Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose Dockge if your work is mainly Docker Compose and you want stack files to remain ordinary files that you can also manage with the Docker Compose CLI. Choose Portainer if you need a broader container-platform interface, multiple environment types, or business-oriented team controls. Neither is the universal winner: the decision is about workflow and administration scope.
The short answer
Dockge is a Compose-first manager. Its central idea is that a stack is a normal file-based project: you edit the Compose definition, deploy it from the web interface, and retain the ability to work with the same files through the Docker Compose command-line tool. That makes it a natural fit for a homelab, a small server, or an operator who treats Compose files as the source of truth.

Portainer is a wider management platform. Portainer Community Edition (CE) documents support for Docker, Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, and Azure ACI. Business Edition (BE) adds Podman to that listed environment coverage and documents role-based access control, registry management, and dedicated support. Those capabilities matter when several people administer infrastructure or when Docker is only one part of the estate.
The practical rule is simple: start with Dockge when Compose files and a file-oriented workflow are the requirement; start with Portainer when the requirement is platform breadth, centralized administration, or business access controls.

What each product is designed to manage
Dockge: a focused Compose stack interface
Dockge is built around Docker Compose stacks rather than trying to be a universal control plane. The project guide describes managed stacks as files on disk that can also be used with the Docker Compose CLI. In practical terms, your familiar YAML-based workflow remains visible and portable: the graphical interface becomes a convenient way to inspect, start, stop, and edit stacks without replacing the underlying files.
This focus reduces the number of concepts you need to learn if every service you operate is expressed as a Compose project. It also suits people who keep Compose files in a directory, back them up as files, or move between a web interface and a terminal. Dockge’s documented multi-agent support means it is not limited to a single Docker host, but you should still examine how its agent model fits your network, authentication, and operational boundaries.

Portainer presents a broader scope than a Compose-only dashboard. Its official documentation lists Docker, Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, and Azure ACI for CE; BE lists Docker, Swarm, Kubernetes, Podman, and Azure ACI. That makes Portainer relevant when one UI needs to cover more than standalone Docker hosts and Compose projects.
Portainer also supports several stack deployment paths, including Git-backed deployments. Therefore, it is inaccurate to treat every Portainer stack definition as being locked in an internal database. The important distinction is that Portainer can accommodate different operational models, while Dockge makes the on-disk Compose-file model its defining workflow.
| Decision axis | Dockge | Portainer |
|---|---|---|
| Primary workflow | Compose stack management with files kept on disk and usable through the Docker Compose CLI. | Broader container management with several stack deployment workflows, including Git-backed deployments. |
| Environment scope | Compose-focused manager with documented multi-agent support. | CE: Docker, Swarm, Kubernetes, Azure ACI. BE: Docker, Swarm, Kubernetes, Podman, Azure ACI. |
| Team administration | The project guide describes fewer user-management and RBAC features. | BE documents RBAC, registry management, and dedicated support; check the exact edition feature list. |
| Licensing | MIT-licensed open-source project. | CE is open source; BE is a licensed commercial edition. |
| Comparative resource use | No repeatable head-to-head CPU or memory result has been established. | No repeatable head-to-head CPU or memory result has been established. |
Feature descriptions and supported environments are documented in the Portainer documentation and the Dockge project guide. The comparison guide at Dockge.org’s Portainer comparison is useful for understanding the workflow distinction, but edition limits and release details should be checked in the live documentation.
Why the stack-file workflow matters
Dockge keeps the file visible
With Dockge, the Compose definition is an ordinary file on disk. You can open that file in an editor, review it in a code repository, copy it to another host, or run it with the Docker Compose CLI. The UI does not force you to abandon those practices. This is especially useful when your operating habit is “edit YAML, review the diff, then deploy.”

File-oriented management also clarifies backup decisions. A backup of the Compose files preserves the declarative definition of the stack; it does not automatically constitute a backup of application data stored in named volumes or bind-mounted directories. Treat those data locations separately in your backup plan.

Portainer offers more than one deployment path
Portainer can manage stacks through multiple workflows, including deployments sourced from Git. That flexibility is valuable if different teams or environments use different release processes. A Git-backed stack can fit a review-and-deploy pipeline, while another environment may be administered directly through Portainer.
The trade-off is choice. Before standardizing, decide where the authoritative definition lives for each stack: a local Compose file, a Git repository, or another documented deployment path. Write that decision down so operators do not make conflicting edits through different interfaces.
Environment coverage: when Docker is not the whole picture
Choose Dockge for a Compose-centered estate
Dockge is the closer conceptual fit when every target is a Docker Compose stack and your priority is a simple, file-compatible control surface. Its multi-agent support can help you manage more than one host, but it does not change the product’s Compose-centered scope.

