To assess it, compare well-defined points in the dataset with independently measured checkpoint coordinates, then report the method, reference basis, units and statistic. A map that looks aligned on screen has not, by that appearance alone, been tested.
What positional accuracy means—and what it does not
Positional accuracy is one dimension of geographic-data quality: it concerns the closeness of represented positions to their corresponding positions on the ground or in a suitable reference dataset. It is not a general score for whether a dataset is good, current, complete or appropriate for every task. ISO 19157-1:2023 frames quality evaluation and reporting around a product specification and user needs; the practical question is whether the measured quality is adequate for the intended use. Visual alignment is not a substitute for measurement. Layers can appear to line up because of display scale, symbol width, image resampling or the way they were transformed. A defensible accuracy claim comes from comparing corresponding locations against a reference whose accuracy is higher than that of the dataset being assessed.
How do I assess positional accuracy?
-
Define the use and required accuracy
State what decision or analysis the data will support and what positional accuracy that use requires. The requirement belongs to the product specification or project decision, not to a universal threshold that applies to every GIS dataset.

- !!! PLEASE NOTE:Please search satellite signals in an open outdoor area before using this device and there is no signal can be found indoors. When the signal value in the upper left corner of the device screen is below 1 m, start measuring to ensure the accuracy of this device
-
Select suitable checkpoints and an independent reference
Choose well-defined, recoverable features that can be identified consistently in both the dataset and the reference. Obtain reference coordinates from an independent source that is more accurate than the data under test. The Federal Geographic Data Committee’s National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy (NSSDA) describes point-based comparison of dataset coordinates with higher-accuracy reference coordinates and applies to point, vector and raster datasets. FGDC NSSDA
-
Make the comparison in a consistent coordinate context
Confirm that the dataset and checkpoints use compatible coordinate reference systems, datums and units, and that each pair represents the same real-world position. A datum or coordinate-system mismatch can create apparent offsets that are not the positional error the assessment is intended to measure.

ZL660 Land Surveying Equipment, Handheld GPS for Surveying- !!!PLEASE NOTE: Please search satellite signals in an uncovered sky before using. When the signal value in the upper left corner of the device screen is below 1 m, start using to ensure the accuracy of the device. This device don't have map and cannot be used for navigation
- TIPS: The device needed to be held horizontal for taking measurements. Recommend to measure Area above 0.04 acres and distance above 328ft. The larger the measurement range, the smaller the error. The altitude data displayed on the device is GPS altitude, which fluctuates with changes in the satellite signals received. This is normal
- High Precision Measuring: Supports 6 satellite systems for fast, reliable signal, area measurement error in 0.002 acres, distance error in 5 ft,it cannot search satellite signals indoor
- 7 Measurement Modes: Measure area, distance, height and slope; save coordinates (save only, no edit). Two area measurement methods for gardens, parking lots, ranches and flat lands; two distance modes for paths, boundaries and irregular routes to measure straight and curved distances
- Sunlight-Readable 3.2" Color Screen: 240×320 high-resolution large display. Measurement results show directly on screen for easy viewing, clearly visible even under direct bright sunlight

Calculate and report the result with its test basis
Name the statistic, units, tested component (horizontal, vertical or 3D where applicable), reference source, checkpoint context and applicable standard and edition. Identify limitations that affect interpretation. A number without its reference basis and method does not tell readers what was measured.

Judge the result against the intended use
Interpret the statistic in light of the project requirement. It is evidence about the tested data and method; it does not, by itself, establish fitness for every application. ISO 19157-1:2023 provides the broader quality-evaluation and reporting framework. ISO 19157-1:2023

Which standard or statistic should a report name?
The appropriate standard depends on the work and the specification. For point-based testing across point, vector and raster data, FGDC’s NSSDA describes comparison with higher-accuracy reference coordinates. For digital geospatial products, the current ASPRS listing identifies Positional Accuracy Standards for Digital Geospatial Data, Edition 2, Version 2 (2024). It emphasizes RMSE-based reporting, introduces 3D positional accuracy and includes practice addenda for lidar, photogrammetry, unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and oblique imagery. ASPRS current standards listing
ASPRS adopted the 2024 edition on June 24, 2024. Its published summary describes changes including removal of references to the 95% confidence level as an accuracy measure, relaxed control and checkpoint accuracy requirements, accounting for survey checkpoint accuracy when computing final product accuracy, and removal of the lidar vegetated vertical accuracy pass/fail requirement. - Explore confidently with the reliable handheld GPS
- 2.2” sunlight-readable color display with 240 x 320 display pixels for improved readability
- Preloaded with Topo Active maps with routable roads and trails for cycling and hiking
- Support for GPS and GLONASS satellite systems allows for tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone
- 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a micro SD card slot
The updated standard raised the minimum checkpoint count for product accuracy assessment from 20 to 30 and specifies a maximum of 120 for large projects. These are requirements described for that ASPRS standard, not universal sample-size rules for every GIS study. Check the standard’s exact clauses when writing a project specification. How to compare two positional-accuracy claims
Two reported values are meaningfully comparable only when their measurement bases and purposes are sufficiently alike. Check each of these before deciding that one dataset is more accurate:
- Accuracy component: Is the value horizontal, vertical or 3D?
- Statistic and units: Are the same statistic and measurement units being used?
- Reference source: Was the reference independent, and is its accuracy stated and suitable?
- Checkpoints: Were points selected in a comparable way, and how many were used?
- Coordinate context: Do the coordinate reference system and datum match or have compatible treatment?
- Test basis: Were the same standard, edition and relevant methods applied?
- Intended application: Do both claims address a use with comparable requirements?
If these differ, the values may describe different tests rather than a reliable ranking of the datasets. State the differences instead of treating the smaller number as automatically better. The reporting and evaluation frameworks in FGDC NSSDA, ISO 19157-1:2023 and the current ASPRS standard listing support keeping those test conditions visible.
What a positional-accuracy figure can—and cannot—tell you
A reported statistic summarizes the tested positions under the stated method. It does not establish other aspects of data quality, prove that untested locations have the same error, or determine whether the dataset meets an unstated project need. Readers should look for the checkpoint and reference context alongside the number, then assess the result against the use the data is meant to support.
