Post-Quantum Cryptography vs. Zero-Knowledge Proofs: What Each Protects Against

Post-quantum cryptography addresses quantum-capable attackers; zero-knowledge proofs address what a verifier learns. They are distinct protections that can be combined.

Post-quantum cryptography and zero-knowledge proofs solve different security problems. Post-quantum cryptography aims to keep cryptographic protections secure against future quantum computers; a zero-knowledge proof lets someone establish that a claim is true without revealing the secret behind it. A system may need both, but neither label guarantees the other’s protection.

What does post-quantum cryptography protect against?

Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) is designed to withstand attacks by conventional computers and by sufficiently capable quantum computers. The concern is that quantum computers could undermine some public-key cryptography used today. PQC relies on mathematical problems believed to remain difficult for both kinds of computers; it is not quantum computing or quantum cryptography, and its standards do not mean a quantum attack is already practical. NIST describes PQC and its purpose.

Different cryptographic tools provide different protections. Key establishment helps two parties create a shared secret key, which can then support confidential communications. Digital signatures help authenticate identity and detect unauthorized changes to data. A key-establishment mechanism is not a digital signature.

NIST’s finalized standards

In August 2024, NIST established three standards: FIPS 203 specifies ML-KEM for establishing shared secret keys; FIPS 204 specifies the ML-DSA digital-signature algorithm; and FIPS 205 specifies the SLH-DSA digital-signature algorithm. NIST says ML-KEM is “believed to be secure, even against adversaries who possess a quantum computer.” “Believed” matters: this is a security assessment, not proof that no future attack is possible.

FIPS 203 lists ML-KEM-512, ML-KEM-768, and ML-KEM-1024 parameter sets, ordered from lower to higher security strength and, correspondingly, higher to lower performance. The appropriate choice depends on a system’s security requirements and performance constraints.

NIST’s transition timeline

NIST’s project page summarizes the transition timeline in NIST IR 8547: quantum-vulnerable algorithms are to be deprecated and ultimately removed from NIST standards by 2035, with high-risk systems moving earlier. This is NIST’s stated standards transition timeline, not a universal deadline for every organization. See NIST’s PQC project page.

What does a zero-knowledge proof hide?

A zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) allows a prover to convince a verifier that a statement is true without disclosing the secret information used to support it. For example, someone could prove they meet an age threshold without revealing their exact birth date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Completeness: An honest prover with a true statement can convince an honest verifier.
  • Soundness: A false statement should not be accepted, except with the proof system’s small error probability.
  • Zero-knowledge: The verifier learns no additional information beyond the statement’s validity.

These properties describe what a proof system is intended to achieve. They do not mean an application hides every input, transaction detail, or piece of surrounding data. Privacy depends on what the application makes public and what the proof actually establishes. Ethereum.org explains zero-knowledge proofs and their properties.

How the protections differ

Question Post-quantum cryptography Zero-knowledge proofs
Main security question Can a quantum-capable attacker defeat this cryptographic protection? Can a prover establish a claim without revealing the secret behind it?
Primary concern Quantum-enabled attacks against vulnerable cryptographic schemes, while also aiming to resist conventional attacks. Unnecessary disclosure to the verifier while proving a claim.
Typical functions Establishing shared secret keys and producing digital signatures. Proving private claims, credentials, computations, or state validity.
Does not automatically provide Privacy from application data exposure or protection from implementation mistakes. Quantum resistance, secrecy for data published outside the proof, or sound application design.
Can it be combined with the other? Yes. A system can use quantum-resistant primitives alongside a suitable ZK proof system. Yes. The proof system’s own cryptographic assumptions still need evaluation.

These are not competing algorithms in one category. PQC describes a security goal and a family of cryptographic schemes; zero knowledge describes a property of proofs and the protocols that provide it. To assess a design, ask what attacker it considers, what security property it needs, what data remains visible, and what assumptions its algorithms and proof system make.

Why a zero-knowledge rollup may not keep transactions private

A validity proof can show that off-chain state updates were computed correctly. That establishes correctness, not necessarily confidentiality. Rollups may publish data needed for independent reconstruction of their state. Ethereum.org puts the distinction plainly: “Publishing this data is what makes permissionless verification possible; it is not a privacy mechanism.” Read Ethereum.org’s explanation of zero-knowledge rollups.

“ZK-rollup” is often used as shorthand for a rollup that uses validity proofs. The name alone does not establish that every transaction or its metadata is private. Check the architecture and identify which data is published before drawing conclusions about privacy.

Can zero-knowledge proofs and post-quantum cryptography be used together?

Yes. An application might use quantum-resistant authentication while allowing a user to prove eligibility without disclosing identity details. Those protections address different risks: the PQC components address an attacker’s computing capability, while the proof addresses what a verifier learns. Whether a system actually provides both depends on its chosen algorithms, proof system, published data, and implementation. The label “zero-knowledge” alone does not establish that a proof system is quantum-resistant.

How to evaluate a system’s security claim

  1. Name the threat. Is the concern a future quantum-capable attacker, disclosure to a verifier, or both?
  2. Identify the required property. For key establishment or signatures, check which cryptographic scheme is used and what role it serves. For a proof, identify the precise claim and what the verifier learns.
  3. Inspect public data. Determine which inputs, outputs, transaction details, and metadata are published outside the proof.
  4. Check assumptions and implementation. A standard or proof-system property does not by itself establish that a particular deployed product is secure.