Portainer CE’s documented list covers Docker, Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, and Azure ACI. Portainer BE adds Podman to that list. If you already operate more than one of those technologies, a single management product may be more useful than maintaining a separate UI for each environment.
Do not infer that every feature is available in every edition. Confirm the environment type, deployment method, and edition in the current Portainer documentation before committing to a design.
Team controls, registries, and edition boundaries
What Portainer Business Edition adds
Portainer identifies role-based access control, registry management, and dedicated support as Business Edition features. BE requires a license key. These are organization-level capabilities: RBAC lets you define what different users or groups can administer, registry management centralizes access to image sources, and dedicated support provides a commercial escalation path.
Those features are most relevant when more than one person needs access but not everyone should have unrestricted control. They can also matter for an operations team that needs a documented support relationship rather than a community-only workflow.

Dockge’s lighter administration model
Dockge’s project guide notes fewer user-management and RBAC features. That is not a defect for a single operator; it is a boundary to account for when you need fine-grained permissions, centralized registry administration, or formal separation between teams.
For a small private server, a simpler access model may be easier to operate. For a shared platform, list every role you need—administrator, deployer, read-only observer, and so on—and verify that the selected product and edition can represent those roles before migration.
Requirements and first-day setup considerations
Dockge’s documented prerequisites
The Dockge guide lists Docker 20 or newer, or Podman, on supported Linux distributions. It documents port 5001 as the default web port. The port is a connection setting, not a performance figure; if another service already uses it, plan the port mapping before you start.
- Confirm that the host runs a supported Linux distribution and Docker 20 or newer, or a supported Podman installation.
- Read the current installation section of the Dockge project guide rather than copying an old command from an unrelated post. Release and installation instructions are version-sensitive.
- Decide where Compose stack files will live and how those files will be backed up or versioned.
- Reserve or remap the web interface port; the documented default is 5001.
- If you will manage additional hosts, review Dockge’s multi-agent instructions and define which network paths and credentials agents require.
- After installation, deploy a non-critical Compose stack first, then verify both UI operations and the equivalent Docker Compose CLI workflow against the same files.
Portainer deployment planning
Portainer’s supported environment list is broad, so planning starts with the environment rather than a single prerequisite number. Identify whether the target is standalone Docker, Swarm, Kubernetes, Azure ACI, or—on BE—Podman. Then follow the environment-specific instructions in the official documentation.
- Choose CE or BE before configuring users and integrations; edition boundaries affect RBAC, registry management, and support.
- Decide whether each stack will be deployed directly, from a file, or through a Git-backed workflow.
- Map the hosts and environments that each administrator should see.
- Document the location of source Compose files or repositories so a UI change does not silently become the only copy of a deployment definition.
Cost and licensing
Dockge
Dockge is described in its project guide as an MIT-licensed open-source project. Dockge’s project guide does not list a paid Dockge plan or a per-node fee. You still incur the normal costs of running the hosts, storage, backups, and any surrounding infrastructure, but those are not Dockge license charges.
Portainer Community Edition and Business Edition
Portainer CE is open source. BE is a licensed commercial offering and requires a license key. The official pricing page currently labels one annual Starter plan at $1,045 per year for 5, 10, or 15 nodes and one annual Scale plan at $2,095 per year for 5 to 25 nodes. These amounts and plan names were shown on the pricing page in 2026 and are subject to change; verify the live page at Portainer’s official pricing before budgeting or publishing a purchase order.
| Option | License position | Documented price information | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dockge | MIT-licensed open source. | Dockge’s project guide lists no paid plan. | Current release and installation terms. |
| Portainer CE | Open source. | No commercial annual amount needed for CE is stated here. | Current CE capabilities and support model. |
| Portainer BE Starter | Licensed commercial edition; license key required. | $1,045/year for 5, 10, or 15 nodes, as listed on the pricing page in 2026. | Current price, node definition, taxes, and included features. |
| Portainer BE Scale | Licensed commercial edition; license key required. | $2,095/year for 5 to 25 nodes, as listed on the pricing page in 2026. | Current price, node definition, taxes, and included features. |
Performance and resource use: what is not established
No repeatable head-to-head CPU or memory benchmark is documented in either project’s published materials. Resource use changes with the product version, host operating system, number of environments, polling frequency, enabled integrations, and workload. Consequently, neither Dockge nor Portainer can be called the lighter option based on the published information cited above.

