and Git-native, with collections stored as plain text in an open format.
A choice of storage backend Insomnia Local, Git, and cloud storage are reported as options (see the caveat on sourcing below).

How the comparison was framed

Feature checklists age quickly, so the useful axes are the ones that shape daily work:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Storage and data control: signed-in cloud sync, local files, or a selectable backend.
  • Offline and sign-in requirements: what keeps working without an account, and what you give up.
  • Collaboration and Git: built-in product sharing versus a repository-based workflow of branches, reviews, and merges.
  • Platform breadth: an API client alone, or also docs, monitoring, mocks, and governance.
  • Current plan limits: these change, so confirm them on each vendor’s live pricing page.

A note on evidence: the Postman statements below come from Postman’s own support and pricing pages. The Bruno and Insomnia storage details come largely from Bruno’s competitor-authored comparison page, because Kong’s Insomnia documentation entry point didn’t give enough detail for a neutral three-way feature table. We did not run hands-on tests, so there are no performance or security benchmarks here.

Postman: the hosted platform

Postman’s support documentation (updated April 16, 2026) calls it “a cloud-based platform that syncs your work when you’re signed in.” That is the core trade-off. You get shared workspaces and platform features, and your work lives in an account.

Offline and Git

  • Postman offers a Lightweight API Client for offline work, but says it lacks several collaboration tools.
  • Postman says Native Git is an option for local work, but it requires sign-in. It is not an anonymous, account-free workflow.

Platform breadth and plans

Postman’s pricing page describes automated testing, workspaces, documentation, monitoring, and security options. It also says the Basic and Professional plans are no longer available to new customers. Older comparison-site prices may therefore be wrong, so check the live plan matrix before budgeting.

Best for: teams that want one hosted place for collaboration and API lifecycle features and accept account sign-in as part of that.

Bruno: local files and Git

Bruno’s comparison page describes Bruno as always local and Git-native. Collections are plain-text files in an open format. In practice, this means requests can sit in the same repository as the code. Changes show up in diffs, go through pull requests, and follow your normal branching and merge process.

Two cautions apply. First, this characterization comes from Bruno itself, so treat its superiority claims as the vendor’s position. Second, local storage doesn’t make secrets safe. The sources establish a storage workflow, not secret-handling outcomes. Tokens and passwords committed to a shared repository can still leak, so how you store and share credentials matters in any tool.

Best for: developers and teams who already review everything in Git and want API requests treated like code.

Insomnia: storage flexibility

Kong’s official documentation is the authoritative entry point for Insomnia. Bruno’s comparison page says Insomnia supports local, Git, and cloud storage. It also says Insomnia Git Sync is free for up to three users on Essentials, with wider availability on a Pro plan at $12 per user per month.

These figures are Bruno’s account of a competitor. Confirm them on Insomnia’s own plans page before relying on them. They are exactly the kind of limits that change.

Best for: readers who want to pick between local, Git, and cloud storage per project. It’s a reasonable middle option between Postman’s hosted platform and Bruno’s file-first approach, provided the current terms fit your team size.

Pricing: what can and can’t be compared

Tool What is established Source and caveat
Postman Basic and Professional are closed to new customers; plan-level feature entitlements are listed Postman pricing page; prices not compared here
Insomnia Git Sync free for up to three users on Essentials; Pro $12 per user per month Reported by Bruno; not confirmed by Insomnia
Bruno Not stated Check Bruno’s own pricing page

No reliable, like-for-like three-way price comparison could be established, so treat any single “cheapest” claim with suspicion.

Choosing: a short checklist

  1. Do you need hosted docs, monitoring, or governance? If yes, start with Postman and read its current plan matrix.
  2. Must requests be reviewed in pull requests as plain files? If yes, shortlist Bruno.
  3. Do different projects need different storage models? Look at Insomnia, and confirm Git Sync limits and pricing with Kong.
  4. Must it work without an account? Postman’s offline option is reduced and its Native Git needs sign-in. Check what the others require on their own pages.
  5. Trial before committing. Import one real collection into your shortlisted tool and see whether your team’s review process fits.
