Portable Solar Generator Camping: What One Weekend Really Proved

A three-day camping report shows what one 2,042Wh power station managed—and why its 42% remaining charge should not be treated as a guaranteed weekend runtime.

A 2,042Wh portable power station made a three-day car-camping trip easier, but it did not prove that every camper can go a weekend without recharging. Tom’s Guide author Jeff Parsons reported finishing a sunny 48-hour stretch with 42% charge left after starting full. The result came from relatively light use—not continuous refrigeration—and is best read as one trip report, not a runtime guarantee.

What happened on the camping trip?

Parsons took a Jackery Explorer 2000 on a three-day camping trip during a UK heatwave, with temperatures around 32°C (89.6°F). The station was reported to hold 2,042Wh and weigh 39.5 lb (17.9 kg). He wrote: “I started the weekend with a full charge of 100% and when it was time to pack up and go home, I was down to 42%.” (Tom’s Guide, August 28, 2026)

The kettle was the main power draw, approaching the station’s reported 2,200W output. A refrigerator was not left running continuously. Parsons estimated roughly 15 hours for a 90W portable refrigerator; that is an estimate in the article, not a measured universal runtime. The station made occasional use of electrical appliances convenient, but the trip does not establish how long it would last under a heavier load.

He described a faint whirr audible when standing close to the unit and said it did not disturb sleep. That is a personal observation, not a measured noise level.

How long will a portable power station last while camping?

It depends on the energy each device uses, how often it runs, and how much energy the station can deliver after conversion losses. Capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh); a device’s power draw is measured in watts (W). A 2,042Wh rating is a reservoir figure, not a promise that a 2,042W appliance will run for exactly one hour. In practice, AC devices draw from the battery through an inverter, and real-world usable energy varies.

For a rough planning estimate, divide the station’s usable watt-hours by the average load in watts. A 90W device running continuously would consume 2,160Wh over 24 hours before accounting for conversion losses, so it would exceed a 2,042Wh station’s nominal capacity in a day. Cycling appliances use less than their rated draw over time, while high-power devices such as kettles can consume energy quickly during short bursts.

List the devices you expect to use, their wattage, and hours of use. Add the daily watt-hour estimates, allow a margin for conversion losses and changing conditions, and compare the total with station capacity. For solar recharging, plan around the panel’s actual conditions rather than assuming its rated wattage will be sustained all day.

Can a solar generator recharge during a weekend trip?

Yes, if the panel, sunlight, placement, and available daylight provide enough energy for the station’s input. In this trip report, one 100W panel reportedly delivered its full 100W input during a very sunny weekend. The author’s rough calculation was that filling a 2,042Wh station at 100W would require about 20 hours of panel input—around four days at four to six peak-sun hours per day. That estimate does not account for all conversion losses or changes in weather, shade, and panel angle.

The article says two panels could provide up to 400W of solar input and reports Jackery’s claim of a five-and-a-half-hour full charge at that input. It also reports manufacturer charging figures of about 1.7 hours from a wall outlet, or 1.33 hours using the app’s emergency charge mode. These are reported claims, not timings independently measured during the camping trip.

Parsons suggested considering a 200W panel, although the panel used in his reported trip was 100W. Before choosing a panel, check the exact station’s supported input, voltage, connector, and whether an adapter is required. A panel’s nominal wattage alone does not establish compatibility or the energy it will deliver at a campsite.

What should you compare before choosing a camping power station?

  • Capacity (Wh): Estimate the energy your planned devices will use, rather than choosing by battery size alone.
  • Continuous and surge output (W): Confirm that the unit can run an appliance and handle its startup demand. A kettle near 2,200W needs a station rated for that level of continuous output.
  • Weight and carry design: A 39.5 lb unit may suit car camping, but can be awkward if you must carry it far from the vehicle.
  • Recharge options: Compare solar input limits and realistic sun exposure with wall or car charging options and the time available to recharge.
  • Ports and load behavior: Check which devices need AC versus DC, what must run at the same time, and whether the ports support those loads.
  • Panel compatibility: Verify connector, voltage, input limits, and any required adapter for the exact station model.

Manufacturer specifications can illustrate different capacity classes, but they are not head-to-head performance tests:

Example Published capacity and output Solar details What the comparison shows
Jackery Explorer 2000, as reported by Tom’s Guide 2,042Wh; 39.5 lb (17.9 kg); reported output up to 2,200W Trip report used one 100W panel The unit in the camping account; the reported trip ended at 42% charge.
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2, US product page 1,070Wh; 1,500W rated AC output; 3,000W surge; about 23.8 lb Not stated on the cited specifications page A smaller-capacity model, not the unit used on the trip. (Jackery US specifications)
EcoFlow TRAIL 200 and TRAIL 300 192Wh for TRAIL 200 and 288Wh for TRAIL 300 models; output varies by model Not stated on the cited comparison page Compact, DC-oriented camping options with much lower stated capacity. (EcoFlow product information)
EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro kit, Europe 768Wh station 220W panel; stated parallel solar charging time of 4.5 hours A European kit listing with manufacturer-stated specifications, not an independent test. (EcoFlow Europe listing)

Was it a game changer?

For car camping with intermittent appliance use, the reported station offered a substantial reserve and the convenience of familiar powered devices. The 42% remaining after 48 hours is encouraging for that particular sunny, relatively light-use trip, but it does not establish a typical weekend runtime. If your plans include a continuously running refrigerator, high-wattage cooking, cloudy weather, or a long carry from the car, estimate those needs separately before deciding how much capacity and solar input to bring.