If resource consumption is a deciding factor, measure both products on your own hardware. Use the same host class, Docker version, number of managed stacks, monitoring interval, and observation period. Record idle and deployment-time CPU and memory, then repeat after adding the environments and users you actually expect. Treat that as a local capacity test, not a universal product ranking.
Which one fits common scenarios?
Compose-first homelab or single-service operator: Dockge
Dockge is the closer fit when one person runs a handful of Compose projects and wants the files to remain easy to inspect and use from a terminal. The UI adds convenience without changing the basic file-based mental model. Its documented multi-agent support also means you should not dismiss it solely because you have more than one host.
Mixed Docker, Swarm, Kubernetes, or ACI environments: Portainer
Portainer CE’s documented support for Docker, Swarm, Kubernetes, and Azure ACI makes it the more natural candidate when those environments coexist. If Podman is part of the estate, Portainer’s documentation places that support in BE, so include the license cost and edition requirement in the design.
Teams needing delegated administration: Portainer BE
When operators need different permissions, registry administration, and a commercial support channel, evaluate Portainer BE. Confirm the precise feature availability and license terms rather than assuming that a CE deployment includes BE controls.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Several hosts running Compose: compare the agent workflows
Multi-host Compose is not automatically exclusive to Portainer: Dockge documents multi-agent support. Compare how each product connects to agents, how credentials are managed, and whether your team needs the broader environment support or RBAC documented for Portainer.
Very limited hardware: measure instead of guessing
A small server may make overhead important, but published information does not identify a performance winner. Run a controlled local test before choosing on the assumption that Dockge or Portainer will use less CPU or memory.
Interoperability, migration, and operating discipline
Moving toward Dockge
Inventory each stack’s Compose files, environment-variable files, bind mounts, named volumes, networks, and secrets before importing or recreating it. The file may describe how to start a service, but application data and secret material require separate handling. Test one non-critical stack and confirm that the generated containers, mounts, and networks match your expectations.
Best Value
Moving toward Portainer
Decide which deployment path will be authoritative for each stack. If the source is Git, define the repository, branch or revision policy, and who may deploy it. If the source is a local file, preserve that file outside the UI as well. This avoids an operational split in which one person edits a stack in Portainer while another edits a different copy in a repository.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Keeping CLI access available
Dockge’s documented on-disk model makes UI/CLI interoperability explicit. Portainer can also use multiple deployment paths, so document the corresponding source and hand-off process. In either product, keep backups of application data and verify that a restore works; saving a Compose definition alone does not recreate the contents of a database volume.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Confusing a web port with a security boundary
Dockge’s default port 5001 only tells you where its web interface listens by default. It does not replace authentication, network segmentation, TLS termination, firewall rules, or regular updates. Apply the current project’s deployment and security guidance to your exposure model.
Assuming edition features are interchangeable
Portainer’s RBAC, registry management, and dedicated support are identified as BE features. Write down the required capabilities and confirm them against the edition you will actually license. A proof of concept on CE should not be treated as proof that a production team workflow is available without BE.
Treating all “stacks” as the same object
Dockge’s stack is a file-oriented Compose project. Portainer can deploy stacks through more than one path, including Git. Ask where the definition is stored, how changes are reviewed, and how a rollback is performed instead of relying on the shared word “stack.”
Choosing on an unverified performance claim
No supported comparative benchmark establishes a CPU or memory winner. Reject blanket claims that one product is always lighter unless they include the versions, hardware, workload, and repeatable method relevant to your installation.
Copying stale installation instructions
Dockge release and installation details are version-sensitive. Use the live guide at dockge.org when installing or upgrading. For Portainer, use the environment-specific instructions in the official documentation at docs.portainer.io.
A practical selection checklist
Answer these questions before committing:
- Are all target workloads Docker Compose stacks, or must one UI also cover Swarm, Kubernetes, Azure ACI, or Podman?
- Must Compose files remain ordinary files that operators can use directly with the Docker Compose CLI?
- Will stacks be deployed from local files, from Git, or by more than one method?
- How many hosts and agents will be managed, and what network paths are acceptable?
- Do users need role-based permissions, registry management, or dedicated support?
- If those controls are required, is a Portainer BE license and license key approved?
- What is the backup and recovery plan for Compose definitions, secrets, and application data?
- What measurements will determine whether the chosen UI fits the available CPU, memory, and storage?
A “yes” to file-first Compose interoperability and “no” to broader platform or team-control requirements points toward Dockge. A “yes” to mixed environments or formal delegation points toward evaluating Portainer, with CE versus BE decided from the feature and licensing requirements.
Bottom line
Dockge is the better match for a Compose-centered, file-oriented operating style. Portainer is the better match for broader environment coverage and organizations that need documented business controls. Start with the scope of your environments and the source of truth for your stack files; only then compare edition, licensing, multi-host operation, and measured resource use.
